DIY live steam boiler build - Part 2 of 4 (Steam test)

  • Please note - This video is for educational purposes only and I don't recommend you make one yourself. Although it costs much less than buying a ready made steam boiler, there are quite a few dangers in doing it yourself. The boiler is now finished and working perfectly (personally, I think it's a work of art).
I couldn't find any in-depth videos or tutorials on how to make a boiler, so I had to go by instinct.
I'm only sharing my experiences and learning curve with you all because you wanted it.
Not long after I recorded this video, I discovered MAP gas which is MUCH better than a standard butane torch and it does the job perfectly but please DON'T TRY TO MAKE YOUR OWN unless your name is Tony and you're a complete idiot. I think my e-Bike and scooter are safer than doing this but unfortunately, I'm still in constant pain so I can't ride either of them 😔

You might want to plumb a steam port in to the flue. If you connect it to the steam exhaust of your engine, it will create a strong draft through your flue and pull the flame deeper in to your fire box.

Excellent craftmanship! I'm sure this was a fun and exciting project! Just a few important points if someone were to make something like this:
-As a rule of thumb you should never have an open flame directly over metal inside a boiler (thermal stress and such which can lead to a broken tube or an explosion) in an industry aplication a boilerplate would have been made(I think your design allowed for one) and then the end cap would be placed.
-You can also add an economizer to heat your feed water by placing a coil heat exchanger in your chimney, the closer the feed water temperature is to the smoke temperature the higher the efficiency will be.
-Insulation on the boiler body, chimney, feed water and steam lines is very important as will yield you a very nice (and very cheap in these sizes) efficiency increase, this can be done even after making the boiler and makes it safer to handle.

I’m also an Allen Millyard fan.
Tony this is bloody amazing, I’ve done a bit of silver soldering myself making RC under carriage.
That finished boiler is a credit to you, looks great with the Matt black paint and mahogany trim. Boiler bands would really finish it off.
You’re ready to make your own Rocket

Very nice job!!!! I may get out my tig welded boiler and fire it up. It is snow covered here in Canada so perhaps in spring. Good work sir! I had flame tubes. 2wd 1952EV bike in snow vid today.

Well done Tony lad...lol...So does that little glass water tube see boiler pressure too? I'd be nervous about that...😯😯😯😳🇬🇧

Tony never fear with cutting with a Hacksaw: Look at what Allen Millyard does with a hacksaw, and 1 or 2 of Tracy's Cup Cakes!

I'd like to try a similar boiler but trying to find 3" copper pipe and caps are like looking for gold. I'd also have to invest in a torch hot enough to silver solder. Maybe finding a completed boiler might be cheaper than I thought.

That's what I thought and yes, it probably would have cost the same price in the end but I have the satisfaction of knowing that I built it 😁

Surrounding the job with fire bricks or better still heat insulating bricks makes an enormous difference. That contains a lot of the heat and lets that big heat sink stay hot. You’ll still need a pretty big torch but at least it’ll make these jobs a possibility ✔️
