DIY live steam boiler build - Part 3 of 4 (First test run)

  • Please note - This video is for educational purposes only and I don't recommend you make one yourself. Although it costs much less than buying a ready made steam boiler, there are quite a few dangers in doing it yourself. The boiler is now finished and working perfectly (personally, I think it's a work of art).
    I couldn't find any in-depth videos or tutorials on how to make a boiler, so I had to go by instinct.
    I'm only sharing my experiences and learning curve with you all because you wanted it.
    Not long after I recorded this video, I discovered MAP gas which is MUCH better than a standard butane torch and it does the job perfectly but please DON'T TRY TO MAKE YOUR OWN unless your name is Tony and you're a complete idiot. I think my e-Bike and scooter are safer than doing this but unfortunately, I'm still in constant pain so I can't ride either of them 😔

    Wow it's just fantastic just loving the sound it make when running and slowing down. Just like a steam train brilliant you must be so proud of that engine and it looks great. What a transformation from when you first showed it us it's hard to believe it's the same engine.

      Cheers mate. I'm impressed that I didn't kill myself in the process because there were a few dodgy moments where I knew it'd kill me if it went wrong. It's more of a relief than proudness 😂

    It would be fun to see you use this to power your next bike. It would keep you warm in the winter and you'd be a sight to see on a steam engine motorbike. :D

      If the steam boat does at least 60mph and I could find a place to take it, yeah I'd do it. This weekend is the finale of the steam stuff for the time being, I'm going back to my usual mayhem..... I haven't said any swear words for 2 weeks now, I'm getting withdrawal 😥

    With the engine running light there’s very little load. An engine like that will run on next to nothing , so little pressure that it doesn’t even move the gauge. If you give that engine high pressure on no load, it’ll roar into blur.

    Well done Tony. That's bloody brilliant.
    Do you reckon that pressure gauge might be a bit shite ? Even after you ran it down, it still had a reasonable amount of pressure.

    • @Vortecks
      @Vortecks  3 года назад

      Yes mate, I'm confident that it's accurate. I put my car pump on the throttle output with a Schrader valve and it was reading 2-3psi high. Steam pressure is different to air pressure because, when you let the steam out, the depressurisation causes the water to immediately boil so it does seem like there's a lot of pressure but there isn't really.

  • @emil.honganmaki5461

    he pressure is first raised to the operating pressureT, then the engine valve is opened

  • @beardoe6874
    @beardoe6874 3 года назад +1

    Congratulations on a successful run.
    I think it would have performed pretty differently if you let the steam pressure build to 30, 60 or 100 psi. The steam would be dryer and expand more, using less water to make it run longer.

    • @Vortecks
      @Vortecks  3 года назад

      Yes, it would but there's one slight problem...... I made the boiler. I have zero experience with plumbing, I've only just discovered how to silver solder and I don't know what I'm doing.
      Even I'm not brave enough to push it to 100psi 😂

      @@Vortecks a hydro test isn't too hard to do. When you are building steam, you have heat which can weaken things in ways you won't see in a hydro test but you can de-rate based upon your temperature and construction.
      Then test under steam using some type of blast shield to avoid injury if you get a boiler explosion.
