You know that old saying, "When life gives you two V8 performance cars, do a drag race"? Well that's exactly what happened here. The media test car gods smiled on us and while we had the latest Range Rover Sport SVR on test, a BMW M8 Competition Cabrio arrived at the Cars.co.za office.
And so we thought, well, this could be fun, even if the cars aren't exactly direct rivals. So we rented an airstrip outside Cape Town and set up a quarter mile drag race and a rolling start drag race between these two V8 powerhouses.
I was waiting for the, “so what exactly happened” 😂

@@elhabiriahmed1236 i dont think so, they cars were giving problems....anyway carwow quarter mile times are faster so they are better drivers in a sense of launching cars
In comparison cars.co.za driver got around 12.16 sec on the quarter mile while carwow got 11 seconds flat, a big difference when talking about quarter mile times

@@kuandhanraj6351 automantv tells us why carwow times are faster. Essentially they measure 0-60mph AND a 1ft rollout which considerably makes the cars times faster.
Automantv is much better imo where he tests 0-100kph and no rollout. Much more indicative of real life

I would be happy to own both of them, my favourites. I could only hear the range rovers exhaust note, that's where the proper BMW M cars will disappoint you on the exhaust note BMW should stick with the M50i's exhaust note they sound proper than the proper M division. Am a BMW fanboy but the Range Rover always makes a good statement when it comes to the exhaust sound it is more that pleasing listening to it.

M8! One of my dream cars, but would you pick it over a 911 turbo s. Toughest decision ever.
911 turbo s is 220k while the m8 can be under 180k super spected out. M8 can sit 4 ppl. More luxury etc. Turbo s is faster

Turbo S is quicker, but the M8 looks better and stands out more on the road as it's a fresher design. Both are super car slayers.

X5M vs that Range Rover would of been the test people want to see. The M8 does 60 in 2.5 (fastest time so far) and a 1/4 of 10.7 which is the same 1/4 as a LaFerrari, we all know how that would turn out against an SUV..

Not a fair assessment, the SUV is heavy and has more drag. Pit the BMW M8 against it’s peers like the 911 Turbo S

Actually rolling race is the most realistic one, definitely not a drag race, except both cars to have the same amount of power, both 4wd or both 2wd, similar weight 🤔

the coupe and grand coupe is even faster at 3 seconds, but still i'm surprised the ranger rover did pretty well considering it has less power
M8 actually does a 11.2 on quatermile, but yes this Beemer bit heavier

I know it would be a slaughter when I see the title. You know..... SVR didn't even stand a chance against the best performance SUVs. It's like a 10-car length race to SUVs like X6M, GLE63s, Urus, Cayenne Turbo or even X4M, GLC63s.....
But SVR sounds better than all of them
@Ivan Samuel That's not true. I know you probably assume those are twin turbo cars so they don't sound good. The SVR is slow and outdated. Back in the time when ML63 or GLE63s were using M156 and M157 engine they sound 100 times better than SVR.
Even now GLE63S still has great crackles and the X5/6M with any aftermarket exhaust sounds supergood. S63B44 engine has a very unique sound.
The VW group V8 sounds bad though. And aftermarket solutions also struggle to solve it. It really sucks.
The BMW M division, since X-drive gives Mercedes benz and Audi brain tumors....the launch of that BMW is nothing short of savage‼️ nothing from Range Rover has anything near speed..
Its definitely the torque converter. It'd better in first and last gear with better launch...when it works.

The Range Rover still has 575hp. But the aeros of a fridge. Obviously the M8 is gonna be even faster with over 50hp more

@@kwenaduba9073 highly disagree, 11.1 is what the coupe m8comp can do. This one is 1+ seconds off the pace. Roof down doesn't cause that much aerodynamic disadvantage. You can argue marginal weight differences, but still, A second is eternity on the strip/track.
