What a beautiful man Mr. Lake was. Inside and out. So captivating and intoxicating to watch him do what he loved so much, and did so consistently well. I simply cannot get enough of those smiling eyes behind long brown lashes, that voice that could do justice to any song, and his stellar bass and acoustic guitar playing. I saw Greg Lake do a solo show, back in May 2012, just him by himself, sitting on a stool, picking up various instruments, and talking about various songs/artists that inspired him, then pieces of various works he'd done with Crimson, ELP & solo. Hall was showing his ignorance. He is from a black culture that a lot of them knew nothing about progressive rock. Just watch the black people on you tube who do there reaction to progressive rock. Who say they had never heard of this music. Just about all of them just love it.
I think in Arsenio’s case, his ignorance was bliss for the most part with the exception of Tony Curtis. He just went to Tony’s drug use as crutches instead of using his ignorance as curiosity.

Curtes 347: I agree with you, but this is on a comedy worker's television talk show, he is just shuffling data and paper working at his job, doing just enough research on the various artists to get by. Arsenio Hall had no clue as to what the Isle of Wight festival was?? The looks on the faces of ELP when he asked the utterly stupid question of "What other bands were there?" They were like, REALLY??
That was a less than stellar performance..Although ELP remains one of the best prog rock acts in rock history..Having them on Arsenio was like having Mozart on the X Factor..
There seem to be quite a few negative comments regarding ELP, which I would imagine are from the less culturally developed members of a still developing nation. This was of course an original solo hit for Greg, and would suppose that it was chosen as to be suitable for a mediocre show. It does show how Greg has lost some of the range in his voice over the years, and it would have been better to perform a typical ELP piece, but that probably would have been a bit too much for the kind of audience who would watch this show live. Music aside, they were a decent bunch of blokes. Bearing in mind when they formed, they were already established individually as top class musicians, they were still willing to sit in the back of a van after a gig eating fish and chips out of paper with their fans.
As far as Greg Lake's voice is concerned, he was a heavy smoker which I did not know, and the possibility of early stages of cancer that he unfortunately passed away from cancer at the age of 69 in December 7, 2016.
To Trog Wallaby: I understand your premise, but they didn't want to overwhelm the unsuspected audience with too much over-the-top shock rock, and sophisticated stuff. He and his *community of ilk* are not expected to extol the excellence of ELP as we would expect.
@@undergroundwarrior70 But Greg did not die of throat cancer. He just needed to get of the cigs. He went on to perform in his usual style years from that showing.....even doing a Moody Blues Cruise in 2012. He sounded just fine.
@RTHA300: ELP was a fantastic band. They were a super group. You may not like them, fine. But to state that Emerson "just played a bunch of notes ..." sounds like the Emperor Joseph II (the Holy Roman Emperor) telling Mozart that "The Abduction from the Seraglio" had too many notes.
Lake's voice is raspy. Just not what it was back in the 70s. Yeah I agree with mallardTDake. Not only did Arsenio not have a clue but he clearly wasn't even interested in knowing about them. I also think Emerson was lying when he said that he listened to rap. Those guys are so above commercial music.
I've seen other interviews from this timeframe. At that time they were talking about their childrens interest and yes, they were listening to Rap, Madonna, etc... because that is what their children were listening to. So, sure they, as pros have what is called "big ears" and they keep them open. Jaco talked about that too back when he was interviewing. Ellington talked about how he viewed jazz as an artform and how swing was business. Big ears and staying viable. Truth
....good music has left us for the most part ......still a little mayo left in the jar .....but u gotta scrape .........btw ....give AH a little credit for at least having them on .....eventho the questions we're lackluster....
What a great band; I miss Keith and Greg a lot. I mean their presence, because they will always live in their music. By the 90s they were great in all aspects: the music (adapted to those years but the essence remained), their looks, so stylish and classy.... With regards to the matter, I don't recognise Carl Palmer today. He has aged very badly, he is always very scruffy, considering he is a guy who always led a healthy lifeaty ans took great care of himself. I met Mike Rutherford last year, he is Carl's same age and he looks splendid! Same Steve Hackett... Well, an opinion. I've always thought that such artists should take care of their looks as s much as their music for respect to the people.
+Mike West Funny thing it's from a studio recording as well. One of three versions (the latest) that I own . Notice the female backing vocal's at song's end. ELP has stood the test of time. How about Arsenio? No, huh.
It's funny how Carl Palmer said "it would nice to see that happen in the coming summer" because that's when Woodstock 94 happened. So with that in mind maybe Carl was clairvoyant.
Is this some sort of Lets Slag off ELP on RUclips video - They created real music and believed in it and it will be around when you, me and them are dead and buried unlike rap which isn't music.
it seems that Emerson was being politically correct, speaking positively about rap, because the host is black as is much of the audience. He probably thinks its rubbish
***** That's absurd. What do you base that on?? I know Keith, and actually if you study history - he came up playing and loving jazz, soul and blues within his various musics. So black music forms are near and dear to him. Go look up PP Arnold, soul singer he backed in the late 60s.Like he said "It's got some ways to go"...so it's not like he raved about rap. He had the respect to indicate it's a type of folk music, which it is.
+Andre' Cholmondeley You know him that well, eh? I find it hard to believe that someone as talented as Keith Emerson would actually value the crap known as 'rap'.
I totally agree, but that shows you how much class they display by attending Arsinios show....I thought they also held back by not expressing their real opinion on the music of the nineties....even thou I can still enjoy most of the nineties. However the SHIT they play today is as Greg hit it right on target,is market oriented. Anyway thats my two cents worth.....Appreciate your comment !!!
Arsenio to ELP: "...who was at Isle Of Wight?" Greg: "everybody!" Arsenic is Clueless obviously. When asked why Zappa hosted his show once, Arsenio said he couldn't do it that night so "they called 1-800-Caucasian". There were a couple of good acts on his show, Wynton Marsalis and Chick Corea were memorable. Loved ELP, saw them in 77, 78 and 93.
Shame about Lakes voice, once upon a time one of the best. They were massive and so well respected in the 70’s, second only to Zeppelin by the mid 70’s.
I absolutely love the sound of ELP, but I also like good rap. Do you think that's incompatible? I believe there's good music in every musical genre, in rap as well of course. And any serious musician will respect good music of any genre, even if he doesn't personally like it.
Right, Arsenio, I know what you mean about the sound of odd words and what they can bring to mind, ie: "I just had the best bowel movement, and it took 5 wipes to clean off all that arsenio."
I agree that Arsenio could have asked more and better, but on the other hand, his viewers at least heard this cosmic music, and perhaps some of them even thought about renouncing rap...
Close but correct in the ways that matter. The B-3 in this video is almost certainly a rental and would be much more common than the C-3, which was Emerson's usual axe. The only difference is in the style of cabinet; the C-3's cabinet's sides go all the way to the floor and the tops slope down whereas the B-3's sides stop at the bottom of the console and the tops come straight forward and then have an abrupt "scoop." Personally I prefer the look of the C.
Functionally it's identical to the C-3 that Emerson usually played. The B-3 you see there is almost certainly a rental that was trucked to the studio that day.

So, sure they, as pros have what is called "big ears" and they keep them open. Jaco talked about that too back when he was interviewing. Ellington talked about how he viewed jazz as an artform and how swing was business. Big ears and staying viable. Truth
....good music has left us for the most part ......still a
little mayo left in the jar .....but u gotta scrape .........btw ....give AH a little credit for at least having them on .....eventho the questions we're lackluster....
Gregs voice is shot here!
+Mike West Funny thing it's from a studio recording as well. One of three versions (the latest) that I own . Notice the female backing vocal's at song's end. ELP has stood the test of time. How about Arsenio? No, huh.
Bullshit it was perfect for his age
He didn't sound perfect, but perhaps he was ill? A cold or flu? He still sounds better than most anything today.
+ticktack1
Well said!
+Shirley Pena RIP Keith - my friend.
Perfectly right
Totally agree sounds like a heated arguement in a bar to me
ELP teaching our cousins to speak English properly, instead of buzz phrases kinda sorta etc. 😉
Best wishes

Arse Hall...say no more
all these years later, their reticence at saying anything good about the direction popular music was heading is validated
Keith likes Pearl Jam,wow.Carl Palmer tastes are even more interesting.
it seems that Emerson was being politically correct, speaking positively about rap, because the host is black as is much of the audience.
+J Blair You are a cliche and a tired one at that.
matt helm And you're an idiot, and big one at that.
Woozler554 I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I?! Twelve year olds could come up with something better.
Arsenio was a terrible and rude interviewer. ELP should have avoided his lame ass show. They were light years out of his league.
How did these brilliant artists wind up on this pathetic "show".
Keith and Carl reduced to very minimal here compared to what they're capable of.
Arsenio to ELP: "...who was at Isle Of Wight?" Greg: "everybody!" Arsenic is
Clueless obviously.
This was a bizarre episode
So what’s arsenio doing these days?
ELP classic and timeless. Arsenio who?
Shame about Lakes voice, once upon a time one of the best. They were massive and so well respected in the 70’s, second only to Zeppelin by the mid 70’s.
I absolutely love the sound of ELP, but I also like good rap. Do you think that's incompatible? I believe there's good music in every musical genre, in rap as well of course. And any serious musician will respect good music of any genre, even if he doesn't personally like it.
Rap isn't music.
I remember thinking that arsenio had no idea who this band was
Right, Arsenio, I know what you mean about the sound of odd words and what they can bring to mind, ie: "I just had the best bowel movement, and it took 5 wipes to clean off all that arsenio."
3:36.
I agree that Arsenio could have asked more and better, but on the other hand, his viewers at least heard this cosmic music, and perhaps some of them even thought about renouncing rap...
Ouch. Making Keith Emerson play on that organ is kind of like making Mario Andretti do the Indy 500 in a Pinto.
It's a Hammond B3. Not sure why you think that's inadequate...
+merloon
Keith could make noises from a kids toy piano ... he is that good.
+merloon Huh? It was the same type of Hammond he played throughout ELP.
You could tell lame Arsenio didn't care for the answer about rap. I agree with them.
