I’m working on a forensic psych ward. Nothing can shock me anymore and there’s no insult I haven’t heard yet. And i wouldn’t want to work anywhere else
By nature I'm an introvert, perfectionist, but I have learned to rock it in terms of banter with patients and coworkers and all the while have learned to let things go as there is just one of me. I am constantly working on a triage mentality and prioritization is key. I have done med surg, I am currently working a step-down unit and if you don't let stuff go and keep moving you will die on shift in terms of drowning in your assignment. Is it crazy? Yep. Is it stressful? Yep. Meanwhile, I don't mind the busy. Im currently looking at going to cardiac ICU as I find open hearts intriguing plus I want to up the anty on my skill set as I want to keep learning. I have found for me being an introvert doing what I do that downtime after shift is important as I have to recharge my batteries a bit. I don't typically get drained if I get my downtime regularly. I also try and take a vacation every 6 months which typically consists of us going somewhere for one and it being a staycation for the second. I have found this helps me stave off caretaker burnout
At the beginning of nursing school I made a list of specialities I thought I would like and crossed off the ones I lost interest in. Watching this, I was like wow yes I am definitely an introverted nurturer so I prefer NICU, L &D, PICU, pedes, geriatrics. These are the only ones left on my wall! Thank you sir for making me self reflect
I graduate in May and just accepted my first job in Labor and Delivery! I’m so excited and can’t wait to start. I have definitely thought about travel nursing as well! Thanks for your video!
I'm a moderate introvert who is highly organized. I did medsurge at an LTACH for a couple of years and absolutely hated it. I then did outpatient psych and loved it, however felt that there was no where for me to grow in that field. I've been a stay at home mom for a little over a year as my husband is an extremely disorganized extroverted orthopaedic surgery resident. I graduate with my MSN in administration in 2 weeks and looking to head back to work. I actually want to go into the ICU with future goals of CRNA school. I like the idea of high acuity and lower patient load (high patient load in medsurge drove me nuts).
Psych NP is one of the fastest and high paying NP specialties. I start my program next year. He never mentioned psych nursing because he probably doesn't think it is "real" nursing. Not too bright.
Also for ICU- I didn’t realize how much the big personalities thing is there. Letting things roll off you is huge in any specialty! For my experience in ICU, family is a huge part of their care and attending to family’s needs as well which was different than my ER experience! Big adjustment haha
Lol. I’m remembering all the times our nurses were cussed out by patients. I was a dialysis tech. I’m in my senior semester of nursing school, so loved this video!
ER first for the experiences, (unorganized & nurturing extrovert, ADD who always strives to be more organized and nursing school demands it) then later in life, a specialty more nurturing, but highly doubt it will be L&D. I love taking care of older adult/senior patients.❤
There are some people who end up in dialysis and it's out of their control. My dad got lupus and that attacked his kidney. He hated that his health was so poor and he had taken such good care of his body during his life.
ive always wanted to be scrub nurse and been working as icu nurse since last 6 months immediately after being graduated. dont know what im doing in my life.
Youngest granddaughter is halfway through a 12 month ABSN. Due to COVID her clinicals were pushed back until her last term 15 Aug - Thanksgiving. Then they study for NCLEX and apply for residency. I am forwarding this video to her. She is polite, but also played divison one soccer. She’s tough!
With such a variety of choices and with each day bringing completely new patients with individual situations, why WOULDN’T you choose nursing? You can be in case management, in home, in office, in clinic, in education, in cardiac, pediatrics, ER, ICU, Med Surg, OB/GYN, L&D, on and on.
I’m a outgoing introverted nurturing type nursing student but I cannot stand Peds or L/D. I’m planning on going into long term care or hospice. Now it’s sounding like maybe I should re-think my decision. 😄😳 Awesome video!
I'm an extrovert, work in a 1 on 1 healthcare practice doing secondary assessment. I love to talk and interact, but also love high pace work and nothing like open wounds bothers me. I also work on an ambulance w/ rapid response and patients who need non rapid transport. So, trying to see what I want to do is pretty tough lol Mostly looking into ICU, ER, or OR.
I’ve been binge watching your videos! I start nursing school in the spring and your videos have been helping a lot. Question for anyone reading this, is it necessary to go into nursing school knowing what specialty you want? Like if you go into it unsure is that bad? Thanks! :)
I️ have a nurturing personality but I️ am extremely organized and enjoy being under pressure/stressed for some weird reason. Graduating in May and I️ may stay in the OR. I️ have been working as a cna during nursing school in med-surg, PACU, and now at the OR. How is the market for OR travel nurses? I️ really want to do travel nursing one day. Trying to decide between an adult or pediatric OR. Thanks for all your videos.
Hi! Came across your YT page and was super excited because I would love to be an RN in the ER (graduate in a couple weeks!) I was trying to follow your IG and FB pages and they don't seem to be utilized by you...? Is that information still current or do you typically just use YT?
I'm an introvert but also a bit of a hard ass. I've been interested in OR because I can deal with type A personalities pretty easily (married to one) and I've got some grit. But I have to wonder if ICU or Psych wouldn't be better..
Baby nursing student here. What would you recommend for someone who is calm, likes adrenaline rushes and is organized? I'm interested in L&D but I'm not sure if I'm enough of a nurturer.
What about nursing for city jails or prisons? Thoughts? Almost all don't think about nursing in those areas. I think a cross between a person's personality with NICU and Psych would be best for that type of environment......maybe a little bit of ER personality thrown in as well.
Look into community health nursing! Working at a school, amusement park, health Dept, wellness clinic, etc. I work at a university and I love it! Lots of patient education and understanding the needs of the specific population
Thanks for your videos Crosby! I just graduated from a nursing program in Oregon and just landed in Atlanta (wife is going to Emory). I would love to start in the ED, but damn, seems impossible to get hired right into the specialty. Any tips? Thank you! Ryan
What's up Ryan? So yeah getting into the specialty is sort of tricky when you're a new grad and no connections to the area. I wouldn't give up though, because it is very possible. I know Piedmont in Atlanta has good Transitioning programs for new grads , I think its a 3 -6 month program like, but you'll get ED and great training
Great video very helpful. Also do you have any trouble finding travel nurse jobs with your masters? I heard that it's harder because you have too much education for the job required.
That's a good question 1. No I didn't, but I have heard the same thing. 2. I believe the problem for most nurses with a Masters is that they get out of their patient care specialty and go into either FNP, Teaching, and Admin. When you travel nurse you need to be ready to go and have all your certifications up to date, and you need to be treating patients so you don't lose your skills.
Oh I got you. The cool thing about it is each specialty has certain types of personalities. Like ER would def be ADHD type personality. But if you're more OCD go for the ICU.
I did not see that coming regarding dialysis. I’ve been a dialysis tech for 14 years and I’m about to start nursing school. I think it depends a lot on the demographics of your patient population. I’ve had good experiences with suburb or rural clinics. Inner city clinics are rough and you do get treated like garbage. I like that it’s a routine and you take care of the same patients all the time, but there’s a decent amount of turnover through transplant, death, and patients transferring to other clinics.
You've found a difference in the demographics?? I just started as a new grad nurse in dialysis and am working in an inner city clinic. I'm super introverted and spend zero time in the city so this population is pretty brutal and exhausting in my opinion. I'd love to transfer to a more rural clinic and keep gaining experience but worried that this won't help my situation haha.
I have 2 interests on the table right now but am totally stuck. I am a new grad looking to start my first job. Should I go into L&D which i tried for a semester and I enjoyed a lot? Or should I go into ICU for a couple of years and use it as a great learning experience so I'm not boxing myself into such a niche setting? PLEASE HELP!!!!
Hmmmmm So you're trying to decide between L&D and ICU? That's tough because both are very good specialties. I know that Traveling L&D specialties make awesome money, like 2200 a week take home, vs ICU or ER when we take home around 1500 a week. So if you wanna travel there is a good reason to do L&D. With ICU you have to opportunity to go deeper into disease processes , working with more complex equipment ventilators, balloon pumps, etc. So yeah i mean it's kind of tough but you really can't go wrong with either.
@@CrosbyTheNomadNurse Thanks for responding! It's such a tough choice because they're both great!!! Which would you say is better to go into FIRST though as a new nurse? Something I know I enjoy or something that I would learn a ton from? (Money is not something I think about because I'm in Canada and wages are standardised for nurses) Thanks again!!!
In that case, I would probably go towards ICU because of the overall experience you would get and you would learn so much in ICU, even though L&D is good it's just limited to the overall experience you get exposed to.
