- Dan Patrick reacts to the news that the Washington Commanders are hiring Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator and former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn as its next head coach
The irony is Quinn could end up being the best Head Coaching hire after next season. Fans may not like it now, but they’ll love him when he has Washington playing in meaningful games come December and January
Agreed.
Washington could hire my dog to coach them and get more wins than they got this year.
@@rbu2136 That was bad coaching this past season, and EB trying to turn Howell into Mahomes and making him drop back and pass 40-50 times a game. If they would’ve let Sam be more of a game manager this year and let him develop slowly and hand the ball off more than he passed, Washington would’ve won a lot more games. Don’t get me wrong, Sam did keep us in games this year, but there’s a time when, if you’re a coach, it’s okay to let your young, first year QB hand the ball off 60 percent of the game. If EB would’ve ran Washington’s offense with Sam at QB anything like SF’s offense with Brock Purdy, Washington would’ve had 9-10 wins this year, and could’ve been in talks to make the playoffs. They knew the o-line was bad, so what do they do? Make Sam throw the ball 40-50 times a game and have him get sacked 5-9 times a game… Also, did your dog get an interview?
Exactly. I think the expectation is to be at least a .500 team and stabalize.
@@JoseFuentes-fn3dl DQ even said in the press conference yesterday that he doesn’t see Washington as a team in a rebuild mode, but a team that needs recalibrated. So that proves he thinks the team is capable of being a good, playoff caliber team
The Bills hired Sean McDermott, a defensive coordinator and then drafted Josh Allen and hired an amazing offensive coordinator that developed him pretty well. Now they haven't gotten to the Superbowl yet but I don't think you NEED an offensive head coach to properly develop a QB if you have the right staff. Demeco Ryan has not hampered CJ Stroud to this point. And if the guy really is the guy he will be fine
The people who nit pick this hire always seem to only report on the negatives
stop using actual examples to make sense lol people only want to bring up things that fit their narrative..i love the fact that everyone hates this pick for us..good quinn gonna have these guys in the playoffs in 3 years..the key will be how consistently we get there
Who's the Commanders' QB again? 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, that's great, Renee. But what happens when your OC does a great job then suddenly gets poached by another team to be their HC, like what happened with Brian Daboll and what will eventually happen with Bobby Slowik?? Then you're back to square one. That's why hiring an offensive guy as your head coach is by far the safer and smarter thing to do, since having a stable and elite offense/QB play is the most important thing
@@TNT_12 bills made the playoffs after daboll left
People are always following trends. “We need a young coach, the next young phenom”. That’s not how it works.
Washington did their homework and trusted their process.
I say bravo, great hire, do the work and everyone will act like they never doubted you.
So much hate for a man who’s in his early 50’s, ACTUAL football players vouch for, and has always coached players up extremely well. It’s nonsense.
Have several seats…
Couldnt have said it better!
Preach brother all I hear on here is b*******
Coaches doesn't matter. only good players .
He needs a strong OC and he should be fine.
I did a mini investigation ... and found that the Commanders have not had a head coach leave with a winning record since ... 1992-the first time Joe Gibbs left. I believe that's that the longest active streak in the NFL by a *good* bit.
Stat of the day, stat of the day…. 😂
Why don’t you go do that for EVERY team then get back to me
Check out how many starting QBs Washington has had in last 30 years? Haha. What’s your guess? More than 30 or less? Like 36.
My favorite is Snyder hired multiple coaches who won multiple SBs and did not make an NFCCG with either of them, Gibbs and Shanahan.
@@genius179It's also darkly ironic that basically every young superstar head coach you can name today ... was working for Washington between 2011 and 2013. Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Matt LaFleur, and Mike McDaniels. wtf.
If everyone is chasing a trend then your best option, statistically speaking, is to draw from a poll overlooked by everyone else. The guy is only 53. He’s proven that he’s been able to get more from cheaper players on D which could give more resources for cap space use on the O Line. I like it as a fan.
After Ben Johnson, the pickings for an offensive minded head coach were pretty slim in this cycle.
Dan Quinn was hired based on his floor, not his ceiling. After almost 3 decades of suffering fans, You would Love to hit a homerun with the coach but you CAN'T miss. The QB and OC and GM are all more important than the HC for Washington right now anyway. Besides, payers seem to love Quinn, so he's a good choice to launch "a new franchise". Keeping the players motivated and together matters. A lot.
Who would have thought the reason Bill wont get the wins is record bc he couldnt keep and find a job. Pete Carrol should go to UCLA when Chip leaves
Pete Carroll left USC with NCAA legal issues.
Dans old ass saying Bellicheck is too old 😂😂😂😂
Wasn’t Belichek a defense coach? All this griping about defense coaches.
He was a linebacker at Salisbury Steak.
Why would new ownership hire inside the Division( Division Rival) for Head Coach???
To get info on the rival ?
If the top young offensive Minds in football don't want to go to Washington what are they supposed to do??? They tried to get multiple young coaches. What am I missing?
Apparently you don’t understand Ben Johnson decided he didn’t want to be a head coach.
Quinn helps "get Cowboy's Secrets" ... ha
Am I the only one who finds it delicious that Belichik came this close to that win record but likely won't get it? AND, he gets to live out his days with everybody now assuming it was Brady and not him? LMAO! I love it. As for Quinn....yawn.
Yes, you are.
And why are you already automatically assuming he isn't getting the record, HMMMM??
The coaching piece at the end: Respect is earned not given. There is a foundation of respect if a coach played at the professional level. But respect is truly earned if you can win. Case in point: Erik Spoelstra
Preach Dan
Peace and Love! When in Sports did You hire the Division Enemy Coach as Head Coach???
Vrabel could have been an organization's coach for the next twenty years & I wouldn't give Bellichick full control/front office responsibility. But as a Cowboy fan I'd give Bill control of the defensive personnel or let him select during the back half of the draft maybe round four on. History tells us that maybe two of these new coaches will work long term. Teams are gonna beg Caroll, Bellichick & Vrabel to be their coach next season
Investigation? You mean a 5 minute Google search lol
It matters more in Baseball than any of the other 3 major sports. At least, that's the perception. With Basketball Football & Hockey a head coach, to some degree, can camouflage his inexperience with great assistant coaches. In baseball, a manager can and will be exposed almost immediately if he doesn't have innate game like instincts...that's usually only earned/learned thru playing on the field at the major or triple A level
A baseball mgr in mlb may, may win your club a handful of games with in-game decision making over 162.
Coaching in football is the most important of the Big Four team sports in this country, imo.
With so many units to a roster the hc must know how to hire and then delegate authority to his staff.
NBA the least affected by coaching, imo (roster size).
A couple of above average players surrounded by a solid threesome and productive bench.
All that said, in no way am I dismissing coaching in sports (coached baseball for three decades).
It’s important to have a competent leader that provides direction and teaching.
But ultimately, the talent on rosters decides games.
I think I agree with you.
Washington knows Quarterbacks! We have had 37 starting QBs in the last 31 years. We are going to shock the NFL by not having any offensive coaches this coming year and just have the new 3 QBs just wing it. And get more wins!
Dan Quinn played college ball buddy
Quinn wears his ballcap backwards. Kids do that.
And Tom Brady
What's that have to do with anything.
Players relate to that. Get a life!
grown men upset about someone wearing a cap backwards gotta be one of the most idiotic things out there
lol "ballcap" yeah Michael Jordan did that too.
Absolutely, I feel like Skins got the guy before the guy
4 teams are in the division and two--Eagles and Cowboys--will not be displaced by Washington next year. Only the Giants are vulnerable to Washington. So unless they hit n 3 draft picks which is a stretch they will be in trouble next season and are not currently a landing spot for hot free agents.
Dan you are incredibly knowledgeable as a host. But I find it surprising that you would throw Mike Vrabel name out there that you don't know about the clash between him and somebody else in the front office at Tennessee who happens to have a relationship with the GM who was just hired, Adam Peters, by the Washington commanders. The NFL in the end these things tend to be about relationships was never going to get a shot at the head coach position. The only way he could get a chance at this position is it somebody else vouched for him Ibrahim inside the building so that he could then show that he has learned from the mistakes that he made assuming of course they were mistakes
As Broncos fan I wanted him when the team hired Hackett. I think Quinn would had been a good fit in Denver. I think Quinn is a downer this season is how bad the Cowboys looked against the Packers.
Hopefully Quinn can bring, Micah Parsons, to DC.
Here's what I don't get about why people are so upset that a defensive-minded coach was hired: Have they written off their current offensive coordinator, Eric Bienemy? He is still under contract. Why shouldn't the Commanders keep him?
Diss Tony Robbins eh?
So, the Commanders didn't take Belichick who had the #7 Ranked Defense (301.6 yards/game average) in the NFL with a much-worse offense at NE versus Quinn who had the #5 Ranked Defense (299.7 yards/game average) with a much-better offense at Dallas. Obviously Belichick made big draft mistakes at QB (Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe) but now the Commanders have the #2 QB pick. Remember that Belichick for a long time was always drafting at/near the bottom of the NFL. And the Cowboys lucked out on getting Dak Prescott to some extent (drafted by Cowboys in 4th round, 135th overall). So the NFL said that year (including the Cowboys) that Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Paxton Lynch, Christian Hackenberg, Jacoby Brissett, Cody Kessler and Connor Cook had better draft grades than Prescott as they were all drafted ahead of Prescott. Obviously Goff (93.6 career QB rating) and Wentz (89.4 career QB rating) are somewhat comparable to Prescott (99.0 career QB rating) whereas the others haven't really had much success. While Prescott isn't in the Top Ten QBs in my book (Mahomes, Burrow, Rodgers, Jackson, etc. all better) he's still decent and keeps his offense on the field that helps rest the defense plus keeps the other team's offense off the field. So the Commanders got rid of a career .500 HC over 13 seasons (Carolina, Washington) in Ron Rivera for a career .500 HC over 6 seasons (Atlanta) in Quinn. How does this make any sense?? Dan Snyder must still be sneaking into the building and be putting something in the water. The Snyder Curse lives on.
Dan Patrick once again proving how little he really understands sports. Dan Quinn is not the sexy hire but Commanders don’t need sexy we need a leader and surround him with sexy young coordinators then we will see how DQ does.
But Quinn wears his hat backwards thus he's cool.
I think coaches turned it down because EB is staying in the same role possibly as the OC/Assistant Head coach
I'd bet a large amount of money in 3yrs Washington is looking for another coach
Dan, I enjoy your show, but the past couple weeks, you've been covering the same topics as everyone else and endlessly.
Does DP not know that Vrabel is also a defensive coordinator? How would he develop a QB Better than Quinn?
You do have to give Vrabel credit for Tannehill becoming a legit starting QB under his regime when he wasn't his 1st 4yrs in Miami
Quinn has two historic playoff collapses on his resume, one as DC and one as HC.
Bienemy will be the QB guy.
Coach is only good as his players. Vrabel is a good example
Good points by Dan Patrick. He has a bright future in this broadcasting thing.
Everybody keeps telling me how great quinn is, how he's a leader of men. We don't need a leader of men we need a leader of scoring points and winning superbowls. This isn't who can be your best buddy. Hell, I would have taken a nobody outa college over this guy.
Pretty sure he led the league in turnovers so that could be considered a step of the right direction for your points and I also think having a very young QB didn’t really help Washington it last year either
Definitely feels like a retread
We have nothing to lose!!
Didn’t Dan Quinn get the Falcons to a Super Bowl? He also turned a horrible defense into a competitive defense in several locations. And we all know what a circus the Cowboys job is, and he still made them respectable. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk…run… and I’ll bet ya dollars to donuts he beats Dallas at least once next year! ❤
Blew the lead in SB, total collapse in this year’s playoffs. Got the job by default….
Poor choice. Dan Quinn has no credibility because he is an old man who wears his hats backwards 🙄. 😂😂😂😂😂
I thought that’s what the lions coach did?
Talk about a rant that betrays an extremely ignorant spirit with regards to the hiring process and how well respected of a coach DQ is.
The Cowgirls beat up on losing/under .500 teams
What makes vrabel a better hire than Quinn? Quinn got to a SB, what did vrabel do?
Got to SB and blew a 25 point lead with his brilliant defense strategy….His D got blown out in this year’s playoffs….
So did Rivera.....
Bill is done.
Dan Quinn’s prime time events were a SB loss and blow out in play off. Great defensive mind? Right….
He's Ron Rivera 2.0
No way, he's a decade younger and a way better coordinator than Ron was. Quinn is energetic the opposite of woke Rivera
The irony here, Bill Belichek too old to coach. Danny Boy will vote for an 80 year old potato for president for the second time in November.
Belichick is an old school coach that has not evolved with the game. Players today don't respond to command and control methods. He has a mediocre record without Brady as the QB (83 -101 for a winning percentage of 45%, the 2nd lowest of NFL head coaches who have coached at least 180 games). It is fantastical that the sports media keeps referring to Belichick as the GOAT. NOT!
Coaches are frauds
Dan you should retire soon, you have outlasted your talent. 🇺🇸🇮🇱
🚪
Yeah why would you hire a defensive coach with the #2 overall pick. Who would ever do that? Oh wait the Texans did last season and went to the playoffs SMH
There is no such thing as a "defensive" or " offensive" coach. It's what they lucked into at the time.
@@bobbowie9350 that’s your uneducated opinion. But Dan played on defense through college. Then came into coaching as a D line coach and only coached on the offensive side of the ball until he became a head coach
Some decision makers? That’s such a stupid statement. In all things there’s only one decision maker.
A decision maker like, say for example, the Detroit Lions 🦁 head coach 🙄?
Doesn't he have beineme as his oc? Ill give him a shot
Dude was DC of a team that gave up 40+ points in their last game and lost to the youngest team in the league.
This could only happen for a white.
No offense to Dan Quinn, but here again is just one more stupid decision by the Redskins. That's their real name. I refuse to call them Commanders. That's a college or high school name. I doubt this team will ever be anything again, until they change the name back to it's original - Redskins. This new ownership is by default light years better than Dan Snyder, but making this kind of choice is not exuding any level of confidence. I'm also not sold on their pick for GM.
😂😂😂Bitter snowflake waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Why do we care what you think about coaches lol regret coming here
This is a bad take…
Nah, it's on the money & the Washington Football Team will prove that over the next few years
Agreed. DP just wants a good story. He is also butt hurt Belichick wasn't hired. The dude is 71 years old! Call it a career and move on. Dan Quinn is nearly 20 years younger. The Cowboys Defensive players loved him. He will be better in Washington than Belichick in the long run.
Yup, all that love really helped in the playoffs.......@@wiseowl7336
Absolutely uninspired.
Nobody was offered the damn job EXCEOT Quinn. Nobody TRULY who they actually wanted from day one or if they even knew until all the interviews were done. So we should hire a HC BASED SOLELY on if we draft an offensive player or defensive player with our FIRST ROUND PICK? Are we serious right now? You guys are legitimately losing your viewership with these ridiculous comments and segments. Bill Belicheck is NOT relevant, he will NEVER coach again in the league. Why are yall still humming his tune? Are you in someone’s pockets? Hmmmm, IF Billy is actually the GOAT , then WHY don’t he have a job? Maybe TOM is the 🐐 and Bill rode his coat tail TO THE HOF Lmao 😂😂😂😂
Why don't THEY hire a COMPUTER? they are ageless and impervious to criticism and definitely will "TOE" the company line😅
