Oblivion's REMOVED and LOST City: Sutch - Lore, History and Ruins EXPLAINED

- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- In today's video, we discuss the long thought about and curiously removed tenth city in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Sutch. Sutch was supposed to be an extra playable main city along with the other that are already in the game. It was located North of Anvil and Northeast of Kvatch, fairly close to the border of Hammerfell. It even had its own county called County Sutch that saw it governing over much land to the Northeast. In this lore and historical video, we discuss little bits of evidenced left in the game from Bethesda, proving Sutch's existence. We also discuss how during the E3 Demo in 2005 for Oblivion, Sutch can be seen on the map and on the title screen. We discuss what's left of the main city, Fort Sutch. Then we go in depth about its history and we end off with speculation as to what NPCs, shops, guild factions and quests could have been involved in the city of Sutch.
Massive thank you to the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Wiki for the source material of all of the evidence and lore involved with Sutch.

the fact this was made 4 days ago in 2023 brings a tear to the eye 🥲 a happy tear. The legacy of a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing your findings.
Thank you for the support! I’m here for the lore and the analyses on this wonderful game! Even after 17 years!
Sutch a disappointment it is gone. Great vid!
Thank you for the support! I’ve been watching your content for awhile now! Huge inspiration for the channel!
Dark Lore Dash and yourself are my oblivion content libraries
I think when Todd mentioned the 9 mayor cities they didnt count Kvatch, as it was always going to be destroyed. And there was no or never has been found any cut content around Kvatch. But maybe I’m missing something.
That’s the leading theory I’ve been reading so far as well! They certainly left minimal bread crumbs of Sutch around the game, it’s mostly the E3 Demo that has everyone wondering where it went!
You are going to love this, I recently had the opportunity to play an early build of the ESO chapter (Gold Road) and I tried to make my way to fort Sutch. And guess what. There is a town there! I immediately thought of this video as I found it hah!
That’s so awesome! I hope it was everything that was promised for oblivion! 😂 how was the early play through?
@@ABardsBallad They only allowed around 30 minutes of playtime, half of it was spent in Skingrad and the other half I spent sprinting across the land to see if Sutch was a place. I didnt really manage to get anything tangible other than that Skingrad looks interesting (Seems to be only half built) and that Sutch is a place. And that I was very confused by some of the landscapes (which are under some sort of curse as they said in the trailers). It seems to be a smaller town tho, not a city, so its definitely not going to be what was suggested for oblivion. But hey, they at least aknowledged it.
Hey, this might sound weird. But, I appreciate your clear voice and pronunciation! A lot of videos about gaming and games that I like are made by people with an annoying sounding voice, or they mispronounce all the names. You are doing a really good job here!
Thank you for the support! I really appreciate it! I can’t tell you how many times I re-record lines to make sure it sounds correct and clear! 😂
i second this, you narrated very well
Is his pronunciation of Boethiah correct tho??
@@pinoarias8601 it's not xD blud probably never played Skyrim, ESO or Legends where it's pronounced BoEthia million times
I ain't him, but it doesn't sound weird to me. I HATE shitty audio. Even if the material is top-notch, if the audio is garbage, I can't listen to it.
It's always interesting to me how developers of these game worlds explain pieces of cut content in-universe through lore in later entries.
Yes it’s very interesting! Likely because in the previous games they mentioned Sutch and that’s why they had to keep it in ESO as well as have brief mention of it in Oblivion!
It's certainly not so that people could say "There's no Sutch place."
Sutch's changing hands from Hammerfell to Cyrodiil is not terribly surprising, the same thing happened to Falkreath, but it went from Cyrodiil to Skyrim.
Yes! I think given it’s proximity to the border, Sutch could have most definitely been under Hammerfell’s Jurisdiction at some point in time!
Also Dragonstar during the War of the Bend'r-mahk, and Lilmoth and probably many parts of southern Morrowind after the An-Xileel rise and Accession war.
Tamriel's borders during the 4th era are probably a mess😅
The Warp in the West.
Oblivion was such a magical game. Still is. The soundtrack is so serene.
It’s definitely my favourite Elder Scrolls game to this day!
I’ve thought for a while it’d have been cool to have had a ruined temple of Kynareth being reclaimed by the wild, what with her being associated with nature
That’s a pretty sweet idea! I’m surprised they never did anything to bring the one missing temple / chapel into the game! Even DLC!
Yes, interesting. In the KoTN dlc you have to go to a coven or grotto that’s dedicated to Kynareth. Perhaps they made this as a workaround for a missing temple in Such?
Cool I had no idea about Sutch’s backstory. Very good work! Subbed!
Thank you for the support! I really appreciate it! It really is fascinating to think of how Sutch could have changed the game or what new things we would’ve seen!
Oblivion doesn't have enough cool lore and cut content videos. Another great video
This one was tons of fun to study on and learn more about! Definitely one of my favourites to make!
Because it did so much right.
I think the issue with oblivion was they changed so much lore wise, from jungle to common medieval fantasy.. I imagine while being the least worked on
I do wonder if we get hammerfell sutch turns up as a reference
Oblivions sutch was destroyed and the people moved into hammerfell as they had more ties with those who lived in hammerfell, and with the time between oblivion, skyrim and ES6 it could be explained easily
Yes! It definitely seems like a lot changed from Morrowind to Oblivion, then from Skyrim to Oblivion was pretty crazy! Your absolutely right that if TES6 takes places in Hammerfell, they would have an easy way of explaining what happened to Sutch!
A shame we didn't get to see the city at it's glory, being so close to Hammerfell it probably had a heavy Redguard influence (kinda like Cheydinhal with Morrowind) and I personally really like Redguard culture and architecture. I was marveled the first time I entered Sentinel in TES: Daggerfall, with its huge palace and golden domes.
It may seem weird to have that desert-like architecture on a more "greener" biome, but we had real life examples of that (as in, for example, Umayyad Spain) and those were beautiful
Also great vid! I'm gonna sub just for the Oblivion content :p
Thank you for the support! I appreciate it! The aesthetics for the lost city could have been very interesting to see!
When they said 9 cities in the trailer, I think they meant 9 usable cities. Kvatch is dead when the game starts, and is naught but a ruin, and not a usable city.
Not too long ago I found out Skyrim had a cut town in the Falkreath Hold called "Granite Hill" it was cut but it's still mentioned between Jarl Sinding and his stewardess Nenya. It must have been cut late in development cause the area where it was supposed to be is now a dragon burial mound, but the ingame local map still calls it granite hill.
So thankful for your oblivion content, this game is one of the few things my older brother were able to bond with. This game, its lore and soundtrack keep me at peace. Keep going my friend!

Thank you for the support! Oblivion is definitely my favourite entry too and I’m excited to learn and share more lore quests and glitches! 😁
Oh! I never knew about this. But I kinda understand. Fort Sutch always has an Oblivion gate appearing nearby after Dagon shrine quest and it's one of those fixed gates that always appears there. I was wondering why, but now it makes perfect sense! I like your Oblivion content and I love Oblivion, got my sub!
Thank you for the support! Look forward to making new content to share with everyone! :)
There’s always a cool battle there between legion soldiers too
Sutch was a big city that started as a fort. It was bigger than Leyawin, if I recall correctly, or similar in size.
Maybe Tod says 9 major cities as he knows Kvatch is ruined already and therefore is not in the same group as the still functioning, alive cities?
Yes! I think that might be the leading theory so far that I’ve been reading!
I always thought they went with 9 cities for the 9 divines myself, and it completely slipped my notice all these years that Sutch is in the loading graphic. One mystery that I still crave an answer for is why there are so many roads that don't go anywhere in oblivion, it feels like there were a lot of locations cut from the final game, maybe there were more small towns or Abbeys than we finally got? And why are none of the smaller roads on the map FR, there's an entire procession of steps and trails leading to hermaeus mora shrine, with road signs, but no indication of any of it on the map. There is a haunted air to the province of Cyrodil, too many trails petering out in the middle.of nowhere and empty buildings for it not to be a little spooky, maybe unintentionally but I love it.
This is a super thought provoking comment! I never thought about all the dead end roads and trails! If Bethesda cut out Sutch, I’m definitely willing to believe they cut out a bunch more smaller settlements too!
World maps are often designed early on in the process, I suppose because it's a starting point for so many design aspects (certain artists, writers, level designers). So much changes during the dev cycle that it's simply not worth constantly updating high-quality renders of things like world maps unless there's a major change.
When it comes to Bethesda specifically, it has a track record with this. Fallout 3 has the world map in-game as a prop (in the Brotherhood HQ) that's the same image as the one in the UI, just a different version of it. New Vegas (I know, different devs, but they had to work with the same tools) has discrepancies like TES4 does, especially roads that don't appear on the world map or vice versa.
Every game has cut content, but these ones have tons. There are too many discrepancies to account for all the quirks of the world map vs. the actual worldspace, though. I bet at least some instances were simply an artist going "I'm thinking this road goes along here, then off there..." early on, then a bunch of stuff gets added to a whiteboard in the office, then before the team's done half of what they wanted to do, suddenly they only have a few months till release just to try fixing what's already in the game.
If you wanna see how deep the rabbit hole really goes, look up how the map of Tamriel has changed with every game. That stuff is less "huh, game design is chaotic" and more "I don't know what to believe any more". You can also see from older maps that Cyrodiil has more major towns than it does now, even within the modern borders, that either became villages/ruins in TES4 or just disappeared.
tl;dr: it's partly down to cut content, partly down to old lore getting twisted to fit the design of the new game, and partly down to human error.
P.S. Nine cities for nine Divines kinda is and isn't true at the same time. Todd and co. must've known Kvatch's chapel would've been ruined early on in development, then after Sutch got the cut, it was a sort of happy accident to go nine for nine... if you just ignore the Imperial City with an amazing statue to Akatosh and not even a single priest/monk/worshipper around.
Yeah, TES4 is flawed and broken and ridiculous, and I love it.
This channel is totally underrated
Gonna mod the city into the game. Gonna make it as detail packed as Imperial City is. Brb I'll link it when its done

Really cool video. I found out about Sutch via the Beyond Skyrim progress report videos and it was interesting to hear about. Didn’t know there was so much detail tied to it, especially well after Oblivion released.
Your Boethiah pronunciation threw me for a loop though haha
Thank you for the support! Yeah they definitely did a lot with Sutch and hopefully one day we’ll get to see it in a game!
😂😂😂 it was my first time coming across it’s name, I definitely should’ve looked up how to pronounce beforehand 😂 I was too confident in myself
I am currently in Sutch; It's overwhelmed by Vampires. Although this is in the West Weald of Elder Scrolls Online from the Gold Road Chapter. But Sutch does exist before the timeline of Oblivion starts place and it was destroyed between ESO and Oblivion.
Just found your channel. Time to binge.
This is a really well made video, definitely didn't expect this when I clicked on it. You deserve more subscribers
Thank you for the support! I appreciate the kind words! :)
Sutch was to have the second Fighter’s Guild questline, not Anvil. In one line of text it talks about meeting Azzan in Sutch or gro-Khash in Cheydinhal for contracts.
If you have oblivion for PC you can download one of a few mods that add Sutch into the game. Theres also mods to allow the player to rebuild Kvatch.
The mod would be really cool to have installed and see what people have come up with!
In the 2005 demo, the icon for Fort Sutch can already be seen in the centre of Sutch on the map. Combined with the fact that Todd stated there would be 9 major cities in total, I think this means it was already cut at this point, but they had not yet removed the city from the world map.
Something to note, digging in the game files: Azzan, the Guild Hall Leader in Anvil, was originally going to be in Sutch instead. In a quest log, it's said that you should return to Azzan in Sutch.
I'm glad someone is still making content on this game
Thank you for the support! All these years and it’s still an amazing game to come back to!
Very Cool video. Looking forward to new stuff by you.
Thanks for the support! I’m looking forward to putting more videos out there as well!
I want a video about Stros Makai. I know it's not in Oblivion, but it's such an interesting place with a deep history. The once proud capital of Hammerfell to a pirate den.
It can certainly be done! As long as there’s info on it anything is possible!
This video is fantastic! Thank you for making it
Interesting stuff! Theres some other notable changes with the map shown in the title screen and the actual map we see in game.
I had never heard about this. It was Sutch a suprise!
Bethesda did their best at trying to hide it but there’s definitely some bread crumbs out there!

It is more rewarding feeling for sure!
@@ABardsBallad very much so it also makes me more likely to actually explore the town to see if i unlock any other spots to travel
About Todd's comment on the "nine major cities." He could've been referring to all of the major cities at the time, along with Sutch - but _not Kvatch._ See, Kvatch is little more than a smoking hole in the ground by the time the game starts; so, its current status as a "major city" is questionable at best. So, while he technically should've said _ten_ cities, for all intents and purposes (as far as things like quests and factions go), there were only nine cities, when speaking in terms of actual gameplay.
That’s a very fair point! He totally could’ve been talking in terms of Kvatch already being destroyed! That’s an interesting angle to look at it from!
I'd love similar cut content videos on other TES games as well my man. Subbed for these type of content!
I definitely would love to make those videos too! Thank you for the support!
I heard of this city from the mod project related to Morrowind and RUclips recommended me to this video.
That’s pretty convenient! 😂 some mods would definitely be able to bring this city back to life!
Not having this city in game really is “Sutch” a disappointment. :P
😂 I like it! It really is a shame though!
What if the city of Sutch is Meridia's city that was moved to Coldharbor and became the Hollow City in ESO.
That’s a very interesting angle! It could definitely be something to look further into!
Tommorow I am uploading a video on what happened to Sutch in the second era (I got through some of ESO Gold Road). Im going to link this video to viewers if you are okay with that, going like "if you want to know more about the background of Sutch and its removal from oblivion, watch this excellent video by Bards Ballad". Is that okay?
Absolutely! That sounds like an amazing video! I’ll be watching it for sure! :) you can link whatever you’d like my friend! All good with me!
@@ABardsBallad thank you! This is one of my favorite videos of yours so I’d love to plug it in
Same deal with helgen in skyrim, would have been cool to see them rebuilt
Yes! It would’ve been amazing to see these 2 cities in full action!
Or Sutch was a true border city where it was supposed to be a cross river city when they wrote the lore. Half in Hammerfell, half in the Imperial Province.
Maybe! That would be really interesting if they did that! I’d love to see it done like that in a game one day!
Do Not Cite the Deep Magic to Me, Witch
Given that TES 6 is very strongly hinted to be set in Hammerfell it's possible we'll get a lore explanation for Sutch's disappearance.
how is TES 6 hinted to be in Hammerfell?
It’d be really cool to be able to finally get to see and explore the city if it was set in Hammerfell!
@@bierwolf8360 generally, the game prior gets a questline associated with the game next: morrowwind had a cult who were scared of an incoming daedric invasion. in skyrim, we have the alikir warriors and the thalmor questline. hammerfell is the only region to have resisted the thalmor invasion, which makes it a good setting for a continuation of the thalmor plot.
@@semicolon4452 I have heard people cite the Alik'r quest as a hint. Seems a rather unreliable indicator. I tried to find that Morrowind quest you mentionend but couldn't find anything the like. Finally, he said "strongly hinted". so I expect a bit more than this. When it comes to the story and setting of the next game, there are many things to consider. First and foremost, any decisions made by the player in Skyrim shouldn't be able to matter. That could be achieved twofold: a time jump or coming up with some explanation as to why all decisions led to the same outcome in a non-disrespectful way (mainly concerns the civil war). Seeing as most people expect TES VI to be centered around a second Great War and Bethesda probably wanting to meet fan expectations somewhat, it might indeed not be the time jump option. That would almost definetly rule out Skyrim as the next setting. It would be odd if they pivoted to make the Thalmor anything but the bad guys, hence why they'd probably strike first and thus we can conclude the setting would be Cyrodiil, Hammerfell or High Rock.
However, the only actual information about TES VI we have is the trailer video. I maintain that the trailer cannot have been set in Hammerfell. Analyzing the video, the sun is clearly over the sea, on the right. Most people that state Hammerfell will claim the video shows the northern coast of Hammerfell. If that were true, the sun would be in the north - which it never is. It's physically impossible. Further, the sun hangs rather low in the sky and casts long shadows, indicating this is either dusk or dawn. Thus it isn't a south coast either. Finally, in the clip, we see seagulls flying towards the ocean. They do that in the morning, not in the evening as they need to be able to see stuff. Thus, it's the morning sun which is in the east. We have identified the coast as being an east coast.
There are several places on Tamriel with an east coast, of course. Let's go down the list: Black Marsh: has a long east coast, but it's swampy and foresty. Quite unlike the trailer. Also, from what we know, it's a very unsuitable place for non-Argonians. It also wouldn't tie into the Thalmor business.
Morrowind: the southern east coast is described as "practically Argonia", while the Telvanni peninsula is rather dry with treacherous cliffs. Maybe that's it. I doubt it though. Most of the place was destroyed, after all. Plus, why?
Cyrodiil: specifically the Niben. Unlikely? Very. The area around Leyawin is green and fertile - and flat. Plus, while it's a wide river, it's not so wide we wouldn't be able to see the other bank. So, probably not Cyrodiil.
Summerset Isles: Described as very green and fertile. It doesn't seem like what's in the trailer, plus, it'd be weird given that most people now hate the Thalmor/Dominion/Altmer.
Hammerfell: has a bit of an east coast on the southern peninsula of Hew's Bane. It appears in the ESO thieves guild DLC. It's described as an extremly hot and dry place. Maybe. It's not totally impossible but I just don't really buy it. Plus, same as with the Leyawin argument, we should be able to see land towards the north and east as it's a narrow bay. Plus, the town showcased would then be "Abah's Landing", which itself is set in a bay.
High Rock: Finally, the one I actually think is the right answer. The Rivenspire in northern High Rock has an almost perfect east coast. It's a gloomy cold-dry place with coastal mountains. Its depicition in ESO matches the clip pretty well, I think. The town would be Northpoint.
@@bierwolf8360solid analysis but the issue with this is that bethesda is entirely willing to change geography as they see fit (cf Cydrodil's jungles) so i dont think a geographic analysis will necessarily be correct
i learned about the existance of sutch in a book in morrowind, i dont know the title anymore but it had a map in it from the empire and in cyrodiil there was a city named sutch
Yes! It’s really interesting how through our the rest of the games, we see little bread crumbs left over from the city of Sutch!

Hey! I got recommended one of your latest videos and decided to go back and watch them all! Great work!
Something I have a question about - you mentioned at the beginning that you can fast travel to all cities without needing to visit them. I remember on one playthrough, when I left the sewer, I immediately went into the Ayleid ruin across the water and when I exited that ruin, I couldn’t fast travel to any of the cities. Have you ever encountered that? It made me believe that the “being able to fast travel” was only available if you chose to do so right out of the sewer, and by not doing so you enable a sort of “hardcore” version where you can’t fast travel without visiting
While Kvatch absolutely is a city in the world, it isn't really one in the game considering it's destroyed and acts more like a "dungeon" so Todd mentioning that there are 9 cities could very well still mean that Sutch was still planned at that point.
That’s the leading theory I’ve been seeing at this point too! It certainly is plausible Todd no longer considered Kvatch a city!
Todd misspoke when he said 9 major cities. Forgot the Imperial City. I just did the same thing by counting up to 8 and forgetting the Imperial City.
I think they removed Sutch to retroactively make Todd's statement correct. 9 Cities. Didn't forget anything.
Quality content, I enjoy a good lore channel. Sutch a shame they cut this content.
Thank you for the support! 😂 I like it! It really is unfortunate to see the 10th city go though!
I think it would be really cool if Sutch had something going on that made it get scrubbed from history, maybe censor what happened to it by building another town named Sutch.
It would be interesting if they did a city remake!
The reason the PC of Oblivion can fast travel to the Major cities Immediatly is because they're from Cyrodiil (never left) unlike the Dovakiin (Who border crossed from somewhere) and the Nerevarine (who was deported or exiled). Thats my Headcanon anyway.
very well made video, im subing
Thanks for the support and the kind words! :)
Nine cities kinda make sense as a number though, given the Nine Divines, no? Great video though ^^
It does make sense on that count! It’s just interesting that Kynareth doesn’t have a chapel dedicated to it!
I believe Sutch is the victim of the dragonbreaks of Daggerfall and Morrowind specifically the Warp in the West it has been known to move places in time and had been known as different representations in that time. In short their is no Sutch without leaving the current prophesied timeline it exists in multiple places in multiple times as a result of the Elder Scrolls power. Lore into the futures of the Elder Scrolls means that the physical manifestation of the world can change with time and within the world canon.
All of the cites designs follow the general look of the land most near-by, maybe Sutch had a unique 'Hammerfell' visual-style, oh well.
Another banger 😊
Thank you for the support! :)
Isn't Azzan from Anvil's fighters guild also supposed to be in Sutch? According to some fighters guild book/roster still in the game.
You might be right! I’d have to take a look into it!
Only started playing around 2 months ago, but from when i heard about the knights of the nine, i assumed that each city represented one of them. Seems kinda stupid now
3:00 more likely Kvatch wasn't considered a city. Since it doesn't function as one in the game.
Yes! That’s likely the leading theory so far that I’m reading as to why he said 9!
I don't think Kynnareth would suit an indoor chapel! I like her outdoor shrine in the Knights of the Nine DLC
verry nice and refreshing video but maybe next time not use as many red circles they break the flow and i find them a bit distracting

Thanks for support! 😁
Although it indeed is mostly white, I consider Leyawiin´s guard the green one.. played hundreds of hours with that outfit.
I agree with you actually! I was thinking the same when I saw their uniforms. My logic was based off of the main colours of clothing we see around Cyrodil mixed with what lesser main colour we don’t see on the uniforms! Plus there are a few cities with red as their uniforms so we see that Bethesda isn’t above rescuing some colours! Yet totally agree with you that Leyawiin likely represents green!
Did you get East and West backwards throughout the entire video? You keep calling the top left of the map "Northeast". It seems really odd that there isn't already a comment pointing this out.

Oblivion was a great game but the cities lacked realism. They consisted of like 10 houses. Morrowind’s cities felt way more believable. Skyrim had the same problem as Oblivion but nowhere as bad
