The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

When it comes to game play, very little of the lore really matters or is even mentioned. My rule of thumb in joining a house, and I've joined all three at one time or other, is that the Redoran are dull and their quests not very satisfying; the Hlaalu are too laid back but very generous, and the Telvanni are laissez-faire to the point of do unto others as they would do unto you--and get away with it, no less. One Telvanni leader has a slave rebellion in her mine, so she tells you to go in and kill them all. Instead I find the slave key and give it to the leader of the rebellion, then I go back and report that they all escaped. Oh... Okay.

    • @Over_It
      @Over_It 5 лет назад +16

I agree, but instead of getting lazy, I think they heavily drew on whatever was popular at the time. Skyrim is obviously heavily influenced by early seasons of Game of Thrones. Oblivion clearly draws upon the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But LotR was the real milestone for high fantasy in the mainstream. Thus for Morrowind, influences that existed were animated kid's movies like Fern Gully, Thumbelina, old 1970s fantasy animation, Princess Mononoke/Slayers, or even DnD concept art for the time. You can clearly see all of those influences in Morrowind... but since most of that was foreign to the public at large, Morrowind comes off VERY uniquely designed in a way Oblivion or Skyrim don't (because we're used to seeing things like GoT or The Hobbit). Dunmer are obviously a unique take on the Drow, for example... but who back then would even know what a drow is?

@@Over_It Well, Morrowind came out in 2003, I'd been playing Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 full of Drow and Hordes of the Underdark, a dlc for NWN came out about that time too. Drizzt was popular in literature. Anyone who had been playing D&D even a little knew about Drow for at least a decade already. And everyone in fantasy drew from LotR since the 1950's. What made Morrowind stand out was its mythology and writing that drew on sources going back to the earliest stories of man, all the world creation stuff, aedra and daedra are adaptations of the world's mythologies. And they owe a heavy debt to Gregg Stafford and Runequest, Empire of the Petal Throne and other popular RPGs of the 70's and 80s that informed the writers of Morrowind from their childhoods. When I started playing Morrowind I realised Tamriel had gone from the quasi D&D of Daggerfall to full blown alien world. It never got back to those heights sadly.

Ah morrowind, the shining crown jewel of the elder scrolls series. It was my first game in the series and the one I'm looking back most fondly at. There is just so much creativity and deepth in this game, that the others just feel so incredible generic and boring in comparison.

  • @Xolcm

There are six Great House last in Morrowind, and an interesting thing is that each one has a foil, which are similar but distinctly different.
Redoran and Indoril are nationalistic, with strong ties to tradition and dislike foreign powers, such as the Empire. Redoran is composed of strong warriors who hack the government, and Indoril is comprised of spiritualists who hack the temple.
Hlaalu and Dres are both trade houses. Hlaalu trade in goods, who have strong ties with those outside of Morrowind, but are looked down on the native Dunmer, while Dres are slavers who deal in slaves, who have strong ties in Morrowind but are looked down on by those outside of Morrowind where slavery is illegal.
Telvanni and Dagoth are more about the strength of the individual instead of the House as a whole, who don’t care about politics, who will do anything to get ahead.

There are some things I disagree with. Regarding the Telvanni I think it should be noted that they aren't as racist as they may seem. They do accept outlanders in their order and let them ascend it as shown in ESO(Sun-In-Shadow) and TES III(Anora). In fact they are among the most meritocrayic houses. Since their criteria is how much someone encompasses and lives by the "Telvanni way".
Concerning their demise I am really surprised no one points out the inconsistency with the story that they were wiped out by the Argonians. Argonians made it up to Mournhold. Noone managed to advance to Vvardenfell. And Telvannis reside in northern Vvardenfell. And since the Argonian armeis reached Mournhold, this story of them slaughtering Telvannis seems too far fetched for me. Especially noting how to reach a Telvanni you have to be a really good mage and to kill one you have to be a national powerhouse. Telvanni Magisters afterall are terrifyingly powerful. Not too far behind(if behind at all) to the psijics.
It is far more likely that they were killed with the eruption of Red Mountain, than to any Argonian blade.

The Dark Elves could conquer tamriel if they actually worked as single Nation. They are excellent warriors, excellent mages, excellent strategists with a culture of combat and structure. And all dark elves live for hundreds of years sometimes thousands if they are magically talented.
They have the land (or at least had*) the land needed to support a standing army of mages and battalions of warriors. Natural barriers of mountains and volcanos that only they really thrive in. And a mainland protected by an ocean that they have singular control over.
They hold themselves back with archaic traditions of house on house warfare.
And slavery has been their biggest crutch for hundreds of years and causes their downfall after Red Mountain erupted and the argonians attacked. The argonians almost won. They attacked the dunmer at their weakest and could have taken all morrowind if it werent for the fact that Dunmer are even more tenacious than Argonians fueled with Hist sap.

I'd say that was basically evolution. After all a smaller body is an advantage in a country that isn't exactly known for food being there in big amounts. So I'd say the first Dunmer still were a lot taller than the modern ones. Considering the modern Altmer are the race closest to the original Aldmer, we can assume that all races of Mer originally were quite tall. So we should also assume that the Chimer were, like you pointed out, quite tall. (I suspect the first Chimer of Resdayn to be roughly the hight of a modern Nord)
But the Dunmer have lived in these harsh lands for several thousand years, so we can assume that their bodies kept changing in those millenias to secure their survival.
