legit, thank you! thought i was the only one who felt that! this was my JAM in my highschool days when i was just starting to deal with sexual trauma from my childhood as well as, in the current, dealing with my alcoholic and abusive dad. Dissociation mine as well be my middle fucking name. lol it was nice to have a artiest like her all her songs have this.. euphoria of numbed out, under currented emotions...ya know what i mean, this one though, just yeah so perfect for the dissociation shit i dealt with. Glad im not the only one :)
yeah, currently i'm dealing with the process of healing from severe trauma and as a result i dissociate a lot, and she perfectly captures what it's like. I'm glad to find someone else to relate to

St Vincent was one of the artists that helped me through the early and worst parts of the pandemic isolation. I'd always liked her and always of course loved her music, but I gained a deeper appreciation for her videos and absolute talent.
I have always believed this song was about panic attacks/social anxiety. The feeling that everyone is staring at you, stopping whatever they are doing, thinking about you, talking about you, following you. But when the panic attack is over or the anxiety is gone you realize it was all just a delusion in your head - no one cared or even really noticed you at all (as they have their own life to contend with).

As someone who has ADHD and bipolarism, I couldn't agree more, I also remember the line Star Wars: "Who is more fool? The fool or the fools who follow the fool?" I wonder if Jesus ever felt like this when the crowd followed him around expect him to perform the next mircial?

the lyrics are meant to portray the over-analysis, connections, and paranoia that anxiety sufferers endure. like, drawing connections in (directly) unrelated things and stuff.

Every time I hear this song, I get that scary feeling of a panic attack that I've had since I was little. At the beginning when you hear the heart beat, and the music makes everything feel surreal. That's how it feels like to me. Asking people for help, but can't because I'm trapped in my mind so everyone feels like they're in slow motion. I love this song.

I'm an old man, and I've been a fan for years. Annie Clark is the future. Great guitarist (Fripp-ish), great singer, great composer. She's visionary, in a way few musicians are.

THIS is what keeps the definition of original alive.
Seeing some theorizing, and will throw my thought in. I feel like she's imagining who potentially was killed at the side of the road, as she comes across the roadside memorial. As her mind continues to come up with possible stories, the collection of souls follows her train of thought as she thinks up more potential scenarios. Then she snaps back into reality at the end. I could be overthinking this, but as someone who overanalyzes things myself, this seems like an accurate depiction of what my mind goes through.
What I got at the end was that maybe she's a ghost of a woman who died in a car wreck and is stuck in a loop on that small path of road (the video ends in the same place it begins, so it's a loop), and this is just her seeing all the people who pass through / have interactions in that same spot while she walks, no way to get out of her predicament, begging them to help her, but when they look at her, they stop, stutter, cannot do anything to help her. i got mega chills.
She is so smooth. Yes, definitely yes.

I love the chaos in her music. It took time to grow on me, but it distinguishes her from everyone else. Love, love, love it.
I saw this girl supporting grizzly bear in Dublin in Nov '09, she had a tough job warming up for one of the best sets I've ever seen, but her presence, her musicianship, and tunes like this ensured I got this album, and I'm glad I did, a rare talent.

I try to work while listening to SV...but it's impossible. I find myself drawn in to Annie's vibe instantly, every time. When I finish a song and return focus (physically, mentally and emotionally) back to my now-insignificant computer screen, my "work" makes no sense and I have to start over. Thanks...I think.

Nothing frightening or creepy, but there's something going on that you can't quite put your finger on. Almost against your will you find yourself following her, trying to work out the mystery even as you wonder why you want to know so badly. Every now and then she turns and looks straight at you, but you realize that the world that she's in is not yours.

I feel like this song and music video could be about people being frustrated with their lives and wanting to break from ordinary experiences and routine. her lyrics are filled with references to jesus and mary. from the very obvious "jesus saves i spend" with chorus "come my love the stage is waiting. be the one to be save my saving grace." to more subtle human racing "mary dear - whats your fear - are you lost without your lamb - oh i think i understand." of course the nursery rhyme is 'mary had a little lamb' .... Jesus is the lamb.

A shot in the dark at what this video means - As she walks down the path of life singing her songs she picks up more and more fans who hear her and begin to follow her. The crowd of fans who wordlessly follow her grows larger, from all walks of life, but she can never connect with them. She doesn't have any sort of real Answer or Truth, she just has her song, but everybody seems to follow her like she's a prophet, when at the end she's just looking for help herself.
