Just last week i showed up to an anime con where they have free karaoke, and i started singing songs like machine gun kiss, 24 hour cinderella and baka mitai and a lot of people joined in, it felt nice that this game series is becoming more and more recognisable in public
I had to watch the video again cause I missed it. I just took that for Yakuza music and didn't even question why it was familiar haha. Gintama is the funniest anime I've seen, Gorilla and Madao are the best.
For the Yong Yea stuff, an additional factor for the fandom drama is that Kiryu already had an English VA (aka Darryl Kurylo) in Yakuza on PS2 who came back for Y:LAD after 15 years or so, therefore one can understand the unfairness of a VA replacement, especially for an older incarnation of Kiryu (tho according to Kurylo, SEGA wanted Kiryu to be voiced by someone of asian descent, which is a fair point also).
I think the bigger problem was how Yea handled it. He was hyprocite and arrogant next to his usual drama content on his channel. If he had kept his mouth then the drama would have been contained
Here is my theory on the whole Tiger Drop meme 1. kids that grew up on action movies and Chuck Norris Facts are now adults and some are gamers 2. Those young adults want to find some medium which is filled with fisticuff action, not Marvel CGI and superpower BS, along with some absurd humour. 3. They come across Yakuza series and find what they wanted...somewhat.(or maybe more including a truckload of Majimas) 4. Then they find Kiryu and his Tiger Drop. 5. They immediately project Chuck Norris and Roundhouse Kick onto Kiryu and Tiger Drop and immediately go on to make Kiryu the Chuck Norris of the gaming world. Done.
I love how the fact that yakuza has a serious story but 90% of it's hilarious moments comes from it's substories i think they might be more of a filler episode within the game but at least they show us the silly goofy side of kiryu
I don't even know why the Yakuza 6 character renders are used as memes but there's just something funny about them and that game specifically. There's a reason some people call it "the one with the big fucking boat". Same thing with the LAD cover and Ichi's stupid fucking grin.

Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami 1 are still my favourite game of all time regardless of genre. I cannot pick between the two because asking me to pick between the two is like asking apparent to pick their favourite child it's impossible. And shiawase nara ii ya (as long as you're happy) will we'll always make me shed tears.
For hate part, There's explanation for each one. -Blockuza 3 part was mostly a problem since OG version but it's getting worse in remastered vers since it's really messed up AI so bad they blocked more often. And they nerfed quickstep cancel distance which was powerful move against blocking enemy on early games. So yeah, Enemy do block a lot. But there's also plenty other way to deal with it. Wallbounding combo, Weapon, Blades weapon or grab abusing, You named it. At the end of the day, People do button mashing alone and expect it to work on blocking enemy are really stupid. -For Infinite Wealth, People love this game for gameplay but hate for plot. Concept sound great : Redemption arc of Kiryu, Finding Ichi's mom, Test Ichi by putting him in same situation as Kiryu was during Kiwami and see how he will deal with it, Kiryu correct his past, Seeing how Yakuza's existence affect outside world as a whole. Except they executed it really badly. Yes, Gameplay is fun but they seem to forget what make Yakuza great is story, Not gameplay. Not to mentioned there are so many pointless scene compared to previous titles, Weird ending part where they try to make us feel empathy with character who did bad thing then never show up again until the end, Abrupt ending. Story feel really weak compared to 6, Gaiden, 7 or Lost Judgment. Not to mentioned they also made really weird decision, Putting NG+ mode behind paywall. There are also really stupid fake-woke controversy caused by people who don't even play the game to see real context behind those words and try so hard to say like "Oh my god she's hardworking woman!?!?!? RGG GONE WORK THEY FELL OFF FRFR" which make me facepalm like a lot. Me? I don't really hate these two. I mean I still enjoy them for being whatever they are. They are flawed games, But that doesn't mean I have to hate it just because other did so. You know, Something about being yourself 'til the end lol. I still love some story aspect of IW and like to see more goofy side of Ichi and love feeling of combo in 3.
Tbh I actually enjoyed IW story much more than 6. 6 didn't have a lot of memorable characters and also sucked hard as an ending for Kiryu. I don't disagree that IW had some flaws but it was at least a happy and somewhat conclusive ending for Kiryu.

My issue with IW is not necessarily the story being very weak, but because of two things: Repetiton of trivial plot points while not ever delving deeper on more complex ones, and the ichiban parts having 2 chapters of pure filler and having a disappointing final boss. Like i understand why Bryce is the final boss, but come on...
Can someone say the why IW story sucks (idm spoilers). I have the game sitting in my steam library for months now. I wanna know what I'm getting into. For me the plot of LAD sucks with so many story beat getting dragged out (ex. Nanban's betrayal and the election) but it got carried by Ichiban hard.

idk if i agree with the takes in the video, but its an amazing watch still. Love to see people just talk about the series in general, since it gives a different perspective from what i experienced. I personally found all the games to be amazing, basically at least 9/10s or 10/10s all the way through. The complaints people have i also find to be generally just preferences and never any objective criticism. Its also great that its an expanding franchise, i wouldn’t call it niche anymore, even if its not the first franchise some people would think of when thinking about games. Also the community is basically THE best and most inviting community i know, there is no discrimination or room for it in the fandom, which is probably one of the reasons it is able to just mess around with for example the like a dragon meme. Getting into the series is one of the most changing moments of my life, and its amazing how just playing some games can change how you percieve life itself. Tiger Drop doesn’t negate all damage and in some games there’s certain attacks that can’t be Tiger dropped like the final boss of 3 has some moves like that

People I know had burn out, but I played everything back to back. Zero to 6, both judgements, and also ishin. I bought gaiden day 1 and it was amazing. I'm currently on my legend playthru where I started over and now I'm now on Yakuza 5.
A lot of people oppose change, not because it's just a change, but because they've seen what happens to other franchises when they go mainstream. By having more people join, any edginess starts getting censored, as it'll be more problematic. Some new "fans" will demand changes to either fit their fantasies or make changes for the sake of changes. And when hollywood get their hands on license, they shit it up with politics or stupid decisions, almost none of original fans remain. Gatekeeping is a good thing.
I wouldnt say people are opposed to changes but more like some changes makes no sense. Like Yongyea dubbing a Kiryu that is....how old at this time ? around 60ish ? I play with JP voices so I dont exactly care but I can tell you if Kiryu and Majima arent voiced by Takaya Kuroda and Hidenari Ugaki for no apparent reason, that's going to be hard to accept. I would rather see Kiryu retire and get replaced by another one who is also voiced by Takaya rather than keep Kiryu but suddenly he is someone else.
Even if kiryu get hit once by kratos kiryu can just open his own pocket diamension and pull out 20 bottles of anabolic growth hormones and steriods and inject it straight into his chest and regain all health plus a bottle of alcohol of any kind and gain double damage (Kiryu doesnt do drugs)

I mean I’m pissed because they switched the mainline story’s free flowing gameplay with a bad ass role model for a main character… too a restrictive (albeit vastly improved in 8) turn based fighter with a main Character whose so “quirky XD” and insane that the in game explanation is that he’s hallucinating and thinks he’s in a dragon quest game. Just me tho? Like imagine playing the next Arkham game and instead of letting you play as anyone from the bat family, they make you play as polka dot man. Doesn’t sound great on paper, is only slightly better in execution. But not series altering better.
Been watching your channel for a while now Totaraum and every time I do I wonder how you don't have more subs. You're stuff is so tightly written and edited - these days it feels like even big youtubers i Like can drag on - just eating up more and more of your time with filler. It leaves you feeling antsy after a while, almost... itchy. But not your videos Toaraum, they've never make me feel itchy - bar none. I am not gonna lie but I started playing Yakuza 0 in April or May and now a couple of weeks ago I went ahead and bought the 2 kiwami games, the 3 remastered games, 6, 7 and judgment and I gotta say I totally fell in love with the series especially the stories of the games have all been amazing in their own ways but of course in that game series the games got their problem I only played Yakuza 0, 7 and kiwami 1+2 and I am now in chapter 4 of Yakuza 3 and you know the stuff the enemies that perma block is kinda horrible as well as the damage of the heat actions and I will play that game even if the combat is kinda hell I really wanna see that character arc of kiryu that he goes through in 3 and I will get through it on hard mode so what I wanna say is even with those clear problems of the games I will still love that series without overlooking the flaws of the series

19:00 It's not about change in of itself, change is good. It becomes a problem when said change takes away the elements that made the series famous or good to begin with. Like I didn't mind the protagonist being changed, I kinda grew to like Ichiban. Not as much as Kiryu but still. I didn't mind a change in scenery either, there's only so many times you can roam the streets of Kamurocho before it starts getting dull. I did, however, mind the change to one of the core elements of the franchise, that being the combat. ESPECIALLY since the in game reason they gave for said change is idiotic and only gets worse as the series goes on

great and funny video, it's giving me a lot of inspiration for my Video on Yakuza but real quick, if nobody has said this before, maybe take a beat longer on the transitions its hard to read because it's gone so fast but all in all really good
everytime i enter a street fight in the old engine yakuza games like 0 id slowly spin my camera around as kiryu does his little knuckle cracking animation (like a dynamic intro)
People I know had burn out, but I played everything back to back. Zero to 6, both judgements, and also ishin. I bought gaiden day 1 and it was amazing. I'm currently on my legend playthru where I started over and now I'm now on Yakuza 5.

A lot of people oppose change, not because it's just a change, but because they've seen what happens to other franchises when they go mainstream.
By having more people join, any edginess starts getting censored, as it'll be more problematic.
Some new "fans" will demand changes to either fit their fantasies or make changes for the sake of changes.
And when hollywood get their hands on license, they shit it up with politics or stupid decisions, almost none of original fans remain.

I wouldnt say people are opposed to changes but more like some changes makes no sense. Like Yongyea dubbing a Kiryu that is....how old at this time ? around 60ish ? I play with JP voices so I dont exactly care but I can tell you if Kiryu and Majima arent voiced by Takaya Kuroda and Hidenari Ugaki for no apparent reason, that's going to be hard to accept. I would rather see Kiryu retire and get replaced by another one who is also voiced by Takaya rather than keep Kiryu but suddenly he is someone else.

I mean I’m pissed because they switched the mainline story’s free flowing gameplay with a bad ass role model for a main character… too a restrictive (albeit vastly improved in 8) turn based fighter with a main Character whose so “quirky XD” and insane that the in game explanation is that he’s hallucinating and thinks he’s in a dragon quest game. Just me tho?
Like imagine playing the next Arkham game and instead of letting you play as anyone from the bat family, they make you play as polka dot man. Doesn’t sound great on paper, is only slightly better in execution. But not series altering better.
Been watching your channel for a while now Totaraum and every time I do I wonder how you don't have more subs. You're stuff is so tightly written and edited - these days it feels like even big youtubers i Like can drag on - just eating up more and more of your time with filler. It leaves you feeling antsy after a while, almost... itchy. But not your videos Toaraum, they've never make me feel itchy - bar none.

I am not gonna lie but I started playing Yakuza 0 in April or May and now a couple of weeks ago I went ahead and bought the 2 kiwami games, the 3 remastered games, 6, 7 and judgment and I gotta say I totally fell in love with the series especially the stories of the games have all been amazing in their own ways but of course in that game series the games got their problem I only played Yakuza 0, 7 and kiwami 1+2 and I am now in chapter 4 of Yakuza 3 and you know the stuff the enemies that perma block is kinda horrible as well as the damage of the heat actions and I will play that game even if the combat is kinda hell I really wanna see that character arc of kiryu that he goes through in 3 and I will get through it on hard mode so what I wanna say is even with those clear problems of the games I will still love that series without overlooking the flaws of the series

And because of that I've found 24h cindarella. And because of that I've found Majima... and because of that 4 years later my life is different. I regret nothing.

First time I played this series I was so happy and felt all kinds of emotion everytime I play then when Like a dragon went out I was overly excited because the game is now turn based. I love both the beat em up and turn based gameplay
