I took the shot of updating to 16.1 on my 5th gen iPad. Initially it was usable but as I opened and ran more apps, the voice recognition tanked-slow and inaccurate transcription amongst other issues. I hard reset and the voice recognition was better, but only temporarily. I won’t downgrade to 15.7.1 for now, hoping that 16.2 improves the memory Mgt. For older iPads, based upon lack of added utility of 16.1 on older iPads, stick with 15.7.1.
My old 2015 iPad Pro 12.9" (1st Gen) is the oldest supported device! Although it does have a more powerful A9X chip and 4GB RAM so it should perform better than this 5th Gen iPad but this does look pretty good for beta 1!
Thank you for your review! I’ve got an iPad Pro 9,7 and I was wondering how iOS 16 runs on older iPads. Hope to see more review of iOS 16 in the future! :)
Just got mine in the mail today. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U The corners of the box was a little smashed but I think that’s more of the shipping’s fault. iPad was in perfect condition though. I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.
I currently have an ipad 5th gen, and I’m afraid it’ll stop functioning properly after I get ipadOS 16, so I’ll stay at ipadOS 15. As of right now it is already slowing and it just gets worse and worse.
I can see why the iPad 5th & 6th gen got iPadOS 16, while the iPhone 6S (also plus) and 7 (also plus) didn’t get iOS 16. Well it’s because iPad wasn’t able to get the customisable Lock Screen. If iPadOS 17 supports it, I can expect iPads that hold the A9 & A10 chip to drop support because the iPhone 6S & 7 got left behind on iOS 15 because iOS 16 got the customisable Lock Screen, so it makes sense to drop support for the A9 & A10 iPads next year if iPadOS 17 gets the customisable lockscreen. I can expect the iPads to get it next year because when iOS 14 got released, the iPads were only able to customise the widgets on the today & search area in iPadOS 14. But when iPadOS 15 got released, they were able to get customisable widgets on the Home Screen. Hopefully I’m correct about this 🤞🤞
Completely wrong. The correct answer is money. People tend to buy phones more frequently than tablets, so Apple, a company that strives to think different for its investors and shareholders, dropped it for the phones and kept it for the tablets. Because if customizing a lock screen is a tedious task for Apple’s silicon, then Android phones that can customize theirs from as old as 2011 are gigachad mighty then. All these current decisions Apple are doing are just to incentivize their users to buy newer products from them, which would be fine if there was a legitimate reason to actually buy a new product from a company that virtue signals enviro-friendliness, but nope, it’s bs money and greed.
@@MikeCobweb yeah, they could’ve made it an A11+ feature if that was the reason. A far more compelling reason to explain the drop was battery life, but even then that falls flat when you see they dropped the 7 plus which had far better battery life than the 7 and 6s
@@AndresMind if the iPads will get a customisable Lock Screen, then maybe iPadOS 17. If not, they’ll probably even support iPadOS 18. But I’ll expect them to lose support in 2025 with iPadOS 19.

Thank you for covering this topic! My mom owns and uses an iPad 5 regularly. I am helping her decide whether it will be worth her updating to iPadOS 16.
I have an iPad 5th gen with iPadOS 13.6.1 and-the SimCity BuildIt app runs terribly slow along with some other apps. I know a fresh install would some, but some of my apps will be ultimately useless in short time. Will be looking to update to a newer iPad. Probably use the old one just a browser and other small tasks.
To be honest iPadOS 16 is super optimized. I'm happy that Apple still care about old devices unlike Androids. And please stop saying iOS. iOS is for iPhone. iPadOS for iPad..
@@giacomo7257 It might perform good because my old iPad Air 2 is on iPadOS 15.7 and runs fine. The 5th generation iPad has newer and better hardware so it should perform better than my iPad Air 2 with the A8X chip while the 5th generation iPad has the A9 chip.
It’s only for iPads with M1, A12X, A12Z, chipsets including: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation), 5th generation iPad Air, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), and iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation). Well I think that IPadOS it’s more demanding than iOS, but iOS needs the neural engine to have all that fancy features that iOS 15,16 need and neural engine it’s only on iPhone 8 or newer. So maybe iPhones like the 6s could easily support iOS 16 but without the majority of the new features (I mean even the new lockscreen could be missing bc of the neural engine). And also they have to keep upgrading the majority of iPads bc of the schools, nowadays iPads have been focusing more on the educational environment. A similar case was when the wii haved received just dance 2020 but Xbox 360 or ps3 didn’t
I think they don’t support iOS 16 because they have completed their 5-6 years of updates cycle. But the 5th generation iPad is still in its update cycle in that 5 year cycle so it gets iPadOS 16 while the iPhone 6S, iPhone SE, and iPhone 7 don’t get it due to having their complete update cycle.

Don't ipad use normally less powerful processors anyway since they don't need as much power? So it does make sense that updates that one.
