I bought my iPad fifth GEN two weeks ago at a garage sale. It was labeled $50 and I paid $20. I’m not using this for anything high-end. I doubt I’ll ever take a picture with it. I use it as a media consumption device reading books, eNewspapers, RUclips, cable TV app, Netflix, music and radio. And for that it seems to be perfectly fine. I believe the current iOS version for this is now 16.7.8 so it is still getting updates. I think people get way too hung up on having the latest and greatest tech and don’t realize that technology from several years ago still performs very nicely unless you’re doing very high-end activities like editing video and the like.

I actually have both and it depends on your need. Even the Gen 5 iPad is the better tablet but if you are an Amazon Prime member and listen to Prime music, audiobooks, even as an Alexa vase.. and definitely watching movies on the aspect ratio of the Fire 10 would be my choice.
In terms of hardware specs, the Fire HD 10's better, but in terms of operating system efficiency and available apps, I'd give that to the iPad 5th Gen. Even as someone who likes Amazon, I still prefer the functionality of the iPad. Despite being a newer tablet, the Fire tablet browses and views videos at about the same speed as the iPad. In terms of gaming, the difference isn't very significant. The iPad 5th Gen can't handle more demanding games like Genshin Impact, but the Fire HD 10 does it a little better (unplayable on iPad, low frame rate on Fire). In that regard, both of these devices will work great with emulators straight from their respective app store, most notably RetroArch. Basically, if you're just looking for something for basic web browsing and videos, iPad 5th Gen does that really well for an older tablet. For that matter, the 5th gen still performs better than most newer budget tablets. However, if you want an upgrade for gaming, I'd probably recommend a 10th gen iPad or even the Fire Max 11. Fire Max 11 can at least run Genshin at a playable frame rate, but without a doubt, the 10th gen iPad is the better tablet for literally everything.
