    I live in California and I took the morning after pill when I was raped when I was 18 - The trauma of being raped was horrific but the idea that I'd get pregnant with this vile person's child went beyond any fear I've ever felt. Abortion wasn't as accessible back then and I didn't want it to come to that. I went to Planned Parenthood the next morning and they made me a prompt appointment for testing, assessment, and a Pap smear. They were so kind, nonjudgmental, and understanding of my situation. They provided me with a morning after pill, explained the side effects, and how to use it. The brand I used was called Plan B One-Step and I got my pap, my testing, and my morning after pill free of charge after applying for a program PP offers. Not only this but, at the time, I was dealing with blaming myself for the whole situation so I wasn't ready to tell anyone what had happened. I lied to my doctor about being raped so that she wouldn't report it but I was afraid she'd have to call my legal guardian anyway. They promised full confidentiality and even ensure they won't say they are from PP if they call with my test results. Whenever I can, I donate to Planned Parenthood because they made a traumatic experience far less stressful and less shameful. Anyway, that's my story with the morning after pill and Planned Parenthood. I don't know if I would have gotten pregnant but the morning after pill eased that fear and I'm so glad it exists. Thought I'd share.

      zA plan Physically, I recovered quickly. Psychologically, I had to go to years of therapy for that and other abuse issues. Though I don't know that I'll ever find "peace" with what happened, I did eventually get to a place where it stopped affecting things like my self-worth, my body image, and my relationships. I dealt with some intense shame and PTSD but I am a perfectly heathy (mentally and physically) sexually active adult now :) Thanks to places like Planned Parenthood and the brave women that have shared their similar stories and struggles.

    Also important to mention: you can be allergic to the pill.
    If you notice any weird rash, itching, swollen lips or tongue, shortness of breath, or other reactions for up to 24 hrs after you took the pill, just get your ass to the ER asap.

    4 years ago when I was 18 is when I first took the morning after pill and I remember saying to the pharmacy when they tried to charge me like 30 quid for it: "isnt it free for people under 25?" and because I questioned them, they couldn't argue with me about it since I also had my ID on me ;) so I've never had to pay for it (not that I've taken many times, only 3 times in my life because I'm super paranoid about getting pregnant!)

    • @ninecastles
      @ninecastles 7 лет назад +5

      I really wish I'd known that before. I was so poor at university and I had to pay the full amount on a couple of occasions. I'm so annoyed because they asked for DoB along with other information. This was the pharmacy in Tescos >

    • @McInHeather
      @McInHeather 7 лет назад +3

      I can't remember how I found out about it, I think I must have googled "how to get the morning after pill for free" and saw it's free for young adults (bless the NHS) :P

    • @banandababa
      @banandababa 7 лет назад +1

      It depends on the pharmacy. Some pharmacies offer it for free and others do it privately and so you have to pay £26. But a little bit of research online will tell you where you can get it for free in your local area.

    • @McInHeather
      @McInHeather 7 лет назад +2

      ***** i mean, don't quote me on it as i learned this 4 years ago, it might have changed today! Haha well that's another way you can get it I guess! ;)
      I also have a medical exception card, but I dunno if I can use that with the morning after pill.. ***** do you know the answer to this? :)

      Karen Mae on a psychological level it technically could be if you think about it; but scientifically speaking, you are correct.

    • @MG-vw2qy
      @MG-vw2qy 7 лет назад +31

      Alex Betts Then are you also saying that taking any kind of contraception is abortion?

    • @beffanyp
      @beffanyp 7 лет назад +39

      Hannah clearly states the difference in the video; one *prevents* a pregnancy, the other *terminates* a pregnancy that has already occurred.

    • @jaimewilliams5609
      @jaimewilliams5609 7 лет назад +18

      Karen Mae ikr, they're logic is basically saying "NOPE YOU CSNT USE CONDOMS THAT ABORTIONNNN" and honestly I don't understand why it's any of their business if someone has an abortion or not anyway

    • @alexbetts1701
      @alexbetts1701 7 лет назад +2

      just to clear up this is not my opinion, I'm just saying I know a few people who feel this way and it's fair to respect their opinions. Also, they are in no way complaining about other people's uses of contraception but merely their own.

    Just the episode I was waiting for! I'm originally from Malta and the MAP was only made available a few weeks ago... and not all pharmacies want to stock it either! Abortion is illegal there and for some unfortunate reason MANY people think it's abortive. There have been intense debates about it and so many misconceptions and anger to this day. The pill was never illegal but was never available. Hope you don't mind me sharing this video on a FB group full of Maltese women. You explain everything perfectly, thank you!

    • @MariaGalea21
      @MariaGalea21 7 лет назад +4

      Cheers for the reply! Will definitely share it :) And yeah I actually took it for granted it was available up until the petitions started. Those who are against the MAP have been asking for an app with all the pharmacies who have it in stock it so that they can boycott them. It's all messy and all for lack of education. Hopefully things will move even further this year and it will be made available in all pharmacies! Thanks again for this episode + the whole series actually!

    I feel like Hannah's video's should be on the British school curriculum. As a 14 year old I am dragged to school. I have to watch a near dying biology teacher once a fortnight regurgitate a sexual education text book. Yeah it is great but it's so fucking formal. If they just whacked on one of Hannah's video everyone would pay attention because she's a cool casual Millennial like us.😂😂😂

    The timing of this video! On the weekend I needed to get the morning after pill but I live in the countryside and I don't drive so I couldn't go anywhere but I knew I could order it online off super drug which was the most stressful experience ever. The service for immediate use wasn't available but the service for later use was so I used it but as I wrote in my notes that I had unprotected sex in the past three days the doctor denied my request because I needed it immediately instead of later (stupid, i know) so I had to reorder it, once again the immediate service was down so I used the later use service again but lied. So finally I got my request accepted but it ended up costing £80 because the first request was paid for so I had to wait for a refund and I had to pay for next day delivery because I live in Northern Ireland so next day means 2 days. This is the second time I've used it, this time the side effects weren't bad but the first time was horrendous.
    Also I'm loving this series, thank you so much for making it

    I'm glad to hear you share that you felt fine after taking the morning after pill! I had the same experience where I thought the morning after pill would make me so nauseous--my gym teacher had told me that I would be on the toilet all weekend long if I ever took the morning after pill--and I didn't feel anything out of the ordinary at all. It's good to know about the possible side-effects, but also keep in mind that it's usually never that bad and unless you have some health contradiction to taking emergency contraception, you shouldn't let horror stories scare you (especially from people who used emergency contraception 15+ years ago as it was much different then).

    I took the morning after pill about a month ago for the first time ever and because nobody was in the pharmacies near me that could approve it or somethingridiculous like that, poor 17 year old clueless me who had the flu and her similarly clueless boyfriend had to pay £30 for it. Someone's probably mentioned this already, but I feel like I need to mention that it is not easy to get everywhere and usually isn't free. That part of the video only applies to the UK. I know it's also available over the counter from pharmacies in Spain but it's not free there. In the US it depends on which state you're in; it should be easy to get but also not free (it can cost up to $50) and some states may require a prescription from a doctor. In Germany it's by prescription only and not covered by insurance, so also not free. I'm not sure about other countries but it will vary depending on where you are.

    Btw I currently live in Gibraltar that is part of the UK and discovered that the morning after pill is only available with a doctor's prescription.. basically if you have sex on a Friday you have to wait till Monday to see your doctor and cannot be assured that they would agree to prescribe it... it is really a shameful situation. Hopefully you can cross the border and head to any pharmacy in Spain and buy it.

    I had to take it last year. It was night and I totally panicked, but my boyfriend was calm and sweet and tried his best to calm me down. The next morning we went to the pharmacy together and got it. He payed half of the price, I payed the other half. I didn't feel too well for a while, but nothing major... He tried to distract me and took very good care of me. I'm so grateful he was there and kept his calm for me. I know he was worried, too, but in that moment he didn't show it and was simply there for me, preventing me from having a full on panik attack :D

    This was such a great video! I had no idea there were two types of morning after pill - the school nurse during my sex ed classes would just say it will only work up to 3 days after and didn't give us ANY info on how to get it

    Ahh, love this series!
    I have had to take the morning after pill on 2 occasions. The first I was 15 and petrified, I didn't know at the time you could get it from the pharmacist without consulting a doctor first so I asked my mum to buy it instead. I then threw that up within an hour (had pretty bad nausea and headache as side effects) so she went and bought another. I cost her £45 that day, she was not too happy. However, the second time I took it I was 19 and it was absolutely fine, no side effects at all.
    I have tried being on the pill/ most other forms of contraception but I get really bad side effects with the pill and the PMS/ rage.. jeeeeeeez. :') I only rely on condoms, which have been very effective (except those 2 occasions it broke), but I'd say pretty successful. I am looking at other forms of contraception atm as well though just to be extra safe! So really appreciating this series! Thank you Hannah :)

    You can get the morning after pill for free there?! Damn. I live in the US (Texas) and it costs $50 at the drugstore.

    This was a great video, really interesting. My school was fairly crap with PSHE past the pill and condoms. The most I can remember is having a lesson on it and then a test the next week where we had a list of the different contraceptives (ie pill, implant etc) and had to put them in a column saying whether it was a male/female preventative (ie guy wears a condom, girl takes the pill) and then saying what they did to stop pregnancy. Literally, that was it.
    I also thought the myth of the morning after pill only working the day after was true so it was nice for it to be debunked.

    i think you really really do a good job with this series, especially for younger girls, i wish i would have known someone, who makes all of it sound so easy and unproblematic. i had good sex ed in school, but it all always remained kind of a mysterious subject. Sex and Health can be a little scary, when you did not have any or little experience, so i am sure, you are really helping many people with your videos :)

    Love this video Hannah! Do you happen to know if it's true that each time you take the morning after pill, the less effective it gets? I've been told that quite a few times but I'm not sure if it's actually true.

    It's super cool that this service exists! In Germany, there was a huge debate on whether the morning after pill should be freely distributed in pharmacies not very long ago. I'm not even sure if the legislation changed, but people used to be required to talk to a doctor about the consequences of taking emergency contraception before being "allowed" to pick it up at a pharmacy.
    Your video was incredibly insightful, and I really want to research if something like this exists in Germany as well.

    • @TheLuluTrue
      @TheLuluTrue 7 лет назад

      ah I just checked it: You don't need to visit a doctor anymore in order to get emergency contraception in Germany, but there's a "discrete interview" at the pharmacy about all the information you mentioned as well (time of unprotected sex, allergies, side effects). BUT: it costs between 14 - 30 euros which I just think is crazy.

    I've taken the morning after pill 3 times in one year. I had just had my second baby in March of 2010 and that year I ended needing it 3 times. My doctor was struggling to find a method of birth control that I didn't have a reaction to so my husband and I were relying on condoms. I have a latex allergy and latex free condoms were joke back then. It didn't matter what brand you bought, if you used lube or not, they would constantly break. I called a free health advice line they have here in Canada and was advised to go to the pharmacy and get Plan B. Never had a reaction it and it was super easy to get. It was $40 for one treatment. Fortunately I got my tubes tied at the end of that year and have never had to worry about it since.

    In the US you can get the morning after pill at almost any super center without seeing a doctor or a pharmacist which is pretty awesome. I've never had to use it, but I know it's easy to get if I do need it.

    Just a heads up, Levonelle is available for free from Boots if you are willing to share personal information to the available pharmacist. EllaOne is also available from them but they do charge about £35 for it (it is marginally more effective though)

    A just in case morning after pill is a good thing to have on hand. When I was traveling through Europe for a few months with one of my friends we both had a "just in case" pill. We didn't want to end up in a country where we didn't speak the language trying to get a hold of one.

    One LIFESAVING tip: Always have a morning after pill in your house! If the condom breaks, you don't have to panic, because you already have a morning after pill. It prevents stress and money when you don't really have it (since it's quite expensive). My mom saved me like this and I returned the favor to my roommate when she had an accident.

    I remember once a few years ago when I was 17 my friend (also 17) needed to get the morning after pill after a broken condom scare and we found out that even though the age of consent in Ireland is 17, pharmacist couldn't give the morning after pill to anyone under the age of 18 without their parents permission! She did end up getting it off a pharmacist who effectively broke the law to give her it but I always thought that was such a strange law!

    When you mentioned birth control failing, I had really hoped you'd mention the other things that could affect the pill (antibiotics, grapefruit, etc). I've found so many people aren't aware of that being a thing. Also would like to hear about MAP and weight. I've heard that it's not as effective for those over a certain weight, but haven't found out if that's true or not.
