There is/was a 3ft, 15lb brownie in that plunge pool underneath the dam that ate a 14 inch rainbow that I had on the line once. That was about 7 years ago. Been troubling my mind ever since. I need to get up there again.
Just saw this (a few years too late) and I want to thank you for an excellent video. You also did a video on Chittenango Creek in Central New York. I was wondering how the two streams compare in your view (in terms of numbers of fish, size of fish, the whole experience, etc.)?
My father did fireplace work for Lefty. Great guy. Learned a lot from him. The Gunpowder is a gem. There at the dam you can catch anything, and I’ve caught serious rainbows and brownies there.
Lived in Baltimore through the eighties fished gunpowder every chance I got also thanks for talking about the rock snot it’s spreading I put my waders in trash bag clean them at home with mild soap hot water rinse off weak bleach water
Giving your location. Will help veiwers found . Easy access to great fishing.. That is really kind of you. Also showing your flies and Set up.. All for better fishing.. Thanks for sharing with Us..
I disagree. Finding locations and making your own discoveries by observing nature is part of the joy of fly fishing. Giving it all away like you all do is foolish. Some day you may realize this. You guys with your constant showboating/advertising re ruining this sport. MANY agree with me but they will not state it on a public forum. Some very nice places are now POUNDED on a daily basis throughout the whole year. Theses fish do not respond well to all this disturbance. You should really look deep inside your conscience and ask yourself why you are doing this constant promotion. Is it for the fish/resource or for your ego. Just my take.Have a nice day.
Mike Witmer honest if looking to protect the Water you fish.. Maybe check with Voted Official and The Local DNR Agents. To change the regulation in that Stream. To help you protect the fish you are guarding . So Closely.. Maybe Mike is helping others enjoy fishing as We do in his Videos.. Just maybe the Video might help a Less fortunate angler... Handicap or a youngster get a fresh start. In Fly Fishing.. I think Pros outway the Cons.. In this Case.. Thanks for Sharing your Comment and Watching Wooly Bugged Channel..
Wooly Bugged sure thing Mike. I served in the Us Army. For 4yrs as a young man.. To help protect the Constitution.. We are Blessed to have the Freedoms we have in this Great Counrty.. He just excersing some of Freedom. We all should be proud to Have.. Keep up the Great WORK. Big Mike..
Mike, I started watching you 2.5. Years ago as I or epared to retire and get ready to learn fly fishing. Why did /do you use an indicator a lot? Thanks, Tony
Anthony, I personally just like fishing with an indicator. I find it easier to see with my eyes and I like watching it go down! There are certainly situations where other methods of nymphing may be more effective but I fish for enjoyment and therefore do it how I'd like to! Some times I'll tightline for fun.
Another great video Michael. Nice tribute to Lefty. I too learned some casting from his books and how to sharpen the points on those old Mustad hooks. The fire burned in him till the end, amazing man. Thanks Michael 👍 hope you have a happy blessed Easter.
Hey Mike.....another excellent presentation. You've got a gift for producing and narrating these videos. Perhaps, some day, you'll become the likes of Lefty Kreh. I like the way you network as you go about your activities. Anyway, we can all use the services of a competent dentist. :-D
You did well that day! I fished Falls that same day in the morning. It was really hard fishing with that Didymo for sure. I was removing it all morning. Wish I would have bumped into you. We have been fishing similar streams. I was a day after you on Morgan Run, and hours before you at Gunpowder. Great video as always and I look forward to the next!
That crazy, maybe one of these days we will bump into each other, haha. That Didymo is awful on the Gunpowder. That's one thing the barbless hooks make a lot easier!
Nice job...I want to fish this sometime. I have a video on my youtube channel of the day I had Josh take me and my son out. I started using his flies I believe last summer. I went out to Colorado with some and came back with the attitude of " In Josh I trust" I really have gotten hooked on the Euronymphing style of flyfishing. Ready for better spring weather in Western PA!
WildBlue Discovery thanks for the comment. Ya, I’d put my trust in Josh when it comes to fly patterns and technique! How’s your spring fishing been so far this year?
I got out March 24th on Slippery Rock Creek and made a video. About froze my fanny off. Did not get out Good Friday like I had planned. A good bit of rain before that day. I am hoping to get out this week sometime. Tight Lines!
James Presbury James, I typically fish floating indicators, but that just where I’m at in my journey. Tight line nymphing will catch more fish, I’m still learning that technique!
Thanks for the great video Mike. The white edges on the adipose fin is characteristic of rainbows that reproduce in streams. I wonder if the Browns, brooks and rainbows are all hybridizing. I really like wide, shallow streams like this. Makes reading the water that much more important. And you did a really good job of that.
I’ve caught brookies from Big Falls up to the Maesmore rd section so they are in there but like you said, pretty uncommon. I believe they tend to get eaten by the browns
poaching is a problem there. have personally seen a guy carrying fish away from the stream, and also evidence of bait gear along banks and in trees, which is illegal there. Maryland DNR won’t send anyone out even if you call in a report of illegal activity
Hi mike. Lovely tribute to lefty kreh from you, I was never able to meet or listen to the man in person but have watched his great video, s, helped me to master the double haul, have you changed your camera as the footage this week appeared more crisp and sharp, looked a great place to fish... take care and tight lines to you... R.
All your videos helped to counter my cabin fever I suffered most of this winter although I did get out to fish several times. I have a question about your placement of the Lighting Strike indicator (they are my preferred indicator also). It appears on the video that your indicator is set more than 2X the depth of some of the water you are fishing. What is your general guide and do you adjust the indicator position while you are fishing different depths?
wayneutube100 Wayne, thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. I use the old rule of thumb “approximately 1.5 Times the depth I want to fish.” After you do it enough, you instinctually can feel where it needs to be.
I’m just getting into fly fishing coming from spin/baitcast fishing, have any tips on what methods to use when fly fishing? I live in Maryland and fish the gunpowder a lot.
Peter H there are lots at each of the road crossings and trails following much of the stream from big falls on up to the upper (Falls rd) section. The upstream sections tend to get more hikers so the paths tend to be pretty clear. Further downstream where there’s fewer hikers, the paths tend to get overgrown

Mike, just watched your nymph rig video from Christmas to help me fish a dropper. Thanks for the content and the help. Tight lines!
Dane Szalwinski you bet Dane, tight lines this spring.

Awesome video Mike, you make it look easy as always. I really appreciated the shout out and I'm glad you caught em up!
John hey John, great to meet you and your friends! Hope your spring semester finished up well!

That river looks great, fish is very well coloured. Thanks for awesome trip 😁🍀✌
Fishing and Freediving in Ireland how’s the fishing in Ireland?
Another great video Michael. Nice tribute to Lefty. I too learned some casting from his books and how to sharpen the points on those old Mustad hooks. The fire burned in him till the end, amazing man. Thanks Michael 👍 hope you have a happy blessed Easter.
Joe, you have a blessed Easter too. They don't make them like Lefty anymore. Hope you get out to catch some fish soon!

Caudell Peduncle thanks for watching Caudell, your comment is very kind : )
Winter Fly Fishing was pretty decent.. This year. Got some decent fish..
Hope all is well with you..Mike..

Jig hooks make a world of difference as well.

Weather.....to much rain and a cold..spring creek was to far..so I ended up not going out good Friday....i sure hope conditions improve!!
Hi mike great video, do you prefer a lightning indicator/yarn indicator or a color line indicator
James Presbury James, I typically fish floating indicators, but that just where I’m at in my journey. Tight line nymphing will catch more fish, I’m still learning that technique!
Nice day on the water Mike!
jonathan fuddy thanks Jon! Been out at all?
Wooly Bugged yeah, been catching some on the Donegal. It's not quite as loaded as last year. At least not yet
Thanks Mike! Nice job as always; beautiful wild browns & rainbows.
Those rainbows probably aren't wild. DNR stocks rainbows as fingerlings above Falls Road. There may be some natural reproduction, but it's scarce.
Big Papi that’s a great question, what would you call that kind of trout?
It's not possible for them to hybridize...
Very cool as always Mike. Thanks for the shot of the Lefty plaque at the end.
Piscator Flies you bet Darren.
Really enjoy your videos. Kind of new to fly fishing( Not to trout fishin). Please continue to Teach us newbies.
Hillbilly Sportsman awesome, thanks Hillbilly! I’m glad you picked up the sport, I hope you never give it up!
can't wait till 5th to go on my fishing trip to never sink. that will be my fist time fly fishing, nice fishes Mike.
Awesome, let me know how you make out on the Neversink!
Mike, another great video! Those were some pretty fish. Might need to add the gunpowder to my list. Happy Easter
Gary B thanks Gary, Happy Easter to you too. You should at least make one visit to say you’ve been there!
Another great video , thanks
Rich Smidtke thanks Rich!
The only place I’ve ever caught brook trout is above pretty boy dam. Very uncommon but there is a few there
I’ve caught brookies from Big Falls up to the Maesmore rd section so they are in there but like you said, pretty uncommon. I believe they tend to get eaten by the browns
Fish size much smaller than in Lefty's heyday.
poaching is a problem there. have personally seen a guy carrying fish away from the stream, and also evidence of bait gear along banks and in trees, which is illegal there. Maryland DNR won’t send anyone out even if you call in a report of illegal activity
@@dsong401 I fish there regularly and have been checked 3 times ,maybe they recently stepped up their presence
Your so good with the fly names lol. Great video very informative.

Richard Isaac Rich, nope, no camera change but light can play a role in how the lenses adjust.
Nice video. Thanks for the insight on the flies!
Greg Mullenax you bet Greg! Josh Miller’s nymph was great.

I have caught a lot of fish on that same pattern. The fish love it.
Real nice.
I’m just getting into fly fishing coming from spin/baitcast fishing, have any tips on what methods to use when fly fishing? I live in Maryland and fish the gunpowder a lot.
Mike
How are the parking areas and are there decent walking trails along the river banks?
Peter H there are lots at each of the road crossings and trails following much of the stream from big falls on up to the upper (Falls rd) section. The upstream sections tend to get more hikers so the paths tend to be pretty clear. Further downstream where there’s fewer hikers, the paths tend to get overgrown
Good day of fishing
Todd H what’s up Todd!
Going to try Jersey today. On the P.
