- This is the second video in a series where Michael Evanko fly fishes for trout with vintage fly rods. In this video, Evanko searches for wild brook trout on a small tributary in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He uses a Fenwick FL72-6 fiberglass fly rod. This video was the first time Evanko ever fished the rod. He purchased this rod through an estate sale on eBay. It is believed this rod is a custom wrapped blank from the mid 60s or early 70s. To his knowledge, the factory did not wrap with the multi-colored wraps shown on the rod in the video. If anyone has info on this rod, please comment below.
The stream fished in this video is a 4-5 mile long tributary and was not fished or hiked by Evanko prior to this video. Evanko accessed this stream by hiking a quarter mile into Tioga State Forest and then hiking another 2.5 miles upstream. The water was 56-58 degrees at the time of filming. All brook trout in this video were caught on a #14 Lance Egan Corn Fed Caddis pattern.

I own 3 of these rods.
A FL72-5 and 2 FL72-6's
Mine range in length from 6' - 6'4".
2 of mine were built in the 60's /70's and one recently.
Lovely vintage rods that the blanks were sold to hobbiest rod builders in the early days. If you own one it is most surely a custom.
With proper guide spacing they will cast 3-5wt lines.
Enjoy the rod. It is a favorite of mine.

IMO the yellow has more feel or wiggle and I do like it the best. FWIW.

Great video and awsome sceanery. I can't give you any info rod but I had what I believe was the 5' model possibly a 3/4wt. that I used for Arctic Grayling and Whitefish while stationed in Fairbanks, Ak. Back in the mid 70s. Loved that rod but I no longer have it. After watching your video I think I'm going to try to locate one. When I was a lot younger I had one of the old white rods. I don't remember if it was a Fenwick or possibly a Eagle Claw. I used it to catch bass and bluegills on Lake Author. Thanks for reminding the memories.

Another fine video Mike. In response to your interest in the vintage fly rod, I think you are right on about the rod being a custom build and the rod length and line weight designation. The “FL” in the model number could stand for furle light. This was a Fenwick fiberglass model. I believe this might have been the older E glass blank. These rods were and remain fun rods to fish.
As for the handle restoration question. It is not a difficult task. However, if you want to take this on yourself, be aware that you will have an initial investment in parts, materials and tools, some of which you may already have. You will also want to do some searching on youtube on the topics of fly rod handle repair, how to build a fly rod handle, etc. There are many good videos on these topics. It could be interesting and fun. The quick and easy repair would be to remove the cork rings that are damaged and replace. The removal can be done with an exacto or razor knife, and razor blade, rat-tail file, sandpaper, and glue. You can do this without removing any guides, hook keeper, and winding check.
Alternatively, there is likely a rod builder near you, who would do a great job at a reasonable cost.
Please keep the great videos coming. BTW, I read a great article of yours on fly fishing for carp. It would make a great video.

I was on a overnight fishing/camping trip at the weekend, took in 4 small mountain lakes. Only caught 2 wild Brown Trout, I got soaked with some heavy downpours and there were 30km wind gusts, but it was awesome.

You can repair the cork with Elmer’s E861 Carpenters wood filler in Golden Oak color. I just used this to repair a vintage bamboo rod handle that was mouse chewn and looked very similar to your handle. People that I’ve showed it to could not even tell it was repaired until I pointed it out. I built the chewed edges up in thin layers until it was high enough and the contoured it with 400 grit sandpaper. Love your videos. I have never caught a native. It’s on my wish list.

Wooly Bugged I’m afraid I do not know. There may be if you search for it. I’ve built many from scratch and refurbished several rods though and this is the best method I’ve found for patching and repairing cork. You can buy it from several rod building supply companies in the repair section but it’s a lot cheaper to pick it up off amazon or at a local hardware place. If I had a way to do it I would send you pics of this last rod before and after. It was in worse shape than what you have there. Also a tip for cleaning, a magic eraser will clean that cork to like new condition without removing any of it. Unlike sandpaper or an abrasive.

Mike, you are correct the 72 denotes the inches of the rod and the 6 indicates the line weight the rod was designed. Probably fish fine with a 5 weight. Fenwick sold the yellow rod blanks, so you rod would have been built by someone who bought the blank. Other indication are the multicoloured guide wraps, factory Fenwicks have the signature brown wraps bordered in white. Check out the Fiberglass Flyfishers website for info on Fenwicks and other classic fiberglass rods.
Great video as always! I have one of the Simms bug stopper hoodies and really like it as a sun shirt and fishing hoody. The bug stopper seems to work pretty well, but the mosquitoes still seem to find my face. I was on the Yellow Breeches two days ago and they were really bad there as well. I actually cut my trip short because of them (was wearing a rain jacket not the simms hoody).

I remember fishing huge dry flies for eastern brookies in comparison to the size of the fish. It seems they were opportunistic and preferred large terrestrials in the spring and summer especially. The nymphs on the rock you overturned looked to be #20-22? It would have been interesting to see if they would have hit a dry/dropper setup. You could have floated the Titanic with that CDC caddis! Great video Mike and a beautiful stretch of water!

Nice video Mike. Beautiful stream. Rod is very cool, cork is really not in bad shape, would be a shame to replace it and the seat and remove all it's character. Clean it up with the magic eraser, or a sponge with soap and warm water. Fill in the voids with one of the methods mentioned earlier and enjoy. I was watching that auction, you should use the reel that came with it. I'll bet it fishes better with a heavy DT4 or true to weight DT5 line. Old glass and bamboo typically fishes better with a line weight or two smaller when using modern line.

Hillbilly Sportsman I’m starting to really enjoy the short glass rods. That leader was one I custom tied. I make it just long enough to keep the fly line out of the last guide. But ultimately it came down to 5X.
Hello WB, Mike in Ct here. That old glass rod is nifty. If it is done w varnish & not epoxy it won't be too horrible to do a tear down & re-build. That said if the guides & stuff r tight & smooth just repair the cork handle using saw dust & cork dust in the voids. I started repairing & re-building vintage tackle in the late 70's. Fenwick made a 6'3" Graphite 4 wt in the 80's . Trust me if you want a small stream fly rod that that really handles. that one discontinued Fenwick, was my Fav. Fenwick of all time. It was sold to a man who's condo burned down. I've been looking for that rod / blank now that I'm retired. I would like to show you some examples of my work. mike in ct . Can you text me ?

Wish I could go for some this Saturday lmao but no one is free 😭😭😂😂 contacted each one of my friends and they all said they were busy, don’t like to go to the middle of nowhere alone. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, particularly the small-stream ones for brook trout. I'm in Louisiana, but a number of years ago I became addicted to small-stream fly fishing in the mountains (probably because of the novelty of elevated terrain). We primarily fish the Smokies in Tennessee and North Carolina, because it isn't too far of a drive - very similar streams, but your northern-strain brookies tend to be a bit bigger than the Southern Appalachian specs we catch; we might have to try Pennsylvania some time. My latest fixation is Tenkara - have you tried it? It's perfect for small streams, and it's very handy to collapse it and hike through some thick brush to get to where you need to go.
You need to get yourself a Therma Cell to keep mosquitos away they do work well I have used them Sika Deer hunting on Maryland Easternshore around marshes and they keep them off there it should work well there.

I love all your videos, but why do you have such a large net?
J Wayno the primary reason I use that net is because of the long handle. It secures well in the new packs that have net holsters. Short handle nets fall out easily. The long handle also makes it easy to reach out and grab fish from the bank. I haven’t found a long handled net with a small hoop and small basket holes. If you have any suggested nets that offer that I’m all ears!
Ah that makes sense to me. It looks very awkward to carry especially in those tight areas you fish most. And I do not have any net suggestions other than to either make your own or add to the handle I used a piece of pvc pipe on mine it’s still super light and small but has a long handle

Your best bet is to go on the fish commission website and look up the trout map for Potter, Tioga and Lycoming counties, it will show you many creeks that hold fish, and start exploring. The research and exploring are part of the fun! Good luck!👍
