I've been saying the same thing to everyone that approaches me on the subject. While Duolingo does offer Portuguese, it is not EUROPEAN Portuguese and would ultimately stunt your growth if that is what you are aiming for. Memrise and Drops however, do offer European Portuguese with Memrise being substantially more structured and Drops being more or less a flashcard app. PS. You look amazing and my affection towards you is always more than yesterday and less than tomorrow. Thank you for everything, especially your passion for what you do.
Duolingo personally has been working for me to learn vocabulary and reading/writing sentences, What I do is ignore their word pronunciation and seek online the differences between the two like for example Cachorro(BR) - Cao(PT) for dog. For pronunciation I use european portuguese teachers on youtube like yourself instead of Duolingo.

Yes, at the beginning you can use it as a reference but you should still pay attention to the vocabulary that sometimes is completely different and the sentence structure 😊 I would really advise you to read the blog post I wrote about it. Eu gosto de elementos da cultura brasileira mas prefiro o português europeu, a língua de Camões, falo outras línguas latinas e prefiro usar tu e nós e adoro a pronunciação portuguesa. I used Duolingo at first. If you start from zero its a good tool to enhance your vocabulary imo. I didn't realize at the time there was a difference between Brazilian and Continental Portuguese (found out later when girls in Portugal give you strange looks when you give your number as "nil seis" in stead of "zero seis"). I stopped using it after I realized I could actually watch a complete movie with the sound muted just by reading the subtitles (major victory for me). A few months ago I read my first 700+ pages book in Portuguese (again major victory). Now I'm focusing on understanding spoken Portuguese. Seriously, how "Voce esta bem?" becomes something like "ta bai?" is just crazy. I watch your videos to better understand spoken Portuguese and ofc Amor Amor every night :)
I’ve learned a lot of Portuguese using Dualingo and I like it a lot, especially the stories. It’s a motivating app. I learned it was not European Portuguese recently. 🤦🏻♀️ It so annoying that they don’t have EU Portuguese on there. I found I enjoyed using it much more then Babbel.
Yes, it can be nice, but the problem is really this: it’s not European Portuguese. But you learnt some Portuguese, so that’s ok. You can start learning European Portuguese form other sources now 😊

We were practicing our Portuguese using Duolingo and his sister laughed when we showed her what we had been doing. It was then that we realized that we were not learning the correct Portuguese. This video was very helpful. I'm American and just finished the Duolingo Brazilian Portuguese course and only realized toward the end of the course how different the accent and some of the grammar is with European Portuguese. We have more opportunities to speak with Brazilians in the US especially here in Florida, but actually I plan to spend more time in Portugal and Europe so now I realize that I need to switch. It's interesting that Castilian Spanish and the accent in Spain is fairly similar to that of Spanish in Latin America. I don't find it difficult to understand and speak Spanish in either Spain or Latin America. Not so with Portuguese. The European and Brazilian variants are notably different. Having completed the Duolingo Portuguese course is both a help and a hindrance. It helped me get the vocabulary and basic ability to speak and understand Portuguese but now it will be challenging to learn the European accent after so much time drilling with the Brazilian variant. Well it will be fun. I wonder if it is possible to be able to know and understand both variants. Like so many British and Australian actors learn to speak with a perfect American accent for roles and vice versa.

It is so hard to convince beginners that Dualingo will not really help them with European Portuguese and will most likely confuse them to the point they will become frustrated with learning the language.
I am French and unfortunately memrise doesn't offer Portuguese courses in French. My current solution is to use Duolingo to learn Brazilian Portuguese but also Drops for European Portuguese. I also read and watch European Portuguese lessons. Duolingo has the advantage of accepting most European vocabulary and even some of its grammar, so when I can I use it. It's frustrating that they made French - Brazilian Portuguese lessons, French and European Portuguese have more similar grammar and vocabulary it would have been easier, I hope they add European Portuguese one day.

from China--- I've learned Brazilian Portuguese for about one month,and I also use duolingo it's good in some ways but sometimes the grammar rules are not explained in detail and when you do the translation exercise on that app,it's really rigid.but most time it's ok I think

Duolingo is the worst generally. And worst still, Duolingo refuses to offer European Portuguese. But it offers Klingon, High Valyarian, and Esperanto... Go figure.
I'm Portuguese and live in a English speaking country. In updating some foreign (for me) languages such as German and French I found Duolingo quite rigid and sometimes even "square"!
I have been trying to learn European Portuguese for several years on and off but really want to get to grips with it now. We have a home in Algarve but live in England and are now retired so want to spend more time in Algarve. I would like help learning and feel this is a good platform I’ve looked at Duolingo but felt it was Brazilian so I’m not surprised to hear you say this. Starting one month ago, I was aware that Duolingo teaches Brazilian Portuguese since it shows a Brazilian flag. I actually would like to learn both variations at some point ... Being French, some parts of European Portuguese prononciation seem a bit more natural to me (even though sometimes voyels are a bit overly eaten even for me). But at the same time, Brazilian vocabulary is a bit more needed for me since I often meet Brazilians speaking Portuguese, and I am a bit more likely to visit Brazil shortly (also, to be honest,from my experience there are many people who speak either French or English in Portugal, so if I'm missing a word I can still get people to understand me there). I ended up thinking that, the same way I don't truly speak US English or UK English (nor from any other country), I will probably just speak a kind of mixed Portuguese, trying to be comfortable with both variations (in terms of understanding pronounciation at least). So far, Duolingo helps me quite a bit at gaining vocabulary (even if some of it only applies to Brazilian variation), grammar, conjugaison, and overall at feeling more familiar with the language. I like their system, it is quite "fun" (sometimes repetitions get a bit annoying but I think it's ok). I still welcome the help of RUclips, and maybe soon your other content, to keep a touch with European Portuguese. I will also check those other apps you mentionned, thank you.

I have been attempting to learn European Português. At first through your Good Morning Portugal apoearances and some of your RUclips videos. I have used Pimsleur audio (only) CD's. I have used Pimsleur conversational course lessons 1-16. I need a visual (spelling) component. Also, Pimsleur seems to teach higher academic Português and not the common language of the shops and streets. Good for Coimbra, nâo? The best balance I have found is Duolingo. I now understand the shortcomings of their program. I understand the cultural and language differences caused by 400 years of separation. It is like me reading Benjamin Franklin's publications or reading William Shakespeare's plays. Oi! I am recently retired in Illinois living very close to the Upper Mississippi River and consequently, Iowa, USA. I grew up with Amercan English only. We changed our region when I was in elementary school. So same language but different words and meanings. In secondary school I was taught French for 2 years, at my request. I was considered to be an average student 47 years ago. I want to learn in order to visit PT for two weeks at a time. Thanks for your attention! Tchau.

USA- I just started my Portuguese language journey this week. I started seeing videos pop up about the difference between Brazilian and European Portuguese. I thought it would be minor, but it sounds a lot different! I'm not good with languages to begin with, so I really don't want to confuse my brain even more. Nunca usei 'apps de alta tecnologia' para aprender português, e estou a aprender as variantes portuguesas, as regiões culturais carioca e paulista. Acredito simplesmente ao ouvir os falantes de português nativos no seu cenário no mundo real de conversas diárias em pequenos vídeos no RUclips, ou em qualquer podcast. Também lendo pequenos livros de início simples progressivamente para construir vocabulário e ver como a boa gramática é construída. Também ouço muitos jornalistas todos os dias e copio a forma como falam, a pronúncia das palavras.

I wanted to learn European Portuguese but 95% of the material online is Brazilian. So I had to go with Brazilian. Brazilian is a bit easier for non-native speakers because they pronounce the words more clearly than the Europeans.

If you are learning to go live in Portugal how will that help you? You are just learning bad habits that will take longer to rectify later. If you aren't going to live in Portugal. Keep on learning what you are learning now.
I did Duolingo for Portuguese in the beginning. But it was so weird learning from it. It was not what was hearing outside. I got so repelled by it that I stopped using it.

Do you offer online B2 course? For Portuguese, I prefer proper course rather than Duolingo, because it is Brazilian. But for German, which I have been learning on Duolingo for over a year , I really like Duolingo.

This comment is exactly why a person should NOT learn Brazilian Portuguese if they want to live in Portugal. If a native Portuguese speaker from Brazil can't understand European Portuguese how would you after learning it?

But the familiarity which I have mentioned is about the way of talk, the ways of using words, the sensations that it causes me. USA - I've been studying Brazilian Portuguese on Duolingo for about a year and am doing very well with it. I know that Duo offers Brazilian and not Continental (European), but didn't know where else to turn. Then, this summer I visited Portugal for 17 days and not only LOVED the country and people, but was surprised to see that--after a couple of days hearing the differences between what I was learning from Duo and what I was hearing spoken in Portugal--I could indeed understand and speak some Continental Portuguese. My experiences in Portugal were very motivating for me to continue learning Portuguese, but I now want to focus more on Continental and not Brazilian so am very glad to see this video and plan to start looking at the resources you have shared. One interesting note from my time in Portugal: Many Portuguese people encouraged me to keep learning Brazililan Portuguese, which I found to be surprising and odd, especially considering how different the two variants are. They said that Brazilian is easier to understand and speak, and that they can understand it so that is probably the best way forward. However, others told me that Portuguese people often can't understand Brazilians at all, and I agree that the two variants are significantly different and can see how it would be hard for people in Portugal to understand the Brazilians. So, I think I will just study both and see which one becomes most comfortable for me. I have a feeling, however, that since I speak Spanish very well--and understand the Madrid accent well--that Continental Portuguese will come easiest. We'll see! Thanks for this video!

I am interested in both variants, I think it is limiting to learn just one. Would it be okay to learn Brazilian Portuguese on Duolingo and then listen to European Portuguese a lot to identify the differences? Have you ever tried Duolingo? What's the % of things you would say differently in Portugal? Can you give examples of the most obvious words? Obrigado!
Olá :) If you are interested in both variants, you could try that strategy and check how it works for you. I have tried Duolingo, the differences are not immense in terms of vocabulary, but they do exist. It is hard for me to make a list now of all the words that are different in both languages. Duo is fine if you are interested in general but if you are going to learn the language to live in Portugal why would you mix your own accent on top of another foreign accent? The Brazilian Portuguese is a foreign accent in Portugal with many variations of verbs and words not used in Portugal. That's like learning English spoken in Jamaica to live in England.

Drops is super annoying. The timer and the fact they mostly make you learn seperate words, not phrases are killing me. The only reason I downloaded it was the European version of Portuguese, but I couldn't use it long enough to actually learn anything because I hated it pretty much right away 😑

O Duolingo não é um bom método para aprender línguas, as frases não se aplicam na vida real e é muito repetitivo. Trinta vezes repetem coisas como "A maçã é vermelha", o que está bem uma vez para se ver que o substantivo e o adjectivo concordam no género e número. De resto, não gosto.
I agree, I started with Duolingo until I realized it was Brazilian Portuguese! Quite different! Memrise is great for Euro Portuguese.

"A gente" também é usado em Portugal, não apenas no Brasil. "Nós" também é usado no Brasil, não apenas em Portugal.

As a Brazilian I've never heard the word "Nil". We say "Zero" just like the portuguese.

I ended up thinking that, the same way I don't truly speak US English or UK English (nor from any other country), I will probably just speak a kind of mixed Portuguese, trying to be comfortable with both variations (in terms of understanding pronounciation at least). So far, Duolingo helps me quite a bit at gaining vocabulary (even if some of it only applies to Brazilian variation), grammar, conjugaison, and overall at feeling more familiar with the language. I like their system, it is quite "fun" (sometimes repetitions get a bit annoying but I think it's ok). I still welcome the help of RUclips, and maybe soon your other content, to keep a touch with European Portuguese. I will also check those other apps you mentionned, thank you.

I have been attempting to learn European Português. At first through your Good Morning Portugal apoearances and some of your RUclips videos. I have used Pimsleur audio (only) CD's. I have used Pimsleur conversational course lessons 1-16. I need a visual (spelling) component. Also, Pimsleur seems to teach higher academic Português and not the common language of the shops and streets. Good for Coimbra, nâo? The best balance I have found is Duolingo. I now understand the shortcomings of their program. I understand the cultural and language differences caused by 400 years of separation. It is like me reading Benjamin Franklin's publications or reading William Shakespeare's plays. Oi!
I am recently retired in Illinois living very close to the Upper Mississippi River and consequently, Iowa, USA.
I grew up with Amercan English only. We changed our region when I was in elementary school. So same language but different words and meanings. In secondary school I was taught French for 2 years, at my request. I was considered to be an average student 47 years ago. I want to learn in order to visit PT for two weeks at a time.

Yes, I understand that sometimes it’s difficult to find the right resources to learn European Portuguese, and Duolingo is definitely not the best resource because it’s in Brazilian Portuguese. I would like to ask you if you checked my online courses? They’re all in European Portuguese and I put a lot of emphasis in pronunciation 😊 maybe something for you? USA- I just started my Portuguese language journey this week. I started seeing videos pop up about the difference between Brazilian and European Portuguese. I thought it would be minor, but it sounds a lot different! I'm not good with languages to begin with, so I really don't want to confuse my brain even more.

Nunca usei 'apps de alta tecnologia' para aprender português, e estou a aprender as variantes portuguesas, as regiões culturais carioca e paulista. Acredito simplesmente ao ouvir os falantes de português nativos no seu cenário no mundo real de conversas diárias em pequenos vídeos no RUclips, ou em qualquer podcast. Também lendo pequenos livros de início simples progressivamente para construir vocabulário e ver como a boa gramática é construída. Também ouço muitos jornalistas todos os dias e copio a forma como falam, a pronúncia das palavras.

Memrise is good. But Drops is really really slow and the little line drawings aren't realistic - you could do better with just some Anki flashcards.

I used duolingo, babbel and qlango. You can choose european portuguese on qlango. Babbel has brasillian only.

I didn’t realise Babbel was Brazilian Portuguese as well🤦🏻♀️. I know the flags now, it won’t happen again. Soooo disappointing that these apps don’t cater to EU Portuguese.

I wanted to learn European Portuguese but 95% of the material online is Brazilian. So I had to go with Brazilian. Brazilian is a bit easier for non-native speakers because they pronounce the words more clearly than the Europeans.

If you are learning to go live in Portugal how will that help you? You are just learning bad habits that will take longer to rectify later. If you aren't going to live in Portugal. Keep on learning what you are learning now.
I did Duolingo for Portuguese in the beginning. But it was so weird learning from it. It was not what was hearing outside. I got so repelled by it that I stopped using it.

@@MiaEsmerizAcademy Thank you! I actually did A1, A2, and B1 courses at Universidade de Aveiro. I started B2, then the pandemic hit, I had to stop. Sadly, now I am not living in Portugal. Do you offer online B2 course? For Portuguese, I prefer proper course rather than Duolingo, because it is Brazilian. But for German, which I have been learning on Duolingo for over a year , I really like Duolingo.

This comment is exactly why a person should NOT learn Brazilian Portuguese if they want to live in Portugal. If a native Portuguese speaker from Brazil can't understand European Portuguese how would you after learning it?

But the familiarity which I have mentioned is about the way of talk, the ways of using words, the sensations that it causes me. USA - I've been studying Brazilian Portuguese on Duolingo for about a year and am doing very well with it. I know that Duo offers Brazilian and not Continental (European), but didn't know where else to turn. Then, this summer I visited Portugal for 17 days and not only LOVED the country and people, but was surprised to see that--after a couple of days hearing the differences between what I was learning from Duo and what I was hearing spoken in Portugal--I could indeed understand and speak some Continental Portuguese. My experiences in Portugal were very motivating for me to continue learning Portuguese, but I now want to focus more on Continental and not Brazilian so am very glad to see this video and plan to start looking at the resources you have shared. One interesting note from my time in Portugal: Many Portuguese people encouraged me to keep learning Brazililan Portuguese, which I found to be surprising and odd, especially considering how different the two variants are. They said that Brazilian is easier to understand and speak, and that they can understand it so that is probably the best way forward. However, others told me that Portuguese people often can't understand Brazilians at all, and I agree that the two variants are significantly different and can see how it would be hard for people in Portugal to understand the Brazilians. So, I think I will just study both and see which one becomes most comfortable for me. I have a feeling, however, that since I speak Spanish very well--and understand the Madrid accent well--that Continental Portuguese will come easiest. We'll see! Thanks for this video!

I am interested in both variants, I think it is limiting to learn just one. Would it be okay to learn Brazilian Portuguese on Duolingo and then listen to European Portuguese a lot to identify the differences?
Have you ever tried Duolingo? What's the % of things you would say differently in Portugal? Can you give examples of the most obvious words? Obrigado!
Olá :) If you are interested in both variants, you could try that strategy and check how it works for you. I have tried Duolingo, the differences are not immense in terms of vocabulary, but they do exist. It is hard for me to make a list now of all the words that are different in both languages. You have trem vs comboio (train); contabilista vs contador; cave vs porão; fato de banho vs roupa de banho; banheiro vs quarto/casa de banho; and many more...also, some grammar constructions are also differently - like the question order, for example ;)

Duo is fine if you are interested in general but if you are going to learn the language to live in Portugal why would you mix your own accent on top of another foreign accent? The Brazilian Portuguese is a foreign accent in Portugal with many variations of verbs and words not used in Portugal. That's like learning English spoken in Jamaica to live in England.

Drops is super annoying. The timer and the fact they mostly make you learn seperate words, not phrases are killing me. The only reason I downloaded it was the European version of Portuguese, but I couldn't use it long enough to actually learn anything because I hated it pretty much right away 😑
the 5 minute limit for free version is a deal breaker for me

O Duolingo não é um bom método para aprender línguas, as frases não se aplicam na vida real e é muito repetitivo. Trinta vezes repetem coisas como "A maçã é vermelha", o que está bem uma vez para se ver que o substantivo e o adjectivo concordam no género e número. De resto, não gosto.
