*coughs in never practices realism because i'm a sucker for drawing cute cartoon girls*
I do some realism. Mostly just my ocs and me as a cute anime girl though
Dont cough
Sameee
Ok so just a helpful tip for artists out there:
If you do realism now, it will really help with proportions and anatomy studies in the future. Even if your an illustrator, this will help you big time, trust me. All art styles come from realism :)
omg hi Hershey!!
@@chaotic_andromeda hullo!
Exactly!
Me: Oh! Oliver’s video! Nice.
Video: Learn realism even tho you’re an illustrator.
Me, a lazy cartoonist:... oh shi-
Thankfully for me l started out with realism at a very young age, then l started doing cartoons, so l don't really have to do this :)
@@hadyyy2619 XD from kindergarten to second grade i drew animals in second grade i decided to take the leap and draw anime XD because I've been watching anime since i was 6 i know how to draw anime better Lol. So i don't think i need to either
@@justsomegirlwithluck2483 Lol thats funny cause i never went through the anime stage cause i never watched it (other than pokemon) i just have been drawing realism from like 5 to 11, then i started developing my style
@@hadyyy2619 Yeah same just with anime style lol
@@justsomegirlwithluck2483 yea we the lucky ones
Oliver: “The heels of a cat are actually up in the air so they are able to sneak up on things!”
Me: So is this why they say to tippy-toe?!?! **the realization** 😱
Oliver: "Choose on thing you want to get better at with drawing"
Me: starting.
*don't mix eggs, i'm sad*
My yearbook quote right here
Me: watched this video
Also me: *realizes I have a huge pinterest board with tons of realistic references I haven't touched in months* 👀

Yes references are really really useful. I have been using them recently and they made my drawing look a lot better.
Also beautiful painting!💕
This is actually a helpful video,
I used to be really against using references because I followed bad advice but this’ll help those who are struggling!
Also cat! I like your cute painting and other pet paintings too haha.
The last time I was this early Connor Murphy was still alive
(Only DEH fans will understand dis)
We have been blessed by Mr, Art God himself with such great art!
Hi oliver!
In your words the best abvice is can give is too practice✨✨
Thanks for the tips! I know I need to get better at environments and all I draw is cartoons
ThanQ for answering my question I asked on the 100 heads challenge. And also im doing that challenge now im even more better at drawing realistic heads. U have always been my inspiration. Thank you sooo much for making it a video.. 🥰🥰
“I know what a cat looks like” -honestly that’s really how it goes. You draw it and then you look at the actual cat and you’re like woah there’s so many things I missed and got wrong. References really are your best friend, learn to draw what you see and not what you think you see.
I was bored once but wanted to draw so I used a picture of my dog as a reference and accidentally did it in more of a realism style instead of my style and it came out really well. It definitely showed me that realism can help anyone improve their art
I don’t know if this will help anyone but I get bored drawing realism so what I do is draw semi realism so I’m still studying it but I’m doing what I love. Then when I want to do more realistic stuff I have a place to start and I tend to have less of a struggle because I have a place of reference in my head. Hope that helps!!
I feel intimidated by the idea of trying to draw a realistic face after sooooo many years of drawing anime characters with those manga proportions (huge eyes, small nose, inexistent lips, you know the deal). So that's what I plan to start with, too, semi-realism. I hope it will be more fun and less intimidating for me!
@@andysartz Oh! I hope it helps. I totally get it I had the same issue I started out drawing from those awful anime books from the 2000s. Semi-realism in my experience helps because you can dip into both sides of the spectrum (realistic, or illustrative).
ahh i think this is your best animal painting yet!
yeah! studying realism is still important beyond helping you with proportion (no matter how exaggerated) it also helps you with figuring out where would be a general place to, place things and change and translate it from one style to another and keep them noticeably that character beyond say, their color pallet and hair style or something.
Wow this really helps!!!!:)
i can one hundred percent testify to this!! once i was joking with friends about how awful our old styles were, and i tried to demonstrate how bad it was, but it was actually difficult to make it look the way it was. not to say i’m a superb artist,, but after studying more realism the style look at lot nicer. i would totally recommend giving it a try
Hey art dad, i love your vids!!! Also I love the music that you picked. It really takes me back to the pre-corona times.
I'm so sorry, I said I wanna gonna wait but this popped up on my recommendations and it was your cat and I love all your animals so much and your art advice and just
C a t ;;-;;
After taking a long hiatus from art and coming back it's nice to see how far you've come, your videos really deserve the attention.
studying realism is so important, even if that is not what you want to do artistically. the best example of this is picasso, painted realistically and then was able to develop his most famous style because he knew how to contort the human form from studying it realistically
Things like these make me glad I draw realism and semi-realism lol
Lily may not appreciate your art, but I do. You are APPRECIATED!!! Great advice, btw, I am definitely going to take it!
I did only realism in graphite (using photo references) as a teenager and in my early twenties, and basically only drew horses. I completely stopped drawing for, hmm, I think it must be 10 years? There about. I am 30+ right now. Never dabbled in colors, so I dunno shit about color theory. Never dabbled in any other medium than graphite. Never studied perspective (I so wish I had, haha).
So when I decided to pick up art again? After thinking about it for years, I decided that this time around there would be no comfort zone. I SHALL LEARN IT ALL. Broaden my horizon and actively challenge myself (while having some fun too ofc).
I'm currently in an all out craze for markers and illustration :) I am so dreading moving into drawing people and landscapes, oh God. I feel scared to death even thinking about it, lol.
I honestly feel totally and utterly lost in everything I do (haven't touched graphite again, or rather, yet) but let me tell you guys something? Oliver is speaking the truth. Even if I only drew horses back in the days, I am still having such a huge advantage at my table, because of the realism, and from using photo references. I know how to do that, and it helps loads. It makes it so much easier (it still ain't a walk in the park tho) taking on learning a new subject matter.
Nobody:
Oliver: *architexture*
Oliver: its very rare for a person to just put a pen on paper and start drawing...
Huta Chan: oh really....
Oooh the cat turned out sooo cute*_*
How did I come from watching Michael Reeves to watching you? Either way it's a win/win.
I'm early and I love the painting. It turned out great and this helped me out a bit with my drawings.
Hi I hope you are having a good day
i'm curious on how many pets he has
He has 1 dog and 3 cats :)
Hey Oliver!! Today is my 18th birthday so I'm back to your channel!!!
I felt hopeless until I saw your video.
Thank you for making my day
A lot of videos tell me that drawing from reference is about starting with the basic shapes 😩 but I’m till confused how I turn a crooked circle into a masterpiece
My sister just got two kittens and they’re perfect and. Cat. I never liked cats. I’ve always been a bird person. And yet I’ve gone to see her like twice in the past week just to see Theodore and Banjo (the kittens)
I’m a bird person too!!
Thanks for this video Oliver!!
Nice
can u do other ig help me make a oc video plese
I can’t remember if you said this but what canvas and paint brushes do you use. I’m trying to get some stuff for Christmas. Or if you have any tips on what to get.
Love the new catchphrase, its lovely
I think the the only reason I’m not doing realism is because it was shoved down my throat as a kid. Don’t get me wrong, I do use realistic references for anatomy but that’s it. It was so forced on me in all of my classes that I began to resent it. I’m trying to learn it today, but it’s hard because of how many times I was lectured about it.
Yay! thx oliver with your upload😁
I'm knew it! Snail's House!
Your kitty is so cute :0 ✨✨✨
Hello i have a small question, so yknow the shapes under the body sketch...i dont quite get how those.....not sure if your the right person to ask about it but how do the shapes under the body sketch really help
I’m not a great artist or anything but it helps make things proportionate and the right size and shape. It also just kind of blocks out the body and makes it easier to build upon. For me it makes it easier to see if my character makes sense and is the right size, hope this helped!
and maybe put mikey and jax on the cover of your next sketchbook plese
I THOUGHT THE TITLE SAID RACISM- AND I WAS LIKE "How does racism help art???"
then I read it again
Cute phone :3 what phone is it ???
Art dad can you adopt me so I don't have to deal no my dad
ok but why does oliver pronounce architecture as "arc-i-texture" lmao as an architecture major I am extremely offended
H-
How else do you pronounce it?
I- what? How do you say it-
@@OliversAntics69 like arc-i-tec-tchure ? idk but you know the sound that's like t except with a sort of ch sound? maybe new yorkers pronounce architecture with an x sound but I'm from New Jersey and I've never heard anyone say it like that lol
Hi Oliver! I was wondering where you're going to post you're webtoon when you get to that stage?
M3 who draws cut3 sparkly poni3s: oh-
Cheese
My advice: don't use selfies as reference. The selfie lense distorts the hell out of people's features
The only references I use are of anime characters 🥲
Not good! Anime characters are simplified versions of real people, so you’ll never know how to draw people CORRECTLY if you do just anime. You must learn the rules before you break them.
bathtubs are reversed boats
*laughs in cartoon*
No (I really don't like realism)
