I feel so lucky that my school gets off at 1 on Wednesday's so I have an hour before Oliver posts. I'm not getting grounded tonight! And for you weirdos... Water flavored Ice-cream
I would only recommend tracing if you are practicing stable lines or just doing a random project that you aren’t going to use for a contest or post online. I have traced for a few art projects for my art class in 5th or 6th grade. These projects were specifically deconstruction projects, where it is easiest to trace the exact shape and deconstruct the shapes of the traced image.
I don't see the issue if you trace hands, and what you need, rework it, etc. I can trace as much as I want, for as long it's in parts. Some things like backgrounds take forever. etc. I hate how these "Art rules" keep cropping up. Just. Don't. trace. fanartists. No issue with official sketches etc in parts. Geee
@@repeekyraidcero I see your point, and I think we are on the same page. Tracing is not okay in situations where you are literally tracing over somebody’s entire piece and claiming it as your own. If it helps you learn and break down shapes, do it.

The only thing I "trace" are poses. But what I do is basically draw guidelines so I can figure out how to do certain poses. Although I cant really give credit cause I never know who drew it, gotta love Google and Pinterest right
I agree! and I think the only time tracing helps is if you are "redlining" it or going over it to find the simple shapes. you would do this before copying an image so that it makes more sense if you're more inexperienced.
I like your ideas on copy and reference for me I believe as long as you're not flat out stealing someone's artwork then using reference or copying is okay copying and using the reference helps people grow as artist and copying things like an atomy might really help someone 😋

I honestly learned art from watching speedpaints all. the. time. when i was younger and over the years I kinda just grasped onto how to do it because I watched others do it for years and years. Of course, I've used references, I still use references, but I mostly just learned from watching others lol
focusing on 2 or 3 photos of the same pose is better than using one! it helps vary the pose and you don’t end up directly copying from a single picture
Tracing is a really really good to learn proportions for beginners and as long as it is disclosed, or not shared, it isn't shameful to do so. I still do it at times to experiment with specific styles, but I keep that to myself. Usually I use references for specific poses, especially with hands and arms

I don't copy or trace others art,but when I try to draw something like a mermaid,I see that a lot of people like to make seashell bras and if i try to do a view I'll look at multiple artists to see how they do it and I'll use it as a reference and put my own spin on things as well as use photos of real people to do poses and stuff....is that a bad thing??? I post my art on instagram so I don't know....
That's called "costume/fashion design". Costume designers use historical (or contemporary) clothing from multiple sources to use as reference for a original, yet historically (or genre) appropriate design, similarly to how you'd look at a bike to know how it's shaped, etc. Fashion designers, however, will use said references to create something original, like taking the shape from mermaid bra A, the colour from bra B and the embellishments of bras C and D.
Also I feel like it depends on what your tracing/copying/referencing. With other artists work I wouldn't really recommend those. But if you intend on doing a painting that is supposed to have good proportions I believe it's totally okay to trace it from a photograph, as long as you put your own spin on it by colouring (so if the pose itself isn't the focal point, but the creative colouring is)

So if I mostly copy an image so it's very realistic, but I add my own things, like a different hairstyle, am accessory, a background, etc. is that ok? I usually don't copy images for realism but sometimes I do to practice. By copy I mean I look at mostly one reference and recreate it with some style changes and new features
Hey Oliver, it's a much more figured out artist!!! You handled this discussion super well (in my opinion) and after following you for what...3 years now I can't believe your improvement! If you get like a picture of like a outfit and a person you draw the same outfit and the person and mostly all this details but in your style do you consider that copying
An app I recommend, if you can't afford/don't want to get a body figure. Is Easy Pose. It's available for free on Android, and maybe Apple (there's also a paid early access version on Steam, but I never used it, so I can't exactly recommend it) There is a Pro upgrade, that you do have to pay for. But it's one time, and... Maybe under $10 (CAD) They have different sized male and female models, and a bunch of preset poses that you can use. You can make your own poses, but I recommend starting with the presets. And maybe adjusting it, if things seem off You can rotate the camera, pretty much anywhere you want, letting you get (almost) any angle you want The creators, do have another app, called "Easy Style". But I don't really recommend it
People are stupid I know some artists are claiming referencing can be as bad as tracing and that one should only use free stock images to reference... hell no I understand if one is replicating an image directly, but if they are just using multiple images to create something completely new that sounds like fair use conditions covers that. Overall you are right there are times and places to use refs.

Looking forward to the video
