Deadliest Roads - Peru: • Video
In Peru, David is leaving for the Amazon to gather wood to make a living for his family. But along the steep and dilapidated road, he is caught in the climactic phenomenon born from global warming, which they call “El Ninio” causing torrential rain and landslides and putting David’s life in immense danger.
The jungle that he travels to is the last area in the world where the incredible biodiversity remains intact. But industrialists are in search of gas, polluting as they go, and the poor inhabitants, like David are deforesting entire territories for them. In front of their eyes, the Amazon that they love so much is rapidly being destroyed and they themselves are forced to participate in its massacre in order to survive.
At the end of his route, the Masho Piro, the last indigenous people isolated from the rest of the world. The Masho Piro are threatened with extinction. Each year the Peruvian jungle loses 145,000 hectares of its lush green forest, the equivalent of 14 times the surface area of Paris!

One can’t possibly describe or summarize the richness of a culture or country in a single documentary. Our objective on Free Documentary is to give you a feel, an overview. And maybe inspire some of you to delve deeper into the culture, geography, literature, music, cuisine, or the language. Because any single aspect provides insight and a deeper understanding of customs and cultures different from ours.
    Enjoy peeps.
    10. What is now known as Peru was home to several ancient cultures. Ranging from the Norte Chico civilization starting in 3500 BCE, the oldest civilization in the Americas and one of the five cradles of civilization, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in the pre-Colombian Americas, the territory now including Peru has one of the longest histories of civilization of any country, tracing its heritage back to the 4th millennia BCE. (memorize that as a conversation starter - you’ll be invited to post pandemic every pub quiz ever)
    9. Peru is a mega diverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes Mountains, vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon River.
    8. Peru has one of the most beautiful jungles in the world. It’s one of the most beautiful countries
and cradles one of the most beautiful remnants of a great civilization > Machu Pichu
    7. Under the rule of the emperor Pachacuti and his son Topa Inca Yupanqui, the Incas controlled most of the Andean region, with a population of up to 16 million. The Incas considered their King, the Sapa Inca, to be the ‘child of the sun’
    6. Millions of km of rivers and streams crisscross the country. They provide a link between the remotest of villages. The waters are treacherous and require expert navigation. Peru is home to the largest lake in South America, Lake Titicaca between Peru and Bolivia, high in the Andes. There are some tribes along the waterways where no direct contact is allowed due to the possible spread of diseases. They live as they did for hundreds of years.
    5. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century that encompassed most of its South American territories, with its capital in Lima, Peru. Peru formally proclaimed independence in 1821. (I’m
not fond of the Spanish conquistadors or any colonial invaders tbh. But that’s a whole can of worms)
    4. Peru’s population is 32 million, comprised of Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, Asians.
The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua and other indigenous languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in art, cuisine, literature, and music.
    3. In November of 2000, Fujimori, a corrupt and criminal leader, resigned from office and went into a self-imposed exile, avoiding prosecution for human rights violations and corruption charges by the new Peruvian authorities. Since the end of the Fujimori regime, Peru has tried to fight corruption while sustaining economic growth.
    2. If there isn’t a stop put to cheap wood for the fast furniture market (a problem for all endangered forests worldwide) there may be no jungle left by 2030, some experts in Peru predict (a dilemma all forests seems to face)
    1. To finish on a more positive note, modern Peruvian literature is recognized thanks to authors like Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa. (Recommended: Death in the Andes and A collection of critical essays. Both wonderful reads)

My dad drove a deuce and a half or 2.5 ton during the Korea war transporting supplies and troops. And he often told me stories of how narrow and winding the roads were to traverse over there. Not an easy job to say the least for ANY big rig driver.
