I've never understood how anyone could think this song is about Maynard's good friend, Bill Hicks. Whom the album is dedicated to. This song is about L Ron Hubbard and other cult leaders.

It could literally be about anyone else in the world, just definitely not, Bill Hicks. Whose face is printed on the inside cover 😂

Yeah, as others are saying, everything I've heard about this song is dedicated to L Ron Hubbard. They specifically mention him (literally saying "fuck you" to him too) in other songs on the album.

The journey with these wizards of lyrics and sonics is one you will never regret. I've been a fan for 30 years and I still discover something new and medical with each listen.

as many ppl are saying.. 1st I've heard of cobain and bassist. Always heard of either ron hubbard or jesus

Same 👍, personally I do lean slightly towards it being about Jesus.

Just so you know, the beep sounds in the beginning, then later, are from a megaphone that Maynard uses.🌿🌸

I thought it was the bridge of the guitar where the strings attach to the dials

The album came out in 1996 and this song is widely rumored to be either about L. Ron Hubbard (the scam artist sci-fi writer who came up with Scientology), or Bill Hicks, but I think the Bill Hicks thing is just confusion because the whole album is dedicated to him, and of course the "Arizona Bay" reference in the song Aenema. That's all I've ever heard or read as a nearly 30 year Tool fan. Never heard of Kurt Cobain, weird, but I do know some interpret the song as being about Jesus but a study of the lyrics disproves that, so I think that is just a surface interpretation of half-heard lyrics to an overwhelming song, IMHO.

And to think this is about Paul D'Amour is bonkers. He actually wrote most of the songs on this album including Eulogy.

This is one of my favorite songs. Please keep going down this Tool Journey. There is so much to learn. I know initially people tend to listen to the music but please have lyrics up. You won't regret it.

I’ve been listening to them circa 97 or so, & yeah, I would have to agree with you. This is one my fav’s for sure, in their top 3 for me personally. On an A grade sound system, it’s something else. Most music played on a good quality sound system results in a better experience, no doubt about it, but it transforms this track into a different song completely.

I think the song originally started out to be solely about L Ron Hubbard, but the older I get it seems more like he’s talking about an ego death. There is a big change in perspective from the album Undertow and Aenima

Rumours I heard since the beggining is that this song is about L. Ron Hubbard (Tool had a squabble with the Church of Scientology). Never heard anything about Kurt nor about Paul, that's completely new to me and I'm fan of the band since '98.

Not about Kurt Cobain. Definitely not about Paul D'Amour, their previous bassist. They are still friends with him. Danny just recently worked on a project with him. It's referencing L. Ron Hubbard, religious leaders and politicians.

It’s not about either of those things in my humble opinion. But of course even if you guessed right about what it was about, Maynard would never give anyone the satisfaction of, “knowing what it’s about”. lol. It’s up for interpretation. Great song either way. Also Danny Carrey said he came up with the initial tinkering intro while sitting on the toilet and tapping on the bowl. That is all. ✌️
