I can't believe it's been 3 years since I first started working as a software engineer. With all the experience and knowledge I've gained I figured it would be great to share with you all. It's been a long journey but I'm very happy with where I've ended up.
Thanks for watching!

I just had my first performance review in my first Software Engineering job out of school (just graduated in May). I did super well and got such good praise HOWEVER, the point you made about asking questions is huge. My boss told me he appreciates my ability to dive in and do all I can to solve a problem, but there have been bugs / issues I try to tackle on features I do not know about in our code base that he easily could help with. He mentioned to just reach out more and get help from the seniors and himself. This is a huge deal. Never, ever be afraid to ask for help. It makes life so much easier! Keep up the videos man. They are inspiring an ordinary guy like myself to do the same!
As a hispanic kid growing up in the hood I never thought I'd be pursuing swe, that isn't a thing in the city I live in and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to relate to other sw engineers. Knowing that I'm not the only one that feels this way is really relieving since I'm also not the type to be coding for fun on the side unless I need to like my peers at school. Thanks for sharing bro you definitely deserve a like and sub.
Congrats on your 3 years!!! Currently teaching myself Front End Development! You’re an inspiration to us all

Misconception about coders is that we just have to type on our laptops all day. No need to talk with people. Just code. That's not true. Collaboration, updates, and feedbacks are parts of programming.
Love this video as a black aspiring software engineer too I feel like I’m going through the same thing . In my junior year now
Same, soon to be 1st year of college. Goodluck to you brother!
Good luck man, this field needs much more diversity and overall just good people.
@Arturo Ochoa there is a difference being a minority doing it as well as I think said it in the video but nah you right I’m just that one guy to be honest
I've been a Software Engineer for 1 month now, and hearing your story and advice was super helpful 🙌🏼
@@boredguy5805 It's been AWESOME!! I love my job 100%. I was amazed at how much free time I have while working virtually that has allowed me to work on side projects and still get paid. Software Engineering is a phenominal field and is well respected.
@@boredguy5805 THAT'S AWESOME!!! I come from small beginnings too lol. This time last year I was working as a cook 🥓🥓. I completed my Bachelors Degree in Computer Information Systems back in May. It was a challenging major, but it was worth the hassle! I'm making the most money I've ever made in my whole life. Not to mention my job will consider me for a pay raise every 6 months 😎 based on whether or not I achieve my work goals. At the age of 22 I'm able to afford a luxury apartment. I love my career not because of the money, but because I love to build creatively lol.
How much is ur salary
@@nahomtsegaye8174 Enough to live in luxury 😎
Your day in the Life video is the G.O.A.T for software bro. I remember watching it, because I was nervous of a job interview the next day and it really helped. Also the music you used (Lakey inspired) really stuck with me! still bumping it to this day haha!
That’s incredible to hear I’m glad it helped you!
What a journey in the 3 years! Happy Anniversary and great content thanks for sharing very informative!! Congratulations on all this wonderful success!!
Geez next July 18th you should buy a lottery ticket😅 Congratulations on all you've accomplished! Excited for next years reflection😁🎉
Thank you and I might have too 😂😅

Really appreciate your honesty and openness. That is courage.
Bro.. I feel the exact same way about how I relate to other devs. I thought that if I don't do the things that other devs did in their spare time that I wouldn't progress as a dev.
You are awesome. Love watching your videos. Thank you for motivating me to code
Omg yes I’m so glad you mentioned how you were different on your journey to getting started programming, you weren’t always into computers, or grow up programming, it’s just something you chose to do as a career.
It’s so much more refreshing to hear that more than the usual, IVE BEEN CODING SINCE I WAS 10 I WENT TO HACKATHONS AND DID GOOGLE KICK STARTER WHEN I WAS 15 or something haha thank you for that.
Phenomenal video bro, this helped a lot because I feel the same as I head into my second year of college from switching from business to CS. You really motivated to keep working on my skills over the summer and to stick with it.
Third dev job in three years? That's extra motivation 💯
Shout to you for helping us be seen man. I'm new to tech and feel I don't fit in at all outside of my design role lol. We have a lot of the same hobbies and it's good to see folks in this field that are similar to me. Keep going my guy! Great vid.
Congrats on the anniversary and good call out on seeing more diversity through the self-taught and boot camp routes.
Thank you bro for your youtube channel, I love the vibe of your video, it inspire me.
Thank you for sharing this !! It helps us know that we engineers are not alone !!
Great video again! Always class gyasi
I agree...Initially I was a little hesitant asking for help, I am still but improving on that front...Nice video
I learned the best way to bump your salary is to find another job.
Find a tech stack/project you enjoy most and enjoy working there more.
Lastly, developers and engineer are humans and love to be thank and praised for their hardwork.
This is facts
@Software Journal
makes sense! passion yields energy.
Inspiring. I totally can relate to the anxiety when presenting on a team. Your wicket smart man keep it up
One lesson I've learned is that becoming a better software engineer is so much more than just getting better at programming. Congrats on 3 years, and cheers to your next 1095 days 🍻
Facts and thank you!
Congrats Gyasi! Keep up the good work!👍
Thank you 🙏🏽
Hey Gyasi! Just wanted to say I really love your channel. You provide amazing advice and your video editing style is so clean and aesthetic. I appreciate that you're a software engineer that just chose the career rather than someone whose entire life was coding. Thanks for the videos!
Great key lessons mentioned here. One lesson I can say that I’ve learned, it’s vital as you continue to grow in this capacity (especially if you’re looking for leadership opportunities), continue to have some involvement in the code. It can be challenging juggling people management, a fully loaded calendar of meetings and still make individual contributions, but it’s important to stay relevant in the tech stack. Find the balance. Take on smaller stories or at the very least do code reviews for some of the features.
Also, when opportunities present themselves to mentor/coach junior devs, take advantage of it. Pour into others.
Congratulations on your success
Thank you so much 🙏🏽
Haha feels like I'm listening to my own developer story. This touched on a lot of what I have/am experiencing. Thanks.
A helpful advice I'd give is staying motivated despite the self-doubt at times, and making use of people that inspire you & reaching out to those that'll be willing to help. People like AmigosCode, Chris Sean, Forrest Knight inspired me a lot.
I could definitely relate to what your saying 7:47. As a network engineer most of my colleagues grew up breaking apart computers while I played sports.
congrats gyasi!
Thank you!
I'm scared to start that phase of my life honestly. I can't be any more excited either though. :)
That is actually super normal!
You will do great, I promise.
@@Bielocke Thank you! I'm ready to meet supportive people like you in the industry too
Really great video! As a teenager, I wanted to be a heavy metal guitar player. Then I found out that as a guitarist, I was a better programmer :) ! Amazing story and very good lessons you have learned. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Anniversary to you and your wife. Turn up!
Little late on the vid but this has helped a lot due to the fact hoepfully I should become a software engineer next week I've done my 2nd interview and got really positive feedback so fingers crossed!! But I'll definitely take on the advice on asking for help in which i dont normally do but now need to whilst on this role so thanks for video bro appreciate 8t 👏👏👌
felt the wanting to change your major T_T this math is convincing me to switch each semester. I'm taking a 6 week compressed calc class this summer.....never again!
I'm now studying programming language bu my self, and hope to get tech job. Thx nice video. Congratulations on your the first wedding anniversary.
I like your videos first and then watch them am I doing right? Keep up the excellent work!!
Thank you so much! I could use as many likes as possible 😂
Yessir 🚀💪🏽
Thank you!
About to graduate and still trying to land the job with only one (my current) internship under my belt. My heads up high and I know I’ll make it and reach my goals.
It feels like as tech grew older, it was joked about less, and taken more seriously. Most people I was around didn't care at all about tech in any sort of way. None of the different circles I was in even considered the industry. It wasn't talked about around me at all. The increase in awareness of it as a possible career, and in its acceptance among everyone seems to grow as time moves forward.
Loved the video, I'm Currently attending a Full-Stack Bootcamp and it's going great.
I just got my first software developer job about a week ago. I've been doing Game development for about 5 years but that was always for my own personal projects or a little game I would release, so never anything in an actual business. Definitely get what you mean about impostor syndrome!😂 I'm still getting settled in and am a bit nervous but I'm motivated to becoming an amazing developer! This video really helped me out, proper appreciate it!
Congrats!
Thank you!
Great video
Dude I can literally relate to you on being someone who loves sports and can’t relate with there peers. I’m 19 studying software engineering and was looking into sports analytics

Hi ! I see that you changed the arm of the monitor (it's not the ergo anymore).
I am curious about "why" you changed it and with "which" one ? :)
Thank you mate
that Kayaking bit caught me by suprise haha not gonna lie
Aerospace Engineer here - Impostor syndrome is incredibly real for me, also considering the fact I had a pretty subpar GPA when I graduated. One experience I had while having my first year annual review with a supervisor was: While we were talking I mentioned how I felt way in over my head at times and that I even felt overpaid. He responded by saying “Look, we dont just pay you for the physical work you put out, we also pay you just to think and have an opinion”.
It was crazy that this simple statement made me feel 100x better lol So as you said, just tell someone when things dont feel right
Anyways great vid man, trying to grow a channel myself and its nice seeing a fellow POC creator (shameless self plug)
I´m thinking about start to learn coding. What language you use? And what language should i start learn in 2021 ?
Hi! I just graduated High School and I’ve always been fascinated by programming. Your channel truly inspired me to take on the challenge of becoming a software engineer. However, I am currently on the fence about what to major in, and how far I should take said major. I have questions like would a Bachelors in Computer Science be enough? Or, which languages should I prioritize? If you would kindly give me advice, it would help me a lot and it would highly appreciated.♥️
major in what interests you, if you're not sure take a few classes in a bunch of different subjects. Try out computer science and see what you think. Languages are pretty easy to pick up after your first one so just go with whatever they teach and see where it takes you. Enjoy the next 4 man
thanks

I see you a Vue.js dev, a man of culture.
Hey I have a lot of questions towards this type of career where can I ask you?
Hey man, which chair do you use?
This upcoming school year I will be a junior and I am taking a Computer science class and I am also using Khan academy to help me on my journey. Any other courses I should take before hand? Like any mathematics I need to practice?
Hey, I plan on majoring in CS this coming fall but I'm bad at math and have no experience in coding. Do you think it's possible for me to get a CS degree?
I would like to create a website like facebook and i have no experience with coding. Do you know how Facebook was created? What coding language mark used to create facebook?
What's like a university? Is that a day college? And how do you like apply? Is that another form of application?
LMFAOO "robot"
Am still in high school and I really want want to be a software engineer. I need advice from you do you think that I should start learning code. I started learning JavaScript and I don't know what laptop should I buy. So can you tell me how get organised 😅 PS huge fan
i think HP is one of best computer brands:
what could be ideal for you?
- OS: WINDOWS 10 or more. don't go to ChromeOs.
- Processor: INTEL i5 or more. don't go to *celeron* .
- Processor: INTEL 10th or more. ie new generation pc.
- Ram: at least 8GB, is recommended 16GB. don't go 4GB.
- Ram: DDR4 or more
- memory: don't use HardDrive. use 250Gb SSD or more. 500GB is recommended.
- size: it depends on your tastes, I personally prefer small 13 inches to take it everywhere, but if you want to be productive maybe a 15 inch.
- trackpad: forget about having trackpads like those of APPLE, I suggest you try in the store and see if you like it, the bigger the trackpad the better, and I like it if it's buttonless, so you can click everywhere in trackpad, Right for right button, Left for left button.
- cost: 600 € difficult to find at this price.
don't pay too much
if you are a KIDS: a PC has RGB, those with RGB are often a marketing technique. dont pay 1000€ because you dont know PC datasheets, you think for you RGB is a good PC. No.
you have to think about the quality-price.
I've legitimately never been on a video that has "No views"
what text editor do you use
What pegboard is that ?
We all need help!!!
My sister is attending a bootcamp for coding and she's feeling impostor syndrome. I told her it's her 3rd week. To take things slow and that some day she'll be a great SWE. I'll show her this video.
Odds: 0.00273972602 or 0.00000748550 if they are two distinct events that occur at the same time if those events are separated in space
I learned to:
1) Not Trust Anyone (Employer or Colleagues)
2) Be Yourself and don't compare yourself to anyone
3) Drop the Ego & Jealousy
4) Take Criticism in a good way
5) There is more bad than good in Tech World (even if a company seems great, trust me there is ALWAYS something fishy behind the scenes).
Inspiring video man. I’ m entering my first year of college coming out of high school and your videos are drifting me more towards becoming a software engineer and that’s something I thought that I would never say because growing up I have been more into sports and wanting to hoop on my free time, never been a real tech guy but after doing some research and watching more of your videos of course, I can now understand why this field can be a good fit for all types of people.
Eyoo gyasi can i be software engineer and an athlete at same time?
Do you have a lo-fi station you listen to when coding? If so can you link it?

Can you be a software engineer with ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEER GRADUATE?
yes
july 18th is my birthday 😅
Happy belated 😊
What language would you recommend for a beginner Java or Phyton?
-C is the best language for begginer.-
don't go to java. java assumes you know what classes are, libraries, and much more ...
So go python it says on the web that it's easier, again you will use classes but much later. (and i used for very interesting thing like AI, data science, backend, if you are very expert)
*I recommend Python course from Google Inc. in COURSERA!*
if you want to learn it's interesting because it's free, and it's begginer level ...
then if you finish the course and pass the quiz you will have the diploma (certificate) unfortunately if you want you have to pay it. I believe that for now you are only interested in learning so go to Coursera, it's free!
i dont know why the first line is crossed but python i think is for you.
if you really want to learn the logic first, go to Scratch ... yes you will spend a few days before but it is useful because it is a block language. with that at least the logic on how programming works... then take the course, it's your choice.
@@The-Dev-Ninja I appreciate it fam, I will take your advice thanks for the feedback!
