I’m debating purchasing the AXE16000 and doing the same as you purchasing an AC86u for AI MESH . Did your speeds and connectivity see improvement in other areas?
@@DreBruh it's only been up a few days but everything working fine so far BUT ... I'm actually going to swap out the AX86U Pro for the AX88U Pro and then make the 88 my main one. Your videos are helping me out tremendously! I have no prior experience with wifi but have learned so much from you. In my area, we have not had the option for wifi in over a decade. With that said, I just had fiber installed in my home. Unfortunately although it's fiber, we only have 100mbps speed for now. Being I am capped already by the low ISP speed, I can't afford to lose much speed through my router and mesh system not being "powerful" enough for lack of better words. If you have a moment, I could use some help on clarifying my plans/setup. I have to have a mesh system it seems. My walls are a mix of stone, drywall, etc. so there are lots of obstructions. Also, my home is oddly shaped like an "S" and has from what the fiber install techs told me, a lot of places a single router will not reach. I am looking at getting a 3 router (1 router and 2 nodes) setup and it would be GREAT to not have to hardwire them in for the backhaul (if I am saying that correctly). Due to the odd shape and such of the house, installing ethernet cables throughout the attic, walls, etc. will be a tough job here. So I have landed on getting 3 of the XT9 as 1 option. Or, to take advantage of the wifi 6, I considered getting the RT-AXE7800 as my router and hooking up 2 XT9 as nodes. I am confused how they will backhaul though since the XT9 has an extra 5g band, but the RT-AXE7800 has a 5 and 6G band... It seems although these will connect and mesh wirelessly, I may not benefit from the extra 5G on the XT9 and lose my 5G on the RT-AXE7800... is that accurate? So I have now looked into getting 2 of the XT8 instead and using them with the RT-AXE7800. I am looking at and considering these models: XT9, XT8, RT-AXE7800 for wireless as well as a wired XD5 if I must (or XD6 if that's worth the extra money). My biggest concern is just losing 20-40% of signal will have me down to 60mbps speed if not lower. So I am trying to maintain the best coverage at near 100% as possible. Thank you for your time and help! Hope to hear back.
Aimesh with Asus routers are just unbeatable, combined with all the features and also the ability to install custom firmware, its all anyone could ask for. I have an asus axe11000 as the main router and a much older Asus RT-AC5300 as a mesh node working fantastically. I do plan to upgrade the node in the future due to the discrepency between wifi 6E and wifi 5 between the main router and the mesh node. But as a mesh system it works seamlessly!
Hey great evaluation (as usual) . I am going to upgrade from an old Airport extreme to a small mesh. Due to spousal approval (size and color) it is now either the asus xd5 or tp deco x55. Awesome video. Couple questions. Can you do a mix between wireless and wired backhauls (1 wired and 1 wireless)? On any mesh system, does my "router" node need to be the primary where the others connect? My internet ingress is in my basement and then I have two floors above. Ideally, I would like the primary node in my basement and then nodes on the other floors. Would the second floor connect to the first-floor node or would they all connect back to the basement? Hopefully that makes sense. TIA
Thanks Yes, you can mix and match wired and wireless backhand. Yes the main router (from the mesh) needs to connect to the modem. The other nodes in the mesh will try to connect to the main router directly at first, if unable to they go through each other.
Do you use the default config for your testing? I have a pair of ET8s (wired backhaul) on a 1 gigabit connection. I can't exceed roughly 300 to 400 Mbps on my 6E device (Galaxy Z Fold5). I've tried 5 and 6 ghz standing right next to the main router. I've tried speedtest, fast, and google's speed test. I do get 1000 Mbps on my wired connection without issue. I've tried factory resets, tweaking various settings, and even tried installing custom merlin firmware on them. Any tips?
If you have QOS enabled, disable it. It basically caps your bandwidth to preserve it for other devices. I learned that QoS is not really necessary with gig speed internet. Disabling it should get you faster speeds.
@joshleonard7163 Thanks for the tip. QOS was turned off. But it turned out my issue was the speed test servers. Using openspeedtest on my PC I was able to fully saturate my 1 Gig network.

@@ronnie4935 the range is better on the GT6 compared to the ET8, so you will get better speeds when you are further away. I can safely say it's better but it's not going to be a night and day difference. It's only going to be a mild improvement since the ET8 itself is already fairly good.
It seems that XT9 fails to surpass ET8 and your results are supporting that as well. So value wise the ET8 is still up there (if you can find it) and GT6 is also interesting although still being "just" wifi 6 which is a little bit surprising. But at the end it is all about data transfer speed and Asus seems to be mastering wifi 6 good enough. ET12 is good but too pricey.
I didn't do a direct comparison between those two since they were tested in different environments. I remember them both being great. Maybe I'd stick with the XD5 from those two choices.
I have the ET12. 2.4.Ghz and 6 Ghz performance on individual bands works great, but 5 Ghz is sporadic and drops clients frequently. In navigating the settings I have no clue how to fix that 😢

I have the ET8 awesome mesh system. I was thinking to upgrade to the GT6 but I just found out it is WiFi 6 not WiFi 6E and I wanted to upgrade to that but seeing the different against the ET 12 pro WiFi 6E not that big in wireless speed
There’s not a big difference between ET8 and the rest if your speeds are gigabit or less.
@@landpet but in range is there any improvement compared with the ET8 and GT6
@@ronnie4935 the range is better on the GT6 compared to the ET8, so you will get better speeds when you are further away. I can safely say it's better but it's not going to be a night and day difference. It's only going to be a mild improvement since the ET8 itself is already fairly good.
Awesome info, looking to move away from ORBI's into ASUS, thanks for the video.
Glad I could help
It seems that XT9 fails to surpass ET8 and your results are supporting that as well. So value wise the ET8 is still up there (if you can find it) and GT6 is also interesting although still being "just" wifi 6 which is a little bit surprising. But at the end it is all about data transfer speed and Asus seems to be mastering wifi 6 good enough. ET12 is good but too pricey.
They’re all honestly very good systems.
For speed and range what your recommend deco x60 or XD5 ?
I didn't do a direct comparison between those two since they were tested in different environments. I remember them both being great. Maybe I'd stick with the XD5 from those two choices.
@@landpet ok 👌🏽 , and I can connect the xd5 direct to fiber with rj-45 with connection pppoe?
@@MrMatan5858589 you can connect the xd5 to the ONT with the RJ-45. ONT will be connected directly to the fiber.
Last question , I will work with backhaul wireless what good for range cover xd5 or deco ax5400 ?
?
Ive been waiting for ASUS’s Wifi 7 mesh routers for a while now. Seems like they’re not releasing a wifi 7 successor to the ET12 pro…
I'm waiting for their new mesh system as well
Ill be anticipating your video when it eventually comes :)
For 100 mbps which wifi mesh is the best?
XT9 for better speeds and coverage throughout
I have the ET12. 2.4.Ghz and 6 Ghz performance on individual bands works great, but 5 Ghz is sporadic and drops clients frequently. In navigating the settings I have no clue how to fix that 😢
Maybe change the channel it’s on. Also make sure there are no other none Asus router exists on the network
Thanks
Welcome
ASUS makes things confusing for no reason
They do offer a ton of options
No Wi-Fi 7.... Outdated....
I'm waiting for ASUS' wifi 7 mesh. I've reviewed a few other wifi 7 mesh systems like the Deco's, Orbi and eero.
