We filmed this back in March when Mykayla got her floor routine made. I had like 6 hours of footage over the 2 days that Dominic was there so it took a while to trim down... hopefully it's not still too long!

I am a 2016 Olympic Alternate and former NCAA athlete and have deferred my senior year at the University of Utah to come back to elite gymnastics and try for a spot on the 2021 Olympic Team. This channel documents my journey and gives insight into the life of someone preparing for the Olympics!

I had assumed it was at least January if not earlier. I didn't realize routines were put together so late in the season (even though I know this season has been an odd one). I was also wondering if she ever had a routine constructed for last season.

If you had been doing this as long as Mykayla, you could. Its a skill like every other aspect ofvher sport.
I occationally do choreography for cheer. They pick it up so quick.
Not comparing what Myk is doing to cheer, but picking up choreography is a well developed skill at her level.
@@gigidodson it’s true! By the time I got to high school I was the person who could fill in for anyone. Choreo gets easier the more you learn.
@@gigidodson definitely a practiced skill. When I returned to dance in middle age, remembering things was harder than doing them! Fortunately I was dancing with other people my age, so we went at the pace we needed! Mostly it was tap class I was in and we learned a routine a week until we learned out recital routine (yes, 30 and 40 year olds in the recital!) I now do ballroom and the fun part is that I don't really have to remember anything. My lead is the one who has to do the thinking!

I love this routine! And I really enjoy getting to see behind the scenes here. There are just so many elements that go into developing a floor routine!
This was super interesting! As a former dancer I always wondered how floor routines were choreographed once you got to the higher levels! Very similar to how my dances were choreographed but at the same time very different! Thank you for sharing so much of the behind the scenes!
as a dancer, I was also thinking, "similar but different". I can't remember whether we finished solos in one session (i didn't have that many). I do remember changing some things my teacher eventually realized were not suited for my body. Choreo looked different on her long arms and legs than my shorter (and less skilled) ones.
This choreographer is a genius. I went back and watched some of the other floor routines he worked on, especially from Rio. Brilliant.

Same, one year he was choreographing 3 girls routines at the same time!
(one of our coaches always says “He’s such a DiVa”)
He’s used to working with her too so he knows a lot of what her style is and like how she’s not flexible so not to do things like that. I’m not a fan of the choreo but I think if done extremely well I can appreciate it.
I just love how she gets so pumped and cheers after she finishes.it makes me smile

This reminds me as a retired non elite gymnast of the process. Behind the scenes! It’s so fun and one of the best days is working with a choreo. Getting a new routine is a big thing! I remember cassette tapes. ❤️ back in the 90’s. #teammykayla

I initially wasn't a fan of the routine, but it grew on me and I loved it by the time the Olympics came up. Your choreographer also worked with you very well, didn't give you things that doesn't look good for you

This is already one of my favourites of your videos. The process is fascinating, and the (inadvertent?) commentary is excellent. I loved Lisa and Zee's interjections, and I tip my hat to Jonas for awesome video editing. I loved that it ended with the floor routine from Day 2 of US Championships, which is my favourite of Mykayla's floor routines this year, because you can hear Jonas and Bob in the background doing what they've done for years - urging her on - and also because of her life-affirming joy at the end. Good luck in Tokyo - I'll be cheering you on from London!
