A friend of mine was lucky enough to see a performance, and never skips an opportunity to remind me that he saw it. Lucky bastard!

I was fortunate enough to see this play all those years ago in the West End. Front row seat so close to my comedy heroes. The play was good, but they could have been performing the phone book for all I cared. Sheer brilliance. There will never be another Rik Mayall. SO TRAGIC.

Can't believe this is on here. I googled it after the sad news of his death as I was trying to remember when it was - not expecting to find any recording of the performance.
I was lucky enough to see them perform it and found it funny, moving and full of energy - I didn't realise till I saw this how much the critics had panned it. This was the only Beckett piece I ever enjoyed watching and had everything to do with what phenomenal comic performers they were. RIP Rik and thanks for the memories x

I agree and thank you. I also saw this and it remains one of the most memorable performances I have seen live.

Man, I went up to see this as part of a school trip way back in the day. Thank you for posting, great memories of seeing this!

I was lucky enough to see this show in 1991 when I was about 8 years old and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about Beckett or the play itself at the time but I understood the plot and their characters. Sounds like the newspaper critics that slated it must have been purists or didn't understand their style of comedy.

So glad I found this as I thought I imagined that I saw them in Godot. That's what booze can do to the brain. Thanks for posting.

OH MY GOD THANK SO MUCH FOR THIS! I'm just reading 'Waiting for Godot" and I knew that Rik and Ade have acted in it, but I didn't know which one was playing Estragon and which Vladimir. Anyway, after a few first pages it was obvious. I just knew it was that way round :D Brilliant

Fan-fucking-tastic! I'd had trouble picturing Rik and Ade in WFG so this a great help.

This inspired them to make "Bottom".

Looked for this trying to find the whole play. Rik and Ade were perfect casting for these parts, and the critics have shown themselves to be small-minded snobs.

@Ravenshard019 I know! Just saw this play an hour ago and it's brilliant, and lovely because even though completely different actors, Gogo is SO Ade, and Didi is SO Rik... They're so CUTE together! You can definitely tell that Bottom is, in a way, just another version of this brilliant play :)

Only needed Nigel Planer to have all 'the Young Ones' onstage........ Philip Jackson - 'Dylan' in Porridge-the Movie and Mr Greaves in 'Scum'. Underrated, for sure. Bog be praised !

I was too young by a few years to see this, but it may well have been crap for all I know. I do still love these two, almost as much as I have for many years loved Beckett. Both knew the power of a knob joke.

@SophisticatedLunatic Definitely! You can totally see that this play is their exact kind of thing :) And they do make such a good companionship - it's strange how some things just seem perfectly fated isn't it? ;) I love how in all of their on screen acts Rik is always like extrovertly domineering, but emotionally submissive, and Adrian is always passively dominant, and emotionally 'strong' (translated - a couldn't give a shit attitude haha)

They're only saying that cos they can't see past The Young Ones, etc. Bastards!
I thought it looked great; I've studied Waiting for Godot and Rik and Ade managed to retain both their natural chemistry and the intended mood of the play. Bugger the critics.

Listen to these crictics. Godot is a bloody hard play to act out. If its not done with comedic flare then it should not be done at all. The play needs to be done in a comicaly way or else it would just be boring. I say well done Ade and Rik.
