Great footage, glad to see 8606 (and also 8649) are back up and running again... Maybe one day 4615 will become lucky and get fixed up too. And some time the U boat set, that would be great to see again some day.
Some photo posted by someone showed 8606 with pans installed and raised to the wire at Lithgow last Saturday (13 July 2018). The loco wasn't running under it's own power 48120 hauled it out under the wires. Seems like something is happening.
more than likely it will be another 10 - 15 years before there is a running U set. It seems that a lot of what has been said about this transfer is largely rumour in terms of what the plan is. It's possible that the electric locos may be re-activated to run this year.
Great video Phil. Thanks very much for your enthusiasm in producing these Vlogs. I pass lots of guys filming there at Sodwalls. I live at Tarana. I am concerned at seeing the U Boats going to Lithgow though. If they’re there for even just a short period, they’ll be vandalised within the first week. 😡
Nice video! Supposedly 4615 and 8606 will be restored for some work (likely underground) for Sydney Trains. CF5003 and CF5021 will be put into safe storage. CF5003 was actually part of the first electric train to Gosford on January 23, 1960. Given that the last U sets ran under their own power November 3, 1996, they've never been seen with Milleniums, Oscars or Waratahs. 4615 and 8606 last ran tours in 2005 so haven't been seen with newer trains either. Will be very interesting if some footage can be gained of the 2 electric locos running on the network amongst all these modern trains which weren't around when they last worked.
I guess the 86 class was the last electric freight locomotive in service in New South Wales! It looks good with that 8200 class! I guess the hassle of changing engines ended freight electrification in NSW I was fortunate enough to see an electric locomotive move myself! It was two Amtrak AEM7s on the Southwest Chief, which were retired a whole year ago when I saw them!
There were restored for SETS (Sydney Electric Trains Society) because there is only 5 full 46 class EMU’s and there was a cab of one discovered earlier in October 2020
Maybe they’re gonna be restored into service like that 600 railmotor that was at thirlmere thats being restored into operation at the moment. Also Geroges Plain station looks really nice
NSWRM actually have 4638 which is stored at Broadmeadow loco depot and they have 8646 at Thirlmere. I'm guessing either there isn't an intent to restore them or just flat out with other projects such as 3801, etc and it would be a very long time before those 2 would be restored to run again. Valley Heights Museum has 4601 which has been statically restored with same livery as 4615 but is missing parts and would need a lot of work. They also have u set trailer ETB6039
The plan for both 4615 and 8606 is for them to be reactivated for Sydney Trains who will use them on maintenance trains on the underground network and a variety of other jobs. Plan for U-boat cars is for them to also be reactivated for use on the AK cars and if we're lucky, maybe even heritage use.

I have never seen a 46 Class or U Boat under their own power before, it’ll be great to see :)
Great video and 8125 at the start!!! It’s a model I’m getting soon.
Very nice, Phil! I got a couple shots of the transfer at Tarana and Bowenfels after chasing the C classes.

Congrats on 9K subs , Lets hope You can reach 10K subs very soon

4615 and 8606 belong to SETS (Sydney Electric Train Society; independent of TfNSW). They were being transferred for restoration. I've donated ... :)

Apparently 8606 and 4615 will be restored for use on maintenance trains by Sydney Trains.
