    New Distributor from 1AAuto.com 1aau.to/ia/1AED...
    The ignition distributor manages the timing and firing order of the spark plugs in engines without electronic control, and some early versions of electronically controlled ignition. If the distributor in your car or truck is worn, damaged, or broken, your engine will have difficulty running, or even starting. This video shows you how to install a new distributor on your 1994-2004 Chevy S-10.

    I really wish the Haynes manual had mentioned that there are two marks on the balancer. I aligned the first mark with the notch visible from the top. This explains why the damn thing won’t fire off and sounds out of time (other than the fact it hasn’t ran since I bought it as a project truck).

      So what you really didn't do was to check to see if the number 1 cylinder piston at TDC and thus was on the compression stroke. In those direction it does tell you to TDC the engine before removing the distributor and it tells you how to verify that your engine is in the TDC position,

      If anyone else is having trouble locating the spot to mark it is directly below a bolt that attaches the harmonic damper bracket to the front of the engine (piece of metal that sticks out).

    @ 4:10 it looks just about perfect.
    @ 4:14 it looks to me like you went too far. Is that just due to camera angle or something ?
    The amount of difference looks to me like maybe 1 tooth on the spiral gear.
    Could 1 tooth difference be enough to cause a problem ?

    • @michaelrehkop4817
      @michaelrehkop4817 2 года назад

      you shouldn't have been able to tighten it all the way down if the oil pump drive wasn't correctly installed because the distributor would not have been fully flush against the lower intake housing before you tightened the bolt.

    I have the oil pump alignment issue he speaks of 6:35. Original equipment has a taper (machined not worn) at the end of the shaft, there's does not. Jiggling it doesn't help. Any ideas on how to get this to seat in the proper position?

    • @michaelrehkop4817
      @michaelrehkop4817 2 года назад

      Watch the video again paying close attention starting at 5:30 and ending at 7:00. Notice as he is removing the distributor he lifts gently so that he can see when the housing is no longer turning in that counter clockwise direction. Once it stops turning counter clockwise he stops and marks the housing directly below where the end of the pick up arm is pointing. That is your reference point for reinstalling the distributor once the engine has been set at TDC. If the rotor and distributor housing are lined up at that mark and you then drop the distributor down into the engine while allowing for the distributor housing to turn clockwise as it drops in and you can see the distributor housing resting flatly on top of the lower intake manifold and the rotor is pointing at the number 6 you will have successfully & correctly installed it. Install the distributor bolt and tighten finger tight. Do not tighten all the way down because you may still need to do some slight timing adjustments via twisting the distributor cap while the engine is running. If needed. you'll need to be using a timing light and begin watching for the white mark on the harmonic balancer to line up with the timing mark on the engine block. Once you have the engine in time then tighten the distributor bolt and shut off the engine. restart and see if it idles right.

      I am sure you figured it out by now but you can use a flat head to turn the actual pump in the engine to help with alignment issues.

      Use a long flat head screwdriver to turn it inside the engine. Before doing that, look at the bottom of your new distributor and align the rotor to the little tab that has number 6 imprinted on it. Then look at the tab at the end of the distributor to see where the slot orientation is. Then what you want to do is imagine what the distributor when mounted in the engine will have the slot facing, and what you want to do is take your screwdriver and turn the oil pump drive to about the same position inside the engine. Then just insert your distributor like how this video explains.. if it goes all the way down and bottoms out, then you have it aligned correctly, if not then use the screwdriver to adjust the position again.
