Exactly. Who gives a flying F what others think. It’s that exact mindset that watch manufacturers, like Rolex, want people to think. 😅 I purchased a Benrus Type I watch from SM. It’s amazing. As good as the Type I from Benrus itself. Let’s face it, I doubt that Benrus make the cases themselves anyway. My watch varies only a few seconds only a day. Brilliant. 😊

Homages and copies exist because big brands priced themselves out by pricing in “prestige.” The entire business model of these big brands is to monopolize a design they’ve marketed over time. They could have been working on newer and better designs, but they spent little time/resources doing that. This is on those brands.

The bezal wasn't misaligned, and you showed the watch for a second or two max, you did not talk about the brushing, finishing or showed the actual watch in detail, which is completely disingenuous.
Just commented while driving your car, so basically just your opinions without any actual filming of the watch,
Its using a seiko movement which if you are to be believed was way out of speck, yet no video on a time graph machine, again misleading.
Maybe you just got a bad one ie movement, but I don't believe you as the way you shot the video wasn't to show the watch it was to bash it.
      Completely dishonest

How pompous presenting one’s self as the voice of the watch community and what it “respects” or doesn’t respect. The insecure person with a weak argument will frequently frame their position as “we” instead of “me” because they think “we” gives their take added validity and clout. It’s similar to the person who shares “people tell me all the time” stories that never happened or “sir you are such a genius” episodes that occurred only in their head.
Spend ANY time in the watch space and you will find that the gatekeepers are an ever shrinking part of the community and that there aren’t ANY universally held sentiments. Even if it is “most people”, who cares? When a snob finds another snob they often validate their minority view and smugly proclaim that’s how “everybody” thinks. It’s not enough to not buy a watch one dislikes, keyboard “experts” want to herd you into not liking or buying it either. Say no to herding.
He doesn’t like or respect homages yet states that he bought three? Calling bull#$&@. Ignoring the large portion of SM’s catalog that aren’t homages means that he weasels out of comparing a sub-$300 original SM design to another sub-$300 offering from a competitor. That disingenuous approach reeks of ignorance, bias or a hidden agenda. Perhaps all three. He supposedly bought three SM’s and is unaware, or purposefully omits, that SM has many original designs that frequently sell out? That is either ignorance of the subject matter or deception by omission. Either of which mocks the validity of his “perspective” (and why not just call it his “opinion”?).
People who are actually familiar with SM QC know that it very much holds its own with watches in the same price tier including Seiko, Seagull and Timex. Only the most shallow think “luxury goods” garner respect and gatekeeping snobs hurt the hobby more than any watch company ever will. I honestly suspect that many of the “I got a bad one” SM stories are keyboard posturing based on my talking face to face with many other enthusiasts who own SMs and the dozens that I have owned or handled.
I organize and attend many watch events, own hundreds of watches in multiple price tiers and conduct research on watch companies and their histories yet even I only claim to speak for myself. When one digs a little deeper one often finds that much of the SM hate isn’t even really about homages but rather thinly veiled animosity towards their country of origin. You don’t hear the same level of homage indignation for the many Day-Date and OP derivatives made by Swiss companies yet there are many more of those.
Tell me how small you are without telling me how small you are.

These Chinese micro brands have demonstrated that quality can be achieved in a much more cost-efficient way than high end or mid-end brands. They can in every aspect beat a Seiko except the original design. Standard sapphire Crystal, screw down crown, higher end bracelets so on and so forth with the same movement as a Seiko. Perhaps there is a lesson here for brands like Seiko and Hamilton that ask 10x more for fewer features. Knowing also that they have in house movements and original designs they can easily throw in sapphire crystal and a better bracelet. My Hamilton Kakhi has a shit Lume which is a complete shame for a brand like that.
Also I agree with whomever said this guy is a watch snob. Bla bla and this and that about how poorly built is a San Martin. I have one and it’s an outstanding watch for the price and has a much higher score quality to price ratio than all the big brands up there especially Rolexes.
Last but not least respect to these micro brands making these nice designs accessible to the majority of watch lovers who can’t afford them or have other priorities.

I love it when I see so many RUclips reviewers talking about how these copies will get you no respect in the watch community, but in the same video go on to say that it doesn't matter if you're buying your watch as a snob or value buyer, just wear your watch. At the end of the day, who cares? No one would have the balls to tell me to my face they do not respect me because I'm wearing an homage watch. I truly believe that most people buy what they like and what they can afford. Clearly, there is a demand for these designs at a much cheaper price. Therefore, someone will step in to fill that demand. I must've gotten lucky with my San Martin purchases. I own the exact San Martin GMT here. To be fair, it has smaller dimensions than the Tudor GMT it is copying, which makes it more attractive for people who love the design, but have a smaller wrist. It also has the same GMT movement that's found in the Seiko 5 GMT, which everyone is praising for what it provides at the cost it is. If you're really looking for high accuracy, buy a quartz. Let's call a spade a spade, you should also point out that the issues this has for the price isn't that bad when Tudor has some quality control issues at a much higher price point than this. You should expect these issues from a Chinese homage. I would be surprised if these issues werent there in these brands.

Due to the significant price gap, Tudor and San Martin are not comparable. However, when San Martin demonstrates unparalleled value for money, it prompts people to consider whether Tudor possesses quality commensurate with its high price. This encourages consumers to rethink their purchasing strategies, indirectly compelling Tudor to seriously consider quality rather than relying solely on its brand to maintain high prices. This is also advantageous for Tudor's consumers.

  • @ysmetannikov

Technically, you can not steal a design once it has been released, only copied, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Regarding the precision of movement - I often don't wear my automatic Tag Carrera on a weekend, long enough that it stops, and on Monday I have to set the time and the date. San Martin losing tge whole minute a day (probably the worst case scenario, as Seiko movement is pretty good) - five minutes a week - is not a big deal. As far a small details are concerned, it is all about comparison, and when you have one watch on your wrist little flaws are not as obvious (or important for that matter) as when comparing watches side by side.
And yes, making a watch review while driving a car is not adding credibility to it.

buy it. wear it and get the feel for it. it might turn you off on the real deal. that's the great thing about these cheap homages, they allow you to test drive a form factor. The omega seamaster is imo too big, thick and the bezel sucks. based on a pagani homage. they resell for about half price as well so you're not losing too much off their really cheap price anyway.

Watched this review with concerns regarding your assessment style. I am a small time collector and I can only afford watches that are valued up to $500. Comparing this San Martin to a watch like a Rolex is ridiculous and hardly fair. Most of us can't afford to spend 10 to 20,000$ on a watch. Looking down on those of us who buy watches that look like more expensive watches is snobby and disingenuous . Suggesting that watchmakers come up with original designs is also unrealistic. I don't remember Rolex or even Omega coming up with a completely original design in the last 20 years. Complaining that these so-called fake watches lose 20 or 40 seconds per day is also a joke. Most of us don't have the machine that measures such a thing and also if we have a bit of a collection we only wear the watch for a day or two or maybe a long weekend and then we change to another watch in our collection not even noticing the piece may have lost a minute or two. Is youre schedule actually that tight?
I regularly watch and subscribe to Jody, Teddy, Marc, Andrew and others who purchase, recommend and wear the watches you look down upon. They also own the Black Bays and Seamasters. I'd put my 1973 Accutron or Citizen Blue Angels Eco-Drive AT up against any 20,000$ watch for accuracy any day. Also, the NH35 is bullet proof. It would cost me 80$ to replace if it fails--which it won't. How much is a calbre 3135?
    Out.

Maybe I’ll do a Seiko vs San Martin video next for all those plebs. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. I’m just demonstrating that San Martin isn’t the luxury alternative many claim it to be. Quality wise, they’re entry level watches. I’m glad to see them trying to design their own watches though. I think it’s a move in the right direction for the brand.

Funny, but none of your remarks applies to any of my San Martins (I have six to date). It seems to me too much of a coincidence that the watch you show has all these QC issues. The bezel misalignment can very easily be manipulated (the bezel isn't actually rotated, just shown in its purportedly misalgigned position); the watch is not put on a timegrapher, so we just have to take your word for it that the watch is one minute out; the sharpness of the clasp's edge is also something that we cannot actually see or feel.
I am not completely convinced of this review being as unbiased as you would have us believe.

I bought a San Martin last month. After a month the San Martin only have 1 minute ahead atomic time. Also alignment of the bezel is perfect. It cannot compet with luxurious watchmakers of course but for the money, regarding that price range is hard to beat San Martin imo.

Hmmm. I have five SMs, after a long series (i am 69) of Seikos, Citizens, Tissots and even a Rado. Firstly, the NH3x movements are bottom-tier, for sure, and to be avoided; both the accuracy and crown comments -- not unknown for NH3x -- are inconsistent with the ETA 2824-clones in my watches. All mine are COSC-accurate in use. But you pay for that: mine are maybe $70 more than the NH3x models. The dial and case quality are all clearly exceeding Swiss models < $2k (or more), but "no" they aren't better than top tier watches. But i *like* fully functional classic designs; you can call them clones. I will smile. -- gary ray

Losing 1 minute a day? LOL Nice try. I have too many watches to count that are powered by Seiko automatic movements and the most any of those lose a day is 12 seconds. most of them actually gain + or - 2 seconds a day. Open the back and regulate it if it is that bad. its pretty easy to do. Much easier than your Tudor or Rolex.

    • @burbinghard
      @burbinghard  Месяц назад

I sent it back for that reason. I have dozens of watches (3 other San Martins) and accuracy that poor is unacceptable. I shouldn’t have to regulate a new watch IMO. NH34 should be -20 to +40/ day by specs. Two of my other San Martins run slow, but not slower than -20.

How many watches, sorry timepieces have 'stolen designs'??? Most of them!! I have owned several Rolex, Tudor, Omega to name a few (flipped my Tudor bb bronze due to misaligned bezel) and have enjoyed my San Martin watches just as much as these 'luxury brands'. Yet another pointless review, sorry man you seem like a decent bloke but comparing what you look for in a watch (Tudor) to San Martin is a complete waste of time.....the cost. So many watch experts now on RUclips, its tiring. If you had no display back or branding on the watch half these clowns wouldn't have a clue what they were reviewing!
