The Contentious & Forgotten History of Captain N: The Game Master

  • For 3 seasons Nintendo had an animated show on the air called Captain N: The Game Master, which centered on Captain N teaming up with Mega Man (sorta), Kid Icarus (kinda) and Simon Belmont to battle Mother Brain.
    Mostly forgotten and relegated to a footnote in Nintendo's history, the creation of the show is still disputed by some of the people involved.

    Fun Fact: Also via an interview with one of the show's writers, he stated that the most input that the team was ever given about the games were muddy VHS footage of a few scenes from some of the games recorded for about a few minutes with no context. He also stated that when seeing footage of Metroid, it was thought that "an orange robot" would not make for a good character, thus Samus was left out of the show, but then many years later when hearing that Samus was actually a badass female bounty hunter he very much regretted not making her a character as that would have been a really good idea.

      I can't remember the episode, but Princess Lana had stated that _Kevin would forget everything about VideoLand upon returning to the real world._ Depending on how much time in the real world had passed, that'd potentially be an *awkward conversation with the parents.*

      Actually, I wondered that a few times. But, yeah, I have always considered it a difference in how time passes. So, if Kevin ever went home, it would be exactly when he got taken to Videoland, similarly to Marty returning to 1985 moments before he went back to 1955.

    With the exception of the Mario and Zelda cartoons, was Captain N the only "promotional" cartoon not created to advertise toys?
    IT's also odd that Nintendo never made a game about Captain N, but I suppose nearly all their games were developed in Japan at the time. So Nintendo Japan had the final say.

    • @hwogrillo
      @hwogrillo 5 лет назад +27

      I'd reckon the Sonic syndicated cartoon would fall into the same pile. It had mostly original characters outside of Sonic, Tails, and Dr. Robotnik, and it didn't really seem to have a whole lot to do with anything in the games other than the setting. And they gave Sonic a weird chilli dog fetish for..reasons.
      Oddly enough the weird original characters they made for the syndicated show actually did end up in Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine for Genesis, but if memory serves me correctly the series was already done by that point. I'm fairly certain I was the only person on earth watching the show anyways.

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  5 лет назад +34

      I guess it comes down to what you would classify as a "toy." It certainly wasn't created to push an action figure line. But an NES is still a "toy."
      But yes, Captain N appears to have been more of an Nintendo of AMERICA production and when Nintendo of JAPAN got back into the marketing picture they very much buried Captain N and any remnants of it.
      Highly, HIGHLY unlikely that Captain N would ever make it to Smash Bros.

      Yeah, I've often thought he would be an excellent addition to Smash. Smash 4, and Ultimate are reunions for Pit, Mega Man, Simon Belmont, and Lana(, as the character was based on Palutena).
      I can imagine Nintendo being of the opinion that Captain N/Kevin Keene is a product of the time the idea, and character was created. Another thing is that they did include a hand firing a(n) model 2/orange NES Zapper in Duck Hunt's Smash 4 trailer, though I'm not sure how ok they would be of a character on-screen firing a toy gun with the word "Nintendo" on it. To my knowledge, during development of the past few Smash titles, it was always made clear that the ray gun item was purposely designed to resemble a toy gun; in other words, purposely unrealistic. Comparatively, the NES Zapper models, grey, and orange, look much closer to realistic guns, than the ray gun item. These reasons of looking more realistic compared to the ray gun item, and having the word Nintendo on said gun, I often have thought are the reasons why the Zapper was never made an in-game item, or a selectable costume/aesthetic for Mii Gunner characters. The SNES Super Scope, also by comparison, has a more toyish appearance.

    DIC really was one of the most notorious when it comes to not properly licensing or overly licensing expensive music.
    Kid video being one of the most egregious. When it was replayed for syndication they had to completely remove probably dozens of licensed songs.
    Which is funny considering that was like the one thing that show had going for it. There was a hilarious episode of some version of the Mario Bros. animated show that included in appearance by Milli vanilli including they're notorious music that instead of being replaced for the DVD was simply removed entirely with I believe nothing in its place.

    Thank you so much for giving dignity to our imaginations with this vid. 10 years ago I had to question my sanity if this show existed. Every time i talked about it people thought I was nuts! Nobody seemed to remember it! I used to draw scenes of it during class. This show did with genre mixing what most kids were all doing - mixing their lego sets together - Robin Hood going on adventures with Spacemen so to speak.
    Someone clairify my memory: there was an episode that had the characters participating in an Olympics of some kind. There was a waterfall that poured into a big round pool - except the pool was a disc floating in the air - like a water portal. You jumped in and there was some kind of treasure at the bottom. It was like some kind of artistic quantum mechanics brain puzzle for my child mind! If you jumped in from the top, you were underwater. What would happen if you entered the disc from the underside?!
    Anyway, the 3rd season broke my heart at the lack of quality and the blatant money grab that was tge imsertion of "game-boy" which totally ruined the show. All this inspiring imaginative stuff for my future career as an artist...and I never even owned a Nintendo 😛

    I will forever HATE the fact that the government stopped the “Saturday Morning” genre
    I firmly believe that those that grew up with shows like Transformers, He-Man, Thundercats, COPS, etc grew up with a better sense of right and wrong where later generations that grew up with all the lame comedy toons that started to dominate from the 90s seem to think everything is a joke

    • @JohnDoe-wq5eu
      @JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 года назад +11

      I wouldn't say the government itself was the main cause of the demise of Saturday morning cartoons.
      I just got way cheaper for them to first do like dubbed anime and stuff like that. But then it just became too expensive and it was just way cheaper to put on sports or some other produced news shows or something. The real problem was cable. Once channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon dominated there was no point.
      With the rise of streaming services it was absolutely inevitable. I do miss action cartoons though don't get me wrong. It was a different time unfortunately. It's not what people want for the most part I guess or not what they're pushing at least.

      That's just your nostalgia filter talking. Each generation has its share of decent shows and its share of trash. The older ones simply have the benefit of time filtering the trash out of our memories. There are plenty of good cartoons being made nowadays. The sheer amount of available media means that more of the trash makes its way to our screens. But time will filter even these one day.

    Prior to Nintendo Power there was the Nintendo Fun Club, which was a newsletter that you could subscribe to and have arrive via snail mail. There was also an 800 number you could call and to hear "Captain Nintendo" give a pre-recorded message and a game tip. This was all around the time the first Zelda game dropped. All of this was free, but as we all know, free doesn't last very long before it becomes Nintendo Power, a magazine you would receive a first free issue to, then have to pay for a subscription from then on. There was also a 900 number you could call to talk to a live game expert for tips if you got stuck in a game (I actually called once for a part of Zelda II I was stuck on).

    Always dislike Captain N’s interpretations of NES character.
    Mega Man: A green suited midget with an annoying scrawny voice.
    Simon Belmont (Castlevania): A con artist narcissistic coward who claims he’s the greatest Vampire hunter, but is obsessed with his looks and his stupid mirror.
    Pit (Kid Icarus): Kinda wimpy and androgynous who seems to play the damsel in distress type with an oversize head. Oh look I got my weak little bow and arrow.
    Mother Brain (Metroid): A stereotypical take on the Angry middle-age Black Momma persona. WTF?

    • @JohnDoe-wq5eu
      @JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 года назад

      I mean it was pretty clear they were allowed way more artistic freedom then they would ever be allowed today.
      They went so far off model it's ridiculous. The most interesting thing I think is the fact that Simon Belmont (Konami) and Megaman (Capcom) got the worst of it by far.
      Sure mother brain was "a black mama persona" but it's based on a character you see very little of in the actual game it's based on anyway.(by the way where the heck is Samus?!)
      Most of the Nintendo characters were pretty well represented I think even pit for the most part.

Back then, it was just another photo for my collection. Now I consider it a piece of early 90s history.

    I vaguely remember the top 3 players got to move on to the championships at Universal Studios (like in the Wiz) and that Dustin Diamond looked VERY put out to be there.
