    I used my tax refund and stimulus check to get one month ahead. I pay everything on the first of the month, regardless of the due date. (Most of my bills have a negative balance at that time.) With my paychecks, I pay “The Kitty” which funds everything I’ll pay on the 1st of the next month.

      I started accidentally, actually.
      I “meant” to set my power and water bills to pay 1/2 of the amount every 2 weeks, on payday.
      I accidentally set it to pay the FULL amount every two weeks.
      I noticed when my account was LEAN. It was a rough couple of weeks.
      But since the hard part was over, I decided to keep it up. I always have a credit on the books with power and water.
      For the others, I would choose one and decide on a fixed amount to pay (even if it was variable)
      I chipped away at them like that until I had a credit.

I use envelopes to put money aside for bills, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. (I also put the envelopes in order, with a postit on the front, stating who the money is for and how much is in there. I get the envelopes for free from my bank). I also just got a longevity pay increase. It was only 27 dollars, but l pretend it’s not there and just use the old amount l was getting; this also helps me to stay ahead of my bills!

      @@cherylT321 I'm not in a situation where I can use any tax refund to get ahead like this, at least not this year, but I do have a fun that I can use for it. So maybe I can start the month by using those funds, and then I guess the trick is just to save everything you're paid normally throughout the month for the next month's bills, right? But then the stress of having to pay bills this week or that week is alleviated because you've already paid them all that one shot.

I’m also saving a little bit more during this pandemic because l’m not driving as much as l used to, so l’ve been able to save some of the money l would normally use for gas as an extra savings. This was a little hard to follow for me for some reason, but I really enjoyed your take on the visuals! I might have to watch it again, but.... It's a nice alternative! The way I did it...was I focused on one bill per month. I paid one year of mint mobile service, great now no phone bill. I paid one year on my remaining subscription. I paid one year on renters insurance. I knocked out all the little bills so I could focus on the larger ones gradually. Now I'm definitely ahead & totally pleased with myself about it. It's such a security! I do make sure to add to the other bills gradually as needed during the times they are not due. Like storage, I am 3 months ahead. Each month gets $50-$100. I think the most important thing about getting ahead is realizing there needs to be some sacrifice. It really took a lot of effort to have this honest conversation with myself! It's like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger you will become.

      Good question. Two totally separate funds. You use the month ahead fund to pay bills while you replenish the money during the current month to pay for next months bills. Basically you are paying this months bills with last month’s money.
      The emergency fund is only to be used for emergencies. For example a large car repair that exceeds the amount you may have saved for car repairs.

    I gotta ask a question. So we have 3 incomes, 1 weekly, 1 biweekly, and 1 4 weekly. We let most of the incoming money build up then when the 4 weekly money comes in we pay everything in 1 go (we have a separate account solely for paying bills so the whole amount goes on there 4 weekly and goes out when necessary) and basically go down to zero. Would you say this was being a month ahead or kinda paycheck to paycheck?

    • @LininUpDucks
      @LininUpDucks  4 года назад

      With the way I am reading your comment I believe the answer is yes. What is the account balance once you pay all of your bills? Also, Are there ever any bills that need to be paid that there isn't money left in that account to pay?

      @EverTheOptimist37 4 года назад

      @@LininUpDucks the bill specific account usually goes down to about £100 the day before we fill it with the £1140 of our bills. Would a month ahead be having the £1140 in there already then adding the new £1140 for the bills? Sorry if I'm making it more confusing.

    • @LininUpDucks
      @LininUpDucks  4 года назад +2

      Think of it like this. If you were laid off of your job when you had already paid your bills in one month would you have enough to get you to the end of the following month without having to work a day. It is all in how much padding you want in the account. My husband gets really nervous if ours gets below $500. If the way I'm reading this is correct, I would build up another £1140 and try not to let the balance drop below what one month of expenses are for y'all.

      @@kbanghart an emergency fund is completely separate and should be kept separate and only touched for emergencies. The easiest way to explain a month ahead fund is that you are paying “this month’s” bills with “last month’s” money. It will absolutely work and would absolutely give you more flexibility towards the end of your month. I would do everything you can to save up your month ahead fund. During your month find your bill account first then break up the remaining money by however many weeks you have until payday. If you cash budget pull out one week at a time from your cash stash, if you debit card budget open a “parking place” savings account that you are going to pull out your weekly amount as you need it. Budgeting when you get paid only once a month takes incredible discipline and planning ahead. You are going to do great!!!

      Yes. I have a separate checking account I have nicknamed “month ahead fund”. I put money in every pay period and my bills auto draft out of that same account. I don’t use the account for anything else.

    Why do you get paid this way in the US? In germany we get paid monthly 🤔

      🤷🏻‍♀️ I agree that monthly would be much easier. Some employers do that but most don’t.

      It's fairly common. I'm in Canada and found that when we are salaried, it's twice a month. As an hourly employee it's usually every two weeks. Some professions like teachers get paid monthly and they complain about how difficult it is. (ps, I might add that Europe has better holidays than the USA as well. Curious as to the parental leave?)

    A bit late now but you could free up money by NOT doing the restaurant fund and cutting the cable in my opinion.

      Definitely great suggestions but this was just a sample budget for illustration.

      @@LininUpDucks I understand we all have to prioritise in our own way. One of my ways is to not own a Television at all as I have done for the last 13 years. That way I can avoid, cable fees, satellite fees and here in the UK the dreaded TV Licence Fee of £157.50 or the US equivalent of $203.43 per year. And I don't do eating restaurants so I was already saving anyway. Best wishes to you and your channel.

    This video was a little confusing to follow at first because it didn't actually say how to get a month ahead. It mostly showed what it would ACTUALLY look like if you get a month ahead but no HOW to...

    You didn’t do the mortgage right... you said the balls represent $50 and the mortgage is $1100... you didn’t put enough balls in it should of been 22 balls not 11 as well as another one you did...

      Hmmmm I’m going to have to watch the video again tonight. I know for certain once I only out 11 I’m bc I was using the bill splitting concept to balance out your monthly bills throughout the month.

      if you look closely she's putting two balls in the cup:
      1 ball ($50) + 1 ball ($50)= 2 balls ($100)
      $100 x 11 + $1,100
