This is the work of a master magician: to make himself and his instrument completely disappear, leaving the listener alone in the room with a composer. The clarity and brilliance of this performance forms a direct conduit into the mind of music's greatest genius. Thank you Mr. Ryan, and Bravo!
Ive seen em all , heard em all and Gary is right up there with the very best. A true talent and should be much more widely known and appreciated. A musician of the highest order! Great video!
I have heard so many good versions of this piece but without doubt this is my favourite to date. But that does not suprise me at all when I see who is playing. Why this genius is not a household name is a mystery. he makes it a joy to be alive when I hear him play his guitar and I suspect he is not of this earth or world.
For anyone confused, from 2:50 onwards Gary is playing the Double (variation movement) to the Bourreé. Each movement in the original Partita is followed by a Double.
At last! A classical guitarist who can play without over-playing and avoiding the hideous sound of over-attacked brittle bass strings that ruin the lovely natural tone of a decent guitar. If you need to be louder, get a decent condenser microphone and some subtle speakers. They are infinitely more pleasant sounding than having to overdo the metallic bass strings. Lovely performance. Highly musical and very tasteful. Note how the strings/articulation are matched in tone. I appreciate the fact that Gary Ryan keeps the PULSE of Bach going without over the top rubato. Bach has to have a pulse otherwise it's not Bach;)
This is so well played from a really great and modern performer/ professor. I think I spotted a Neumann km 184 condenser mic but if you would be so kind to tell me what the make of the Ribbon Mic is if possible?...Not that I could afford one !!
Ok I've been through every single song from the Entire Lute collection, BWV995,996,997,998,1000,1006a.....What is the real name of this song???? There are two Bourree's from 996 and 1006a and neither of them are this. What a Beauty! Gary ryan you are awesome! Someone please help with the song name>??????
excelent playing, congratulations !!!!! I play the Segovia's version of this theme, and I like your version more, can I get a copy from your arrengemnet? thanks in advance Daniel Tedesco
You can find this Bourree as BWV 1002 but it is for violin originally! Notation for guitar can be found on the site of Scribd, a great site for sheet music. You have to become a member but you have 1 month free trail! Just do that and you won't be disappointed!
David is playing a Stephen Hill guitar. Stephen is an Englishman but learned the craft in the so called Granada school. He is situated in La Herradurra a nice little town on the coast of Andalusia just about 70 kilometers from Malaga.
This is the key that the guitar version is almost always played in. If you try to play Bach on guitar always in the key of the original instrument, it rarely works. Insisting on keeping the original key is like putting a straitjacket on yourself - I really don't see the point - unless you want to enlighten me!
It's clearly the Bourree when he starts, but he mixes in the "Double" - which is a type of variation used by Bach. It has the same chord structure, turned into flowing arpeggios. Unless you were expecting the other (E minor) Bourree!! This is the B minor one. ;-)@Martin G
Incredible fluidity, dynamics and tone...one of the finest Bach performances I've ever witnessed. Bravo sir!

Christopher Rude I’m a guitarist and magician!
Lovely, but why do some guitarists flick their left hand forwards in the air between some chords for no reason. It’s better to keep it in position

Not the bouree I was expecting but I gladly watched this quality playing right to the end.
His tone and control is beyond this world
One of my favourite Bach pieces, one of best interpretations I've heard.
Very clean. Excellent.
Superbly enchanting. Alan recommended well.
What a fantastic player. A fluent and magical performance.
Outstanding as always Mr Ryan. What a superb player and musician.

Bach is hard on guitar, but worthwhile
Existen dos partituras diferentes de le bourre de bach? por favor dígame alguien cómo diferenciarlas, saludos y gracias.
Very enjoyable! Try Andrei Krylov to make your eyes moist
would be nice to identify this piece I think it's from Bach Violin Partita #1 and is in A minor.
Its in B minor. He's playing the violin part with occasional extra bass notes.

Nice phrasing and dynamics too. Thanks for sharing.
It's an English made guitar but for the life of me I can't remember which luthier

Well, thanks for sharing... it's really a beautiful interpretation on a wonderful instrument.. Cheers!

Thanks for the additional info. Have a nice Xmas and a good start to the new year. 2017
Good performance for sure Gary but a bit too fast.
a liitle bit too fast, isn't it? the original bmv 1002 is not that fast.
I've seen a BMW that goes much faster.
Guitar Allah
Expedite tempo
But can he play smoke on the water?
Relax man you're trying to hard.....
Wrong key. Not even close.
