About Modern Family:
The family at the center of “Modern Family” is headed by Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill), who is now married to his second wife, the young, gorgeous Gloria (Sofía Vergara), assumed by some to be his daughter. In their loving care is Gloria’s daydreaming son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Jay’s driven daughter, Claire (Julie Bowen), and her real estate agent husband, Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), want an open, healthy relationship with their three kids, which isn’t always easy.
Their oldest daughter, Haley (Sarah Hyland), grows up a little too fast. Middle child, Alex (Ariel Winter), is a too-smart-for-her-own-good daughter, and the youngest, Luke (Nolan Gould), is a rambunctious son. Where Phil wants to be the “cool dad,” Claire is determined to keep her kids from walking in the wayward footsteps of her younger days.
Jay’s very serious son, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and his gregarious husband, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), become doting parents to Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), the sweet Vietnamese girl they adopt. Though life isn’t always tidy, politically correct, or predictable, it’s always loving, heartwarming, and hilarious for this blended, extended-and truly modern-family.

Mitchell totally let Clair dangle in the wind rather than admit he had the same thought.
Claire ended up getting thrown under the bus because she was silly enough to talk smack to a 10 year old 😂 Why should Mitchell dive into the gutter with her when he was at least smart enough to voice his concerns in the right place and right time (or not at all)?

I don't blame Claire for initially thinking Gloria could be a gold digger before getting to know her. I do, however, blame Claire for gossiping about her behind her back and especially in front of the kids. You don't choose how you feel but you do choose how you react to those feelings.
Good reminder to avoid saying things in front of the children 😂

This show is the golden classic 🤌years and years after the lines still make me laugh
Funny how serious and down to Earth Jay was in the early seasons but he slowly turned into an “Al Bundy with money” goofball.
I think Gloria was just getting him to loosen up a lot, but he also started getting different priorities as he got older.
And THIS is why you don’t tell your secret thoughts to your kids. 😂
Let's not forget that Jay saw Gloria's sister but Gloria wanted a good life and went over her sister to get Jay
So Claire's opinion os 100% valid and kinda true, even if Gloria actually loves Jay now
Does she though? I've seen every episode and it seems like she just tolerates Jay.
watch it again. she's in love with him @@enjoyitbro
Meh, the old Man is not stupid, he also wants a beautiful and young woman young enough to be his daughter. These kind of relationships both use each other. Its all mutual.
Jay is not stupid. Why else would a beautiful young woman want a man her dads age? Notice He paid attention to a young nice looking woman (gloria sister) not a woman his age and average. He gets a young fun hot wife his daughter age to play with and care for him, she gets someone to provide for her and security. Both happy. Dont see the problem. And both things can be true, they use each other and grew to Like/love each other.

I love Gloria. But……she was a single Mom with a child, she was poor and she’s from a foreign country. She’s beautiful!!! Look at Jay. He’s rich, old and not especially handsome. Of course Claire is going to suspect her of being a gold digger
Gloria was a hair dresser, she is beautiful & would have been succesful.
@@kittygranollers6232 That’s how I thought Claire would view her and be skeptical. I love Gloria!!
Didn’t she had a company or something ?
@@Milkiiayeah she had a pretty successful company i think hot sauce
Dont see what the problem is. Jay is not stupid, he could go for an average plain upper middle class woman his age, but he wanted a young hot fun thing his daughter age to have fun with. They are both using each other. She gets security, he gets a young hot caretaker to play with. Everyone is happy. These kind of relationships both using each other and they are mutually beneficial. Plus both things can be true, they using each other and grew to Like each other.
Gloria worked hard throughout her life , she worked at a moving business & if a friend had to move again for the 69th or 70th time she would probably be the first one to help, I earned my golden shovel and my kids deserve a Dad , need a Dad . She made a good choice for the Dad Manny needed
Every character is so well prepared for this scene
2:33 Poor Manny must be having a conflicting hard time....
Claire was right, Gloria did come into Jay's life with the same intention as a gold-digger. Jay had actually fallen for Gloria's sister first. Gloria swooped in and took a shot.
When you get used to the later seasons the kids are so small!
I mean, she shouldn´t have made those comments in front of her kids but Claire wasn´t wrong on her suspicions. A young beautiful Latin woman with a kid living in a bad neighborhood being interested in a rich old man is suspicious. She was just looking out for her dad.
I didn’t give this show a chance when it was new. Now I’m hooked. Philarious!
We can learn so much from children. 😂
Clair's concern was natural and i think that is how everyone would react at the first impression. even Gloria can't deny money didn't have any to do with the relationship. her mistake was saying it in front of her kid
Phill peacefully and calmly drops... Sweetheart you Heard It wrong, its Gold diger 😂😂😂
1:16 i am feeling a hug 🤣
If she had just said she had felt unsure about her when they first met, I think there would have been less of a fight.
Ok I know this is played ip for laughs but Clare is dead ass wrong to say those things in front of her kids
The first thing I thought of “mom what’s a cold digger?
No it’s not crazy, it’s how I feel! That’s why I love Gloria so much!
I am so glad there's no Phil in my family. Who knows what he'd say about me in front of family?
I wonder if Mitch ever heard Claire saying that Gloria was a gold digger
It was a valid concern for Claire, messed up to say around the children of course, but a hot woman her age marrying her old and rich father? C'mon it is not rocket science. Gloria shows it later that it was not the case and Claire sees that, it was a nice character arc.

Cam turns out to be very needy, drama queen...
Gloria ruined her sister's life and is not even sorry.
RANDOM FACT: Julie Bowen was pregnant at the time when Modern Family first premiered. and although the directors and producers did a damn good job in hiding that, in 0:14 we can clearly see that.
I thought it was just episode one
This is why you don't say crap around your children
My mom and my sister😂😂😂
Honestly I can’t blame Claire for jumping to that conclusion
1:19 Phil 😂😂😂
Phil instigates a lot but Claire seemed jealous
Never share your secret thoughts with anyone, and even less if they concern your views on someone else. Clare’s concerns were legitimate, but they weren’t to be shared; she should have kept them to herself. It’s beyond obvious that Gloria got with Jay (a much older, overweight man) to improve her and her son’s life, that goes without having to say. But so what, Jay also got a hot, young wife out of it. These types of relationships are transactional, so both parties win. The last thing one wants to do is opinionate, it’s their life and what works for them. The problem is that an older daughter like Clare would be concerned with her inheritance, and that’s the real crux of the matter. But then again a simple conversation with dad about protecting his assets would have sufficed.
"I'm gonna have to call you back" hahahah
Of course only Glória was judged. Shes a woman. But her father, who was looking for a hot young woman instead of a woman of his age, which would be more appropriate, was not even mentioned on Claires judgment. That's a reflection of how much chauvinism is settled in our society.
Why should men only be interested in women their own age? Imagine if it was only appropriate for women to look for men their own height, who make the same income as them, who have the same strength as them, who have the same social status as them, etc.
@@Milktube that's what I do.

@youreallthesame1594 yeah, I'm also tired of race comments.
@@dinahnascimento everything is racist and sexist to you. 🥱
As someone who is now in the same position as Claire (my dad remarried and she's only a few months older than me and is younger than my older sister) I absolutely understand Claire's concern. I know she's not a gold digger now but it also didn't help that my dad kept her a secret until two weeks before he brought her to america lol
She was a gold digger lol In no world does that women marry that man without money or being sold
Did Claire ever confront Jay or accuse him for picking a woman based off youth and beauty? It's funny how easy it is to call a woman a "gold digger" while ignoring the fact that these men are sexualizing and using the women.
This has nothing to do with sexes lol. Jay is her father while Gloria was a stranger dating her much older, rich father & trying to be a part of the family. It's normal for her to judge her first than Jay. Switch things around & she'd definitely judge him first if he's in Gloria's place, trying to date her mom.
oh no... how dare he find her attractive! Also fun and vivacious and... fiery? Spicy?
Point is, it's not always about looks and or money.
@@resurgingflame not for nothing, look at her and look at Jay. If you think a chick like her would find someone like Jay physically attractive then you're nuts. The point is, it was a mutually beneficial pairing. Jay got an attractive woman that he would have never been able to get unless he had money. So win for him. Gloria got a wealthy husband who gave her a really good life of financial freedom when there is no other possible way she could have attained that on her own. So win for her. It's a win win situation. And Jay is a shrewd businessman. He wasn't being taken advantage of. Gloria is a street smart worldly woman. So she wasn't being taken advantage of either. Claire had no business entering her opinion into it. Now if Jay was delirious or suffered dementia or was dying or in hospice and someone showed up, THEN Claire would have had a right to step in. But in this case she was out of bounds.
@@SunGawdRa oh no, how dare a woman growing up in impoverished conditions seek out someone who can give her and her son a better life. They both benefitted from this relationship. Jay got a hottie...and looks are extremely important to men. Gloria got someone who gave her a better life. And financial freedom is extremely important to women. So again, Claire had no right interfering with their relationship.

"This is why we sweep things out of the rug. So people don't get hurt"
This line right here is when Jay separates himself from the boomer "leave me alone i wanna watch tv" trope.
During the episode he looks like he doesn't really care Gloria and Claire are tense with each other and that he only wants to see his football game; and, while it may be partially true, he values peace in his family. I think both him and Phil have a point, they have to clear the tension by talking about it, but Phil went to the other extreme and pushed Claire into reconciliate with Gloria when she wasn't ready yet to do so.
I love that several seasons later it's Gloria who falsely accuses someone of being a golddigger
Claire did have a lot of subtle racist moments when it came to Gloria. the gold digger comment, her making fun of her accent (on more than one account), and later on we find out she called deportation on Gloria when she started dating Jay.
She thinking she was a gold digger has nothing to do with race 🤦♂️. It’s because she’s hot and his father is rich and well, just a normal overweight old man.
@@bandito241 good point, the rest is still true
It's more like being an ageist mixed with a dash of xenophobia triggered because she had a meltdown over being daddy's favorite.
@@freyja6360 still doesn’t excuse her actions. calling deportation is extreme, especially with Manny. if Gloria wasn’t on a green card, Claire would have been responsible for Gloria getting kicked out of the country and her son ending up in foster care potentially before his father (and thats a big maybe) got to him.
