Right mine I bought in January and I still fly it everyday . Both the 5 and seven inch surprisingly have become my most reliable quads and cost was crazy cheap . I couldn’t even build one that cheap
A friend of mine that's new to the hobby picked up the Walksnail version recently - I was pretty impressed for what it cost! One thing that struck me as really odd was that the FC isn't actually mounted on gummies, it is sandwiched between blue silicone spacers (which is close but not quite the same). I helped him redo the stack with proper gummies and metal locknuts on the very bottom and top of the stack screws. We also updated the ESCs to BlueJay and turned on RPM filtering and dynamic idle and loaded the SupaFly 5" preset. I also gave him a set of HQ V2S props. Between all that it got rid of most of the chugging/grinding noise it randomly makes, and flies great. The Walksnail VTX is in the way back section, and of course has a completely different camera than yours had. Oh, and I did have to laugh a bit when I saw the ELRS receiver was zip-tied to the big ESC capacitor. All in all a really good starter/basher.
Haha perfect timing considering I asked a question about this quad yesterday on stream. My Darwin 240 has been great! Edit: Ended up updating mine with betaflight 4.4, swapped the props for PB&J's, and swapped the vtx/camera with a caddx vista. It only comes in 4s that's why I was asking about 6s on 2400kv via motor limit yesterday.
I don't have a bind n fly, but I've been very happy with their electronic hardware. Also, I LOVE those connectors they send where you have to insert your own wires!! Yeah, sometimes you have to solder them to other wires from another connector, but I'm often mixing and matching hardware. When it comes to which order they're in, especially ESC-FC ...cur/nc/1234/vcc/gnd....are rarely in the same order, but if you buy just an FC or ESC from Darwin they send you several of those connectors, 3/4/ and 5 pin, and a whole bunch of individual wires, so you can make your own customized harness.
You can use 4S or 6S LIPOS on this with pretty the same performance... From what I've read from comments on RUclips, it is possible to set Betaflight so that if the FC detects a 6S battery, the FC will open the throttle up to 67%, if the FC detects a 4S battery, the FC open the throttle up to 100%. I would suggest you buy small 4S batteries for a 3.5 to 4 inch, and 6S batteries for the J5. You can use both on the J5 until one motor breaks down. Then buy 6S motors.
DarwinFPV make some good stuff. I've got custom build 5" race drones, big 12" cinelifters, micros, etc, but one of my favourites to just rip about is my DarwinFPV Baby Ape V2. Even with just the 2S on it, but throw a 3S on it and it is insane.
I've been building long-range fixed wing UAV aircraft, and I've been thinking about getting my first FPV drone. I think I'll get the Baby Ape, as the reviews are really good, it's tiny and can be flown pretty much anywhere, and it's really cheap.
It cool but on the website you cant offer thing from the frame like only a arm you only can offer the hole frame etc. Why i can not buy thing like the under plate etc. ????
I have this quad fly it every day and believe it or not it has become my main dependable drone . I replaced the cam with run cam 2 Phoenix Jb edition . That’s about it and some tuning it flys great even on 4s 1500mah batteries . 🤷♂️ not to shabby with crossfire go pro mount sucked and snapped off so I got a fixed angle mount and it is solid now great platform for learning and upgrades .
I have a Tyro129 7" that I purchased back in the day. I also have a Tyro 79. The Tyro's were sold by Eachine. The frame design of the Dawin240 is not exactly the same as my 129 but it is very similar in a lot of respects. The flight stack looks to me to be identical. The camera that came with the 129 kit was total junk, the same that you have found to be true with the Darwin. I replaced my with one from Caddx. I did get RPM filtering /Bidirectional Dshot working by installing bluejay firmware and as you indicated I had to change the gyro rate from 8K to 4K to get it all to work. So while the Darwin240 may not be an exact copy of the Tyro's of the past it seems to be pretty darn close.
I actually ended up losing the 1st one i got. i then got a 2nd with elrs and i love em. flies well for a beginner 5in. ive made some decent footage and it flies good for the price. im going to purchase the 7in next. i also have the cineape25. the babyape is what got me started.
Why do I think DarwinFPV is the former Eachine? Looking at the blue, 3-star bell on the motors´from the TS215, the VTX layout and the brightish carbon fiber, the old Johnny's Astrox frame design before he went to QAV, oh, and the NARROW 2.8mm camera lens from the firsts Wizards.
Darwinfpv is cool. I do love the baby ape, I just wish they would have went a tiiiiny bit more on the motors as they do break incredibly easy and I have swapped 3 now
Motors were my biggest issue with the babyape, and since the mounting holes aren't a standard pattern, you can't upgrade the motors without drilling out an arm every time you break one. Ended up putting all the electronics on a tp3 with new motors
I own nice quads, I own Darwin quads, they are not bad, except for the cameras. Every time I buy one. I order a camera with it, LOL. Step it up Darwin! Good video JB been waiting for your opinion on this one. I use it for my basher, Johnny 240 is pretty tough.
I have the 129 7 inch as well both fly great just needs new camera on both the 240 and 129 . Parts and prints are hard to find other than motors and stacks but fly decent . No frill just fun easy flight’s
I mean as a person who builds his own quad (15+ quads built) i see this as something I could just buy and trash around, rather than my expensive $300+ quad. And for me, it's still interesting. Now if this quad have bluetooth connection to beta flight then that's another+ because none of my built quads have that feature.
Run cam Phoenix 2 Jb edition is a great replacement cam for these I put them on both the 240 and 129. Big improvements definitely have to replace the cam it’s janky out the box for sure
Started off with a Tyro 129 and got myself the Darwin Fpv cineape 25 which is still a good Quad. I wished I had bought the Walksnail + Elrs combo, but I was a early bird which catched the Analog + Elrs. Will try to convert it to Walksnail.
60$ speedybee f405 stack 20$ speedybee 800mw vtx 30$ TBS source one 5`frame 20$ foxeer micro camera 60$ emax 2207 or tmotor velox = 190 $ for a DIY build. Cheapest good components I can come up with. Unfortunatly this darwinfpv is 4S and no option for me today.
That sounds good. But only if you can buy all these parts or alternative parts in one shop, with some low shipping costs or free shipping. It surprises me though. Because many reviews always say the J5 or Nazgul V3 is more expensive if you buy all parts individually...
+15 for receiver, but that stack is rock solid, I have one that I need to throw bluejay on and make it even better, but especially with a low resonance frame like the AOS, it's crazy what that thing can do
@@Nathan-qt2zi So you fly 6S on these oroginal 4S 2400 kV motors ? 🤣 Actually I burned all of my motors by activating 3D and BD-DShot. I also did a video about that. I had the chance to switch to 6S with buying 6S motors. But i decided to stay at 4S just because I can't affort a second 6S drone and new lipos at the moment. I have a second 4S drone. I want always 2 drones of the same S number. Because if you damage your drone you can still discharge your lipos with your second drone...
Get a 3D print for a GPS, toss on a 4s lion and you have a semi-disposable long range 5". 1W vtx, a frame that isn't horribly heavy, zero build time, and if it doesn't make it home you won't cry about it. Wonder if inav has a target for it...
I haven’t moved on with the times. I still fly 4s and taranis on analog. That’s where I’ll stay tho as I can’t freestyle or race. So I’ll stay back in the day with Charpu lol
I still have a nazgul v1. I have 6 other builds for some stupid reason i just prefer that old 4s nazgul over my newer lighter/more powerfull builds. The high kv motors are battery killers but man is that quad smooth for some reason
In the second test did you use a digital module? the interference is zero. I put another analog camera on my Darwin and it looks much better but the interference is the same. I don't know, Rick! What kind of witchcraft did you do?
Hello Sir, I have a question. I have a mamba f405 mk 2, but the processor in it got corrupted and I changed it, but the problem is the black box no longer exists and it shows me in the program, no data ship found. Are there any solutions??
Does the 55A esc give it any advantage? I bought it because both my Nagul v3 4s and my Roma 6s have 45a escs. I thought this one might be a little faster.
It’s fast depending on what your pids throttle and tape of lipo id put a six s and just limit the throttle a little and put a nice pid tune on it I find with full go pro my p and d gain and balance had to adjust slightly on the sliders . It connects to speedy bee app as well wich is cool in the field for tuning or adjusting

I am sorry I have to say it for the people in Europe. I will take Remote ID over the prices that you guys get in the US. JB just said that you can buy the Nazgul V3 for 100 more. Assuming around the 330 Dollars range.... I bought my Nazgul V3 WITH A VISTA, for 481 euros (and an ELRS receiver).... Give me these prices and availability and I will take the remote ID with me. Jesus christ the prices always make me sad to my core. not even taking into account that the dollar is weaker than the Euro which makes the case even worst. Sorry don't wanna rant. Love you JB, keep up the good work. Just wanted to show you the other side of things guys and I am pretty sure remote ID is coming to our side of the fence as well :/
Haha yeah, I was all ready for the comparison and then... gopro footage from there out. Hope that doesn't confuse new pilots thinking they'll get digital quality by a simple camera upgrade.
I get that it a great bargain to start, but all my club mates and myself have had longevity issues with Darwin drones. The 5v rail.dies easy, some blew on first fight. Vtxs fry easy, so wasn't surprised to see it didn't set correctly. Have to say, I wouldn't recommend them, even at that price. You'll soon be spending the extra $150 bucks to fix it and replace faulty parts that could have bought a better quad. Please JB, let us know how long that one lasts flight wise. Oh and 6s will melt that esc quite quickly too.
The motors are semi-generic rebranded motors used for other rc purposes. The shafts are removable so you can invert them and run the motor inboard as opposed to outboard. Plenty of incredibly high performance and high wear motors for other hobbies still work this way. Just sayin
I destroyed my motors (Enable 3D and BD-Dshot, i have a vid too). Nevertheless I decided to buy new motors in 4S and not 6S. Since I already have a 5" 4S ultralight drone and now the 4S batteries. And I can't afford a second 6S drone with new batteries at the moment. I always want to have 2 drones with the same S number, so if I start with 8 charged batteries, for example, I destroy the drone at first flights, I still have the second drone to discharge the batteries. Discharging the batteries on the charger is just super annoying and the charging cycle that reduces the lifespan of the battery is then lost... But in the long term I will probably convert it into a 6S drone... If I got a new (an than second) 5" 6S standard freestyle drone...
So the camera reminds me fo the x220 eachine...i never knew why it was SO hard for me to learn to fly until i got a camera with a wider FOV. annoying af.
WILL DJI ever put an onboard mic ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? hearing the sound of your motors is a must for freestyle ,, Rush tank with AKG mic is insane ,, coming out of any kind of trick super smooth by hearing your motors , once you fly with a mic its hard to go back !!!! the Analog Phoenix 2 and 2 se line is the best for cheap analog , Digital needs onboard sound !! Period !! Flying DJI with no sound sucks !!!!!!!!
Hey JB does anyone make I'm sure they do a camera and transmitter that I can attach to an existing drone for fpv to my phone. Analog is fine. Low-latency is important.
Widescreen FPV yes I remember 😂 I was one of those who bought a fatshark dominator V3 with a Runcam Eagle 16:9 cam, was a pretty decent setup but I liked 4:3 more in the end with the HD2.
I may have finally found the cheapest way for me to keep my analog goggles and 4s packs but still move up to 5". I only have one concern... is 4s 850 too small of a pack for a 5" size quad?
So they have a lot of old frames,fc's,esc's,vtx and motors. They are just getting rid of old stuff they have in a warehouse. That's good for people just getting started.
I agree. The probability of destroying your drones as a beginner is much higher than for an experienced pilots. That's why I think beginners should always buy the cheapest first...
Yeah if you could afford the V3 then that's a much better quad. This is just a great beginner quad for learning and if you're struggling to justify spending 250.

Find the pilots around you friend. And they will likely get you in the air. I generally set up at least 5 people a year, 90% of the time kids, for the past couple of years. And many of my friends do the same… or at least help with some parts. This is a very welcoming community, make friends, even if you have nothing.
I bought it 2 months ago. I even think 16:9 is good because of my glasses with an 800x480 display. I bought a Caddx Ratel 2 for it because I just want the best. 2 things I don't like. You can't update Beaflight because you don't know the exact target (There are different kind of the same FC...). And the installed ELRS receiver does not have a model name and the information is nowhere to be found. But as far as I know you need the model name if you want to update ELRS. I may be able to solve these problems by contacting Darwinfpv and get the right informations. It's on my to-do list... I will convert it to 6S as soon as I have a 2nd 6S copter. And use the 4S batteries I bought, on my 4 and 5 inch ultralight copters. Today I would still rather go for the Nazgul. It's only slightly more expensive but gets BLHeli32 ESC (With BD-DShot) and more powerful VTX and probably also higher quality hardware overall and probably better settings and support. It's supposed to be very good... PS: I have burned and damaged all my motors of it by activating 3D mode and BD-Dshot...
@@Nathan-qt2zi I don't think the included receiver actually is the betafpv 2400 rx, it just uses the betafpv 2400 rx ELRS target when flashing it. This gave me some confusion when I first got mine. The antenna looks the same but the board is different.
On D240 Johnny5, has anyone managed to update to Betaflight higher than 4.1 without errors ? Because the manufacturer gives the target MATEKF405, but there are only different targets MATEKF405XXXX that you can select. And if you generally supposedly select a false target, problems or even damage can arise. I couldn't find out which of these XXXX is the right one. Apparently the FC is a production especially for DarwinFPV and not a standard model from MATEK... I guess I'll have to contact DarwinFPV about it at some point... Is on my to-do list...
I used MatekF405STD_CLONE to get it to work on 4.4. I had to jump some hoops to get it working but it's probably fixed now considering this was about 4 months ago.

I buyed the Caddx Ratel 2 (not the Baby Ratel). Many people say it is the best analog cam. But yeah it is pretty 150-200% more expensive as the standard cam...
I bet you had the 6dbi attenuation still set on your power meter from when you had your attenuator on it on you last video about it :) I dont believe that vtx will do over 1W and be so far off when set to 25mW
@@JoshuaBardwell Hm mine doesn't show it on the main screen when I set up attenuation in the menu.. and when I connect it to a 25mW vtx and set up a 6dbi attenuation in the menu I do get close to a 200mW reading.
Could I really run 6s on this kwad if I select motor output limits to 66%? Or is there any other downside? I would upgrade to 6s 1800kv when the motors burn.
yes. AS far as I know FC and ESC can handle 6S. The motors have 4S spec. So you can run 6S batteries on it with that 66% mod. But there is even someone here in the comments who claims using 6S on these 4S motors without any problems. 😂
@@spunktr Ich hab mir 5x T-Motor Velox 2207 2550 KV Motoren geholt weil ich erst mal auf 4S bleiben möchte, weil ich will immer 2x Drohnen haben mit gleicher S-Anzahl. Eine weitere 5" Drohne und neue 6S Akkus kann ich mir momentan nicht leisten. Aber 2550/2400 * 4/6 = 71%. Wenn du auf 71& einstellst wäre so als würdest du 2550kV 4S fliegen... Könnte halt nur sein dass die Motoren leicht zu warm werden...

on beta flight there is not the right FC target .... i also dont know which i must choose ????????

I've got a darwinfpv 129 and thats the exact same stack as in the 129 just put into a different frame. Even the flight controller layout is identical.

Get a 3D print for a GPS, toss on a 4s lion and you have a semi-disposable long range 5". 1W vtx, a frame that isn't horribly heavy, zero build time, and if it doesn't make it home you won't cry about it. Wonder if inav has a target for it...
I haven’t moved on with the times. I still fly 4s and taranis on analog. That’s where I’ll stay tho as I can’t freestyle or race. So I’ll stay back in the day with Charpu lol

I still have a nazgul v1. I have 6 other builds for some stupid reason i just prefer that old 4s nazgul over my newer lighter/more powerfull builds. The high kv motors are battery killers but man is that quad smooth for some reason
In the second test did you use a digital module? the interference is zero. I put another analog camera on my Darwin and it looks much better but the interference is the same. I don't know, Rick!

Hello Sir, I have a question. I have a mamba f405 mk 2, but the processor in it got corrupted and I changed it, but the problem is the black box no longer exists and it shows me in the program, no data ship found. Are there any solutions??

Does the 55A esc give it any advantage? I bought it because both my Nagul v3 4s and my Roma 6s have 45a escs. I thought this one might be a little faster.
It’s fast depending on what your pids throttle and tape of lipo id put a six s and just limit the throttle a little and put a nice pid tune on it I find with full go pro my p and d gain and balance had to adjust slightly on the sliders . It connects to speedy bee app as well wich is cool in the field for tuning or adjusting

I am sorry I have to say it for the people in Europe. I will take Remote ID over the prices that you guys get in the US. JB just said that you can buy the Nazgul V3 for 100 more. Assuming around the 330 Dollars range.... I bought my Nazgul V3 WITH A VISTA, for 481 euros (and an ELRS receiver).... Give me these prices and availability and I will take the remote ID with me. Jesus christ the prices always make me sad to my core. not even taking into account that the dollar is weaker than the Euro which makes the case even worst.

I put the run cam 2 phoenix Jb edition on all my Darwin’s and it looks great . The cameras that come are janky . Definitely a world of difference

I get that it a great bargain to start, but all my club mates and myself have had longevity issues with Darwin drones.
The 5v rail.dies easy, some blew on first fight. Vtxs fry easy, so wasn't surprised to see it didn't set correctly.
Have to say, I wouldn't recommend them, even at that price.
You'll soon be spending the extra $150 bucks to fix it and replace faulty parts that could have bought a better quad.
Please JB, let us know how long that one lasts flight wise.
Oh and 6s will melt that esc quite quickly too.

The motors are semi-generic rebranded motors used for other rc purposes. The shafts are removable so you can invert them and run the motor inboard as opposed to outboard.
Plenty of incredibly high performance and high wear motors for other hobbies still work this way.

I destroyed my motors (Enable 3D and BD-Dshot, i have a vid too). Nevertheless I decided to buy new motors in 4S and not 6S. Since I already have a 5" 4S ultralight drone and now the 4S batteries.
And I can't afford a second 6S drone with new batteries at the moment. I always want to have 2 drones with the same S number, so if I start with 8 charged batteries, for example, I destroy the drone at first flights, I still have the second drone to discharge the batteries.
Discharging the batteries on the charger is just super annoying and the charging cycle that reduces the lifespan of the battery is then lost...
But in the long term I will probably convert it into a 6S drone... If I got a new (an than second) 5" 6S standard freestyle drone...
So the camera reminds me fo the x220 eachine...i never knew why it was SO hard for me to learn to fly until i got a camera with a wider FOV. annoying af.
WILL DJI ever put an onboard mic ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? hearing the sound of your motors is a must for freestyle ,, Rush tank with AKG mic is insane ,, coming out of any kind of trick super smooth by hearing your motors , once you fly with a mic its hard to go back !!!! the Analog Phoenix 2 and 2 se line is the best for cheap analog , Digital needs onboard sound !! Period !! Flying DJI with no sound sucks !!!!!!!!

Widescreen FPV yes I remember 😂 I was one of those who bought a fatshark dominator V3 with a Runcam Eagle 16:9 cam, was a pretty decent setup but I liked 4:3 more in the end with the HD2.
I may have finally found the cheapest way for me to keep my analog goggles and 4s packs but still move up to 5". I only have one concern... is 4s 850 too small of a pack for a 5" size quad?
buy a second one exactly the same. than after full charge you can connect them with parallel 2x xt30 to 1x xt60.

So they have a lot of old frames,fc's,esc's,vtx and motors. They are just getting rid of old stuff they have in a warehouse. That's good for people just getting started.
I agree. The probability of destroying your drones as a beginner is much higher than for an experienced pilots. That's why I think beginners should always buy the cheapest first...

I just got the nazgul5 v3 as my first quad. I did not consider this as an option at the time but I'm liking the v3 a lot.
Yeah if you could afford the V3 then that's a much better quad. This is just a great beginner quad for learning and if you're struggling to justify spending 250.

I generally set up at least 5 people a year, 90% of the time kids, for the past couple of years. And many of my friends do the same… or at least help with some parts.

I bought it 2 months ago. I even think 16:9 is good because of my glasses with an 800x480 display. I bought a Caddx Ratel 2 for it because I just want the best.
2 things I don't like. You can't update Beaflight because you don't know the exact target (There are different kind of the same FC...). And the installed ELRS receiver does not have a model name and the information is nowhere to be found. But as far as I know you need the model name if you want to update ELRS. I may be able to solve these problems by contacting Darwinfpv and get the right informations. It's on my to-do list...
I will convert it to 6S as soon as I have a 2nd 6S copter. And use the 4S batteries I bought, on my 4 and 5 inch ultralight copters.
Today I would still rather go for the Nazgul. It's only slightly more expensive but gets BLHeli32 ESC (With BD-DShot) and more powerful VTX and probably also higher quality hardware overall and probably better settings and support. It's supposed to be very good...
PS: I have burned and damaged all my motors of it by activating 3D mode and BD-Dshot...
The elrs receiver is called betafpv 2400 rx
@@Nathan-qt2zi I don't think the included receiver actually is the betafpv 2400 rx, it just uses the betafpv 2400 rx ELRS target when flashing it. This gave me some confusion when I first got mine. The antenna looks the same but the board is different.

On D240 Johnny5, has anyone managed to update to Betaflight higher than 4.1 without errors ? Because the manufacturer gives the target MATEKF405, but there are only different targets MATEKF405XXXX that you can select. And if you generally supposedly select a false target, problems or even damage can arise. I couldn't find out which of these XXXX is the right one. Apparently the FC is a production especially for DarwinFPV and not a standard model from MATEK... I guess I'll have to contact DarwinFPV about it at some point... Is on my to-do list...

I used MatekF405STD_CLONE to get it to work on 4.4. I had to jump some hoops to get it working but it's probably fixed now considering this was about 4 months ago.

I bet you had the 6dbi attenuation still set on your power meter from when you had your attenuator on it on you last video about it :) I dont believe that vtx will do over 1W and be so far off when set to 25mW

@@JoshuaBardwell Hm mine doesn't show it on the main screen when I set up attenuation in the menu.. and when I connect it to a 25mW vtx and set up a 6dbi attenuation in the menu I do get close to a 200mW reading.
Could I really run 6s on this kwad if I select motor output limits to 66%? Or is there any other downside? I would upgrade to 6s 1800kv when the motors burn.
yes. AS far as I know FC and ESC can handle 6S. The motors have 4S spec. So you can run 6S batteries on it with that 66% mod. But there is even someone here in the comments who claims using 6S on these 4S motors without any problems. 😂

@@spunktr Ich hab mir 5x T-Motor Velox 2207 2550 KV Motoren geholt weil ich erst mal auf 4S bleiben möchte, weil ich will immer 2x Drohnen haben mit gleicher S-Anzahl. Eine weitere 5" Drohne und neue 6S Akkus kann ich mir momentan nicht leisten. Aber 2550/2400 * 4/6 = 71%. Wenn du auf 71& einstellst wäre so als würdest du 2550kV 4S fliegen... Könnte halt nur sein dass die Motoren leicht zu warm werden...
