Planting Onions in Raised Beds! Onion Sets, Onion Starts, and a Few Garlic Bulbs

Today we are planting out our onions in raised beds! There are 3 ways to plant onions, and I am doing 2 of them today: by sets and by starts. My research has taught me that onion starts, aka dormant onion plants, are the easiest and most successful method of growing onions at home. Also, trying to get some garlic in the soil as early as possible. While typically sown in the Fall, I have my fingers crossed we get some nice garlic bulbs this season!
Great resources and online retailers to purchase onion starts (or onion plants): Dixondale Farms, Gurney's, Johnny's Select Seed, and Territorial Seed Company. You can also find them at your local Home Depot. Look for onion sets at your local garden centers, small grocery stores, as well as Home Depot and Lowe's.

You can forget about using the bagged bulbs for stored onions. They will bolt . The onion will be tough and have very little shelf life.

Next year start your onion seeds in a foil pan with some soil and you should make out alot better. Winter sowing depends sometimes on the weather as to what is successful and what is not. Experience is always the best teacher. Advice is good from others to get ideas on how to garden. But no one's soil is the same. You will learn what's best for you and your garden.
