  • Planting garlic in raised beds for beginner backyard vegetable gardeners is the straight forward and easy reference you need if you're interested in growing garlic at home. I'm fall planting both hard and softneck varieties to see how they overwinter in my zone 6 backyard garden.
Elaborating about companion plantings and plants to avoid when planting:
Garlic does really well next to: cole crops like broccoli, cauliflower and kale, carrots, onions, and tomatoes. But, for peas and beans, avoid planting garlic too close.
I used Garlic Gods this year for my garlic order. But, there are plenty of retailers who are still offering a selection of garlic for fall. Just be sure to check your local growing suggestions and first frost dates to ensure successful growing conditions.

I grew garlic for first time this year. I ordered my bulbs from Keene Organic based in Wisconsin. They recommended soaking the garlic cloves in water with a liquid fertilizer (I used one w/ bat guano or something natural) and rubbing alcohol. 😱
My yield was not 💯 and the bulbs went from marble to full-size bulbs. I still have many and will take the largest ones and try again. I'm not going to bother w/ soaking them, but I highly recommend fertilizing the soil at planting and in spring.
Interesting to note, that bed had almost no critter activity except to mess with the straw mulch a bit. A neighboring raised bed became their nest for our long snowy MN winter. 🤢
In the spring, I kept thinking I messed up when I soaked the cloves, but eventually I saw green shoots. I think my straw may have been too thick because despite our hot summer weather, it was a good 10 degrees cooler under it. The green growth got really big. You may regret how close you arranged your cloves. I sauteed the scapes. Tasty, but oh my, they made me gassy. 😮
