The fact that Gohan was never even expected to become the main character of Cell saga is the biggest and most enjoyable plot twist in dbz. Like Trunks lost his master Gohan to the androids then even being more powerful than Gohan in his normal state and then he saw him become a Super Saiyan 2, to eradicate Cell and to protect his loved ones.
Like who expected this? Everyone probably expected Trunks or Goku to beat Cell but that plot twist was the greatest of all time.

Such a kind-hearted kid who didn't want to hurt anyone, but he saw that there was no other way to achieve justice but to give into his anger.
He finally found the strength that was inside him all along.

It's not just about powerups and transformations, it's the character story and struggles that lead them to those epic moments. It took a long time to reach this point, it was raw emotional event that gives something for adults as well as youngsters.
These things were lacking in later in the series and especially in Super. Some of them were epic in a way, but they always came too fast, felt unearned and poorly executed.
But in Gohan's case, everything matched and these moment will go down as one of the most epic things in anime history.
Let's hope for more professional and people who invest in the series and characters long term to provide equally amazing moments in the future.
That's because Toriyama was setting up for Goku to stay dead permanently and Gohan take over as main character. But people were simps for Goku and Gohan ended up getting the back burner. The one that never gets used, the one the decorative teakettle sits on (that also never gets used)

Yet I can say for a surety that by the power of Jesus Christs name I have literally defeated nearly all my spiritual enemies that had rule over my mind and heart. I am soon and so near to the end of once and for all having no enemies of my own mind that have suppressed my ability to connect to the Holy Spirit as one. And this song from Gohan here is a good theme to this war that's raging and rolling on. And hopefully soon I can help those else who seek the father's face by just casting out the demons in Jesus name. And then we all shall see him.

If Gohan ever unlocks something that’s somehow beyond his Ultimate Potential, I want this exact version to play. It’s a masterpiece.
mystic form uses all of his bodies latent powers. he can't exceed it, he can however improve his base power.
If I recall correctly, Old Kai said that the way he released Gohan's power was just a patch job, something to release enough to give him the power to beat Buu. So Gohan's potential may not have been fully realized yet.

I like the thought of Gohan crying during his transformation because he is always gentle yet he knows what hes about to do to cell.
I believe most of us love gohan at this time because he reminded us of ourselves. When this first aired we were around his age and we could relate to his power and emotional imbalance. Now, as we have seen him grow into an adult, we see how we ourselves have changed, and how we miss those powerful and emotionally impacting moments of our youth. At least that’s my hypothesis :p

That has to do with age and the fact you didn't had easy access to things. Today you can rewatch something over and over and see what you didn't see before.

Technically, Gohan has gotten much stronger since his fight with Cell. There's just one problem though and that's everyone going from solar system busters, like Cell, to multi-solar system busters in base form.
This is the fan’s own creation. The fans loved Goku so much at the time that Akira decided to bring him back instead of making Gohan the main character like he planned.
