Most guitar teachers are teaching about writing melodies this way:
''Find the key of your song, and use the scale of that same key to write your melody. For example, if the key if C Major, create your melody in the C Major scale''.
While this method allows you to play it safe and be certain that you will play all the right notes in your melody, it ends up creating melodies that are not telling a story or not going anywhere.
In this video, I show you my own method, which is to stop relying on the scale too much and start relying on the chords instead!
I will show you examples using the melody of my recent song Salvation as a case study (which you can find here: • Ambient Guitar Looping... )

One of the things that led me away from university was the music major students. They knew enough theory to make the most generic sounding songs. The theory seemed to limit them to a rule book and devastated any originality they may once have possessed.
I'm sure if someone were really well versed in music theory it can be a useful tool for composing- it is sad when it becomes a constraint and restricts expression.

Thanks, Jack, I appreciate that! I once had a ''counterpoint'' class at university. There were so many rules to follow in our assignments. It felt like there was only one possible answer as to where the note could go next. The following class, the teacher would review our music and say that our melodic lines were not very original. He would then give an example of his own, and proceed to explain for an hour why it was ok for him to break 9 of his own rules because these were ''exceptions that worked in this context''. Finally, he would spend another hour explaining all the next rules that we needed to follow for our next assignment. Rinse and repeat for a whole semester.

This was the missing link for me. I kept frustrating myself with that "stick to the scale" approach, wondering why nothing good ever comes out of it.

That’s awesome I really struggled with playing a emotional melody. Now I understand it it’s the mixture of arpeggios and transition to other accords and some filler scale notes to make the transition smooth. Absolutely awesome song btw

This is awesome! Hey question for you. So I'm writing a song right now that is using both major 7 and major 9 chords. Do you think, theoretically, it would be ok to add a major 9 sus4 chords in between, so that I can also write my melodies with the embellishment of the sus4?

You should be able to hear melodies when playing a progression. Other times, the melody needs to be worked out. It may not match the intended feel of the tune. How it's played may change the melody, too.

  • @JaysonT1

Can't you do the opposite and have the chords highlight the melody?

    • @AntoineMichaudGuitar
      @AntoineMichaudGuitar  Год назад +2

Yes totally! It's just a matter of which one did you write first: chords or melody? Then, you make the other one highlight the first.

  • @wheresallthezombies

    • @shashanksharma9551

  • @sT0RMY823

Thanks for the Video. But i would never create a melody line over a scale or something. It should come natuarl somehow and of course you have to create and stick to the melody of the chords... but only on scale i dont think it will be more emotional.

  •  4 месяца назад

Guitarists are so funny, none of you can write songs but pretend to be able to. If you want to know beautiful melodies, learn the violin or piano then. There are far more great composers in classical music. Guitars, played by kids is ok.
