  • Eugene Williams was a charismatic musician, singer, composer, and choir director, consumed in a tall slim frame, who dared to stretch boundaries in every aspect of his musical gifts.
Willie Thornton and his brother Jesse Williams (along with Eugene Williams and Lee Ida Brown-Campbell) organized a singing group which became known as “Lee Ida Brown-Campbell and The Williams Brothers”. This group of powerfully anointed singers became popular and began to tour the nation. One such invitation to perform came from the Late Reverend James Cleveland, founder of the Gospel Music Workshop of America.
Williams formed one of the first community choirs in Houston called Eugene Williams and The Houston Interdenominational Choir. His selflessness allowed him to create space, identify and feature other Gospel music giants and influencers. He and his choir gained national acclaim in 1975 after their performance of his arrangement of The Battle Hymn of the Republic at Gospel Music Workshop of America held in New York, NY at Madison Square Garden.
Williams was also a charter member of the Houston Mass Choir. Some of the other members of the Houston Chapter include Willie Thornton, Shirley Joiner, V. Michael McKay, Wilma Bivens, Alvin Dread, Jesse Williams, Lee Ida Brown Campbell, and Barbara McCloud.
Williams work with Lee Ida Brown and recordings on ABC and Songbird albums included: Somebody Bigger Than You And I, Seek Ye First The Kingdom and Work While It Is Day. This video includes the song "Battle Hymn of The Republic" with The Houston Interdenominational Choir.
