During the early morning hours of November 21, 1970 explosives placed under a replica of the Liberty Bell exploded with such power that it sent shards of the bell through the walls of the nearby City Hall of Portland, Oregon. This remarkably powerful explosion set off an investigation that never had much to go on and left law enforcement target the usual suspects; mainly fringe groups active in the city.
In this video I discuss the details of the attack as well as those considered potentially responsible for an event that remains unsolved to this day.

Excited for this one! As evidenced by my leaving this comment before finishing it. We're fairly new residents of Portland and I absolutely love your channel. We went to the waterfront yesterday and ended up roaming about downtown and Chinatown and such. I was so excited to spot the remnants of the old market block. I absolutely ran my dorky ass for those arches while my while asked a series of bewildered questions that were answered by "Steve the amateur historian told me about these!! They're cast iron! I'll show you the video!" 🤣

    Great video Steve!

Thanks you Steve. I’ve alway been intrigued by this story because I was born in Portland just a few hours after it happened.

I never knew this happened --- and I've lived in Oregon my entire 52 years!

Another great video Steve! I have become a fan of yours, both your old and new works are a fascinating watch. Keep up the good work, I look forward to your next new release :)

About a year later, there were a number of 18 wheeler trucks that were held in a yard near Marine Drive, that were destroyed by repeated bomb incidents. There was a few years around that time, when Portland had more bomb incidents per capita, than anywhere else in the US...

That generation is pretty much dead and berried "just another unsolved cold case 60's and 1970's"

Our City Hall has got to be one of the ugliest buildings downtown. Terrible architecture. If the janitor hadn't been inside, it could of been a great way to get rid of the old beast and build something more attractive.
