  • After gaining promotion to the Premier League, Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town have become the first team in more than a decade to gain back to back promotions from League One to reach the Premier League. In fact, since his appointment, McKenna has picked up more points than any other manager in England’s top 4 divisions. So how has the former Manchester United coach turned the Tractor Boys into one of the best teams in England?

    Just got back from my annual 2 week trip to the future. McKenna actually got the United job in the summer of 2024 and immediately initiated an aggressive forward press at the start of the new season. It worked for 30 minutes then all the players said fuck that its too hard. Never saw it again.

    I'm an Ipswich season ticket holder and this analysis is spot on. Most detailed I've seen. One thing missing if I am being pedantic is the impact of subs (regular use of 3 subs at a time) and amount of late goals. Subs particularly in the no.10 position have been crucial (for much of first half of the season Omari was a super sub, and then second half of the season, Sarmiento adopted the role).

    • @StatmanDave
      @StatmanDave  27 дней назад +20

    • @johnsmith-es7zk

      The subs have been awesome. Also McKenna's awareness of the opposition's tactics is amazing and he acts so quickly to make tactical changes and regain control of the game. When the fans see something on the pitch that needs dealing with McKenna is already sorting it out. We trust that man without question.

    Watched every minute of every game this season, one of the best breakdown’s I’ve seen. Hirst and Moore are generally central and actually very rarely drift out to the left side.
    Chaplin’s goal against Hull demonstrates that left hand side diamond perfectly with Luongo dropping in, combining with Harness and Davis.

    • @finleysolomon7163
      @finleysolomon7163 27 дней назад +3

      You're right about Moore but Hirst definitely drifts into wide areas more frequently for knock-ons/wide runs - an example that springs to mind is the 3rd goal against Hull (H) as well as his assist for Aluko's goal against Bristol rovers in the cup

  • @guitaringjarmin

    Great analysis. The Ipswich attack is incredible, proven by two seasons of being a top scoring side, even beating Leicester, Leeds, and Southampton tally who are recent prem teams. The only nervousness when entering the premier league is the shaky defence. Although good by championship standards, because Ipswich score so many goals, in the step up they will need a premier defence, at the moment they will be punished severely by top 6 teams, but McKenna is no fluke, so every faith he will sharpen all corners

    The only thing that I can contribute here is that the same was said about Vincent Kompany's Burnley a year ago... They were nailing it in the Championship, beating everyone handsomely, playing possession based football, sexy football etc... and when they came to the Prem League, they were the whipping boys... milking cows. The jump from the Championship to the PL is extremely high... too high for tiny clubs like Ipswich to survive...

    Why are so many people talking about managerial replacements post Fergie era when back then, and NO ONE talked about Sir Alex himself had placed lower than 10th in his first 4 years at Man Utd THREE times? Believe in the Process of Ten Hag.

    • @HezronHezronHezronHezron
      @HezronHezronHezronHezron 14 дней назад +10

      There's two things you're forgetting when bringing up Fergie in the early days. The Club and the Fanbase back then.
      The club was not the European juggernaut they were now and they were a far cry from the dazzling football they were once known for under Sir Matt Busby. Senior management at clubs were also alot more lenient with managers and gave them more time. Fergie even admits that FA cup win on his 2nd season literally saved him from being fired. Since then, the club has been transformed into a club obsessed with success.
      The fanbase has also changed alot. They didn't have the world wide appeal they have now. I became a United supporter as a kid because they were the best team in England. The fanbase has become so used to continually success. Trophies is the minimum requirement for us. Big name transfers is a minimum requirement for us. Good football is a minimum requirement for us. The fanbase is a huge part of the club's financially success. This also means that the club stakeholders listen more attentively to the voice of the fanbase especially because it will affect them financially.
      So there's a lot more factors at play than just "Fergie also sucked in the beginning." We're a club addicted to success - instant success at that. Managers the world over have been given far less rope not just United. Just look at Chelsea.
      I agree that we shouldn't be in a hurry to drop managers just because of a bad season. But there's alot more at play than just being loyal to a coach because we have Fergie more time.

    This is more or less spot on although as others have said, Broadhead is also important. He usually plays in the left, can hold the ball, has good feet and scores. Glad to see you give Burns the credit he deserves. The other issue is the use of subs. There is little difference in the quality of subs and those they replace so there are always fresh legs in the second half. Finally there is the X factor- team spirit, cohesion and belief. They often recover from losing positions and score late. Happens regularly so it’s no fluke

    I don't think it will be a good idea to change ETH. He developed a team with his playing mentality. If another manager comes, he has to change the whole team structure again. Again, it will take one season to accustom a team with a new manager playing styles. So, ETH should give another season and give ETH 4/5 signing to see how he manage the team. It takes time for players to get accustomed to his system because some of his signings are bad and there are lots of injury issues. Under ETH many young players outshine in OT like Mainoo, Garnacho, Hojlund, and now Amad. He gives sustainability in the squad which is hard to see in other previous managers after Sir Alex.

    Ipswich fan here and the change in our club with change of ownership and McKenna as head coach has been remarkable.
    We have quite a few loan players and players coming to the end of their contracts.
    We obviously need to invest in additions to the playing squad but it’s the balance of not doing a Nottingham Forrest and instead adding players who buy into our way and the dressing room.

    I think he is overrated but obviously a good head coach. When I say overrated because the media and guys like you, Englishman always hip up and they facilitate their downfall.

    Man United have really struggled in front of goal. With a poor defence and injuries, their goal difference has been close to zero and lately -1.Their goal output has been the worst
    of all top 10 EPL teams, injuries or no injuries. These are the tactics that will surely fix Man United!

    McKenna is a bad idea for UTD. At best its a side step, but risks further giving in to player power.
    Worst case is it's too soon for him. We can analyze his tactics and coaching throughout the past 2 seasons but even Kompany was hailed as a brilliant manager until he reached the EPL.

  • @crooner4848
    @crooner4848 12 дней назад

    And then there is the example of a certain Vincent Kompany who believed that the tactics that saw him stroll to promotion from the Championship would see him blow away the PL. After all, opposition is just opposition. PL, Championship, L1, L2, it's all the same. It's just football.

    I would love to pick up Davis at Utd. He’s old enough that he won’t block Amas’ development, but he’ll also be ridiculously cheap.

    Reminder: we played more eyes-pleasing football under Ole than Ten Hag ever was. Now we know that both McKenna and Carrick arent as inept as the likes of Man United supporters made them to be. I think the main reason why we had such huge drop of performance in 21/22 was due to lack of quality reinforcement, can you imagine playing the same ol' McFred for 3 seasons straight? Yet it was what happened at that time.

    McKenna is a good coach but u need more than that to manage united.. And he's untested as a big team manager and united is a big team with big players with big egos.. I don't think united should change the manager but if they do McKenna shouldn't be the replacement..

    Sounds wayy to tactically complex for the Manchester united players that have thrown the last 5 managers under the bus. Funny were all talking about hiring the same bloke that our players leaked had 'playground tactics'. What's really Manchester Uniteds issues, the manager... Or the players?

    Manchester United CANNOT bring in any up-and-coming managers or players until everything behind the scenes is sorted. The club destroys careers. McKenna would never manage again after being at United.

    I do wish people would stop talking trash. Just look at Potter, same said about him, goes to a big club, flops miserably, while Brighton thrive without him anyway. Sometimes you just get the right players, right mentalities and right circumstances it DOESNT mean you can handle a top 4 club. United aren't going to hire a manager with Championship Credentials, no ability with top players, no experience in Europe, nothing. That's just fools talk, the agents will be bumping his stock with rumors because they get paid if he moves to a big deal, that's all this noise is, happens all the time, Chelsea certainly wont be chasing him after what happened with Potter.

      Nope, not the caliber of manager we need for the rebuild am afraid. Especially if these same players who were there during his previous tenure are still there.
      If they undermined him before what's to stop them doing it to him again.
