Searching For The Lost Silver Spear Mine

- This week I'm searching for a mine - the Silver Spear Mine. This was at one point the main mining operation at Cerro Gordo...and I knew nothing about it until Christmas this year.
That's when a family sent me their grandmother's journal. She was the caretaker at Cerro Gordo from 1939-1942. These are years that aren't covered in the history books up here. Inside the journal, she often referred to the "Silver Spear" mine. So this week, I decided to try to find and explore that mine...

Let me know below what other types of videos you'd like to see and maybe some special guests I could work on getting out here! Tag them!

Me and my girlfriend watching from the UK! Shout out to Katie!
I love your channel. I think it is very motivational. Also, I don’t know if anyone has said this before, but I think your filmmaking and story-telling skills are under rated. I recently started taking my channel seriously and your channel is a source of inspiration to keep mine going. Keep up the good work and thank you.

Exactly half their shit is about aliens . I only watch for oak island and a few different shows
This is based in truth that is why.
@Basket Weaver wow that’s cool to find someone who believes what I do. I think either Sam or another searcher found it, but I do believe that more treasure could be there. Remember nearly 100 years after Sam lived, the chappells found the Chappell vault that had residue of gold and parchment on the drill bit. Sam either found most of it, or there are 2 stashes.
It's actually HISTORY-related... I can't think of the last time I saw something actually historical in nature on "History" Channel.
Angel MacCarthy the miniseries grant was really good too
My grandma lives in Lone Pine and I used to go with her to Cerro Gordo when I was kid. I always wondered about what the inside of these tunnels must look like and it’s a trip to actually be able to see them lol

It’s crazy to think that the baby they had in that book is around 80 years old now. I wonder if he’s still alive and in the area.
Would love to find out more about their life after they left.
Brent, do a little bit of research & see what you find.
@@chascarpenter5006 I tried to do some research but knowing the parents names were Francis and Curtis wasn’t enough. There wasnt much information from the 3 years they were there probably because there was very few people living there but all I found was a Curtis in death records but that was before they lived there so it was the wrong Curtis. I couldn’t find anything on Francis because the search results would be about San Francisco. If I knew the last name, I could probably find who their kid is but he never mentioned the last name. This is the kind of thing that would likely require Brent to do it because he has the book written by Francis so he may be able to search for names or more specific information on that family.
maybe and hopefully Brent can bring him up
The info came from a family who live not too far away - check out the gifts in the Christmas day underground film.

@@GhostTownLiving ruclips.net/video/wUpQRIEuaG4/видео.html I’m not saying you don’t know this stuff but you should do a video together sometime, it would be epic
He deserves a Netflix show, Enter Cerro Gordo the ghost town that is being resurrected by the elbow grease of an incredible man. There no running water but this mans heart fuels the town🖤
I'd rather he stay independent YT only. If this turns into a Netflix thing, it'll become 100% produced by some guy who wants to pizazz things up because " no one wants to just watch some guy bumble around a mine".
@@cn8299 I would wanna see a man just play around with a mine especially cause he owns it and it’s like an adventure
@Dubya i see what y’all are saying but he would get a payed enough big bucks to buy all the labor and equipment he needs which I don’t wanna make about the money but if what he wants is more funding and resources then this would be a sustainable way to get it
Nah.....then he would be beholden to them, their producers, their story telling, their editing, their time line (he'd be "on the clock")...and having experience, networks always seem to know better and "manufacture" heightened reality for dramatic affect. he would eventually lose creative control. this is the best place for him!!

Imagine doing a 3D photoscan of the entirety of the tunnels and stopes, so you have a 3D map of the entire Cerro mines, that would be mindblowing!
it would take a bit of effort too tho, but you can consider, maybe get some help with some collab.

maybe, I'll take a look, in that case "you" can yust complete that one
I have the tools to do this, I hope that soon I can go up and make one for us all to explore a little bit, and show the progress he has made.
Was just thinking that... Would be ideal to use modern imaging to find this thing..
That’s exactly what I thought a while ago, Because I saw something in one of the latest mine exploring videos of him that triggered this thought
I have to find out what it was
It would be so sick to see all the mines and stuff in a 3d scanned map. Maybe with some kind of LiDAR Scanner

Never lose that outlook on life my friend. Sadly, too many of us take too long, or just don't realise how quickly time has passed before the slowing down and letting everything soak in thing begins. That's why grandparents are so important. We quite often focus pinpointedly when younger. Job, house, good schools etc. It's only later the appreciation gene kicks in and the outlook you have and express becomes clearer every day. You're definitely headed in the right direction. Town plans, outlook, philosophy and spirit. I'll give you 10yrs to learn more & build everything the way you want. Then I'm bringing the wife with me (from Oz) and pick your brain of all the bits we don't get to see in your vlogs =D
I was thinking when I saw all that snow the next day " God don't want him going to that mine" 🤣
Wow, couldn't get much more interesting than a lost journal for insights on the real history!
Today we hit 9.7k watching live, crazy to see that.
So glad a normal person did this and it's not a Discovery channel histo-reality show with dramatic music for nothing happening and then a commercial break with a teaser for something potentially dramatic happening after the break, and then after the break a recap of the first part of the show.... And then nothing dramatic happens and rinse and repeat till the end.
This is infinitely more interesting and educational

Alright Brent! Tips for snowboarding newbies: always be up on your toes (or on your heels, but toes might be best to start of with). Keeping edges will help you control the board a little more firmly until you can get used to how it feels when you ride flat footed. This doesnt mean you need to literally have the board carving on edge, just that you should shift your weight fully onto your tippy toes or back on the back edge of your heels to feel more in control of the board and to be ready for it shifting underfoot. Remember: It's all-in-the-hips, so where you twist, it goes!
* Also, can we get an update on the kitties and the goats next video? love seeing them!
The last quote about only being able to control your reactions, is a lesson I try to teach my daughter. Thanks for stressing it too!
Also, you should receive more snow in a normal year, measured in tens of feet. Be ready!

My dad had a coffee can full of square nails, and i remember them available by bulk in a barrel at the hardware store. I was born in 1964, so id say they were still in use at least into the 60s
Actually surprisingly enough they are still being used for certain things, more so for novelty now though like wood furniture etc
@@tonybeer165
Shoeing horses, I believe.
While they definitely didn't stop being used completely, what Brent should have said is wide use started being phased out in the 1890s. Back then you wouldn't just throw out nails for nothing so I'm sure whatever supply that still existed was used for various things decades later.
The editing as you read the journal entries was really nice. I also appreciated the levity of the sled scenes. You talked about seeing tracks of animals, you should consider getting some game/trail cameras to set up, and if they prove to capture a fair amount, maybe work those clips into your videos.
That’s a pretty solid idea, would love to see that
And if those are mountain lions, maybe some protection.
1st snow job: Personal rig station to hoist you back up to snow board more. Set to the side, of course, to not ruin trail or snow. Also to be a haul route that will ease wear on your water sourcing and supply vehicles.

3rd snow job: Hope everyone that loves your videos, and visitors of the reawakened site, will respect the life and prosperity that you are single handedly inspiring people to appreciate in the history of a forsaken, yet beautiful, landscape.
