Hey Brent, the news paper about the blizzard was from 1886. I paused the video to read it and I did some research. Apparently it was a extatropical cyclone that hit most of the country. That’s pretty cool that you found that man. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
I learned recently that in the early years of denim, jeans were really expensive and most people couldn't afford them (including miners), so some of the mine bosses who were more affluent would buy them for their workers. The miners would change into jeans at the start of their shift in the mine, then at the end of the shift they'd change back into their own clothes and leave the jeans for the next work crew. It's why stacks of discarded clothing can occasionally be found in older workings. I'm glad you both made it out safe. It sure was sketchy with all the dynamite and blasting caps scattered everywhere, and the rocks sheering off at the end! Scary. I think you've made the right choice in sealing off that level for safety reasons, and I think it's also respectful to the miners who are buried there. It's always an eerie feeling watching someone walking around a mine that people have died in, especially on the same level. When I saw the miners graffiti I did wonder who they were. Do you have records on the miners that died there, and some history about their lives? I think that would be a fitting tribute if that information is still available. (I apologise if you've covered this in a newer video - I haven't caught up with them all yet.
My great grandpa worked on that mine and lost quite a few friends in the incident. He always told my dad that a rival mine company had been trying to sabotage the mine by cutting electricity and destroying the tracks at night. He said he didn’t know for sure if it collapsed due to someone’s malicious actions or if it was an accident. Either way still crazy

Hi Brent, I’ve been up to the mine many times, it’s been a few years. My uncle & aunt owned the store in Keeler, they both passed many years ago but the stories they would tell us were crazy. My uncle worked the mine his name was Richard Gandara. I will make it a point to head up that way next time we’re in Keeler my brother owns the Ranchito Mendoza property on the coroner of Laws & Cerro Gordo. Hope to meet up with you one day. In all the times we went up there we never ever went into the buildings except the mine you guys are in. The craziest thing about the whole experience was how the hell did they get all that machinery up there, and the elevator shaft unbelievable and cold. Stay safe you’ll get it done. See you!
That was the scariest damn mine caving adventure I have ever seen. I actually got that sphincter-tightening claustrophobia just watching this. Jeez. I'm glad I knew you were already back out when I started watching this. Reminded me a lot of Stephen King's "Desperation" You and Johnny, of all people, should read it. Thanks for an incredible adventure.
Not gonna lie, I've spent the majority of my caving career in hi-top chucks. Unless we were going in somewhere we knew had streams or a water table, the chucks just always gave me better grip and footing than any boots. I felt I needed the ankle flexibility that the chucks afforded, I lost count of the number of times I almost rolled an ankle in boots.
That's literally what happened to the thirty guys that were still under the rubble that these folks were climbing all over and why that part of the mine was covered up.
I did a lot of caving when I was in my teens and 20s. There's absolutely no way I would climb into that level just to have a look around. Everything is unstable.
This video was amazing, I feel a bit sad that all the stuff on that level will never be recovered but maybe it's not that different from what you can find in the other tunnels. It sounds like it was a huge risk to go there in the first place so we're lucky just to be able to watch this!
I have never felt claustrophobic before in my life and always loved squeezing in places as a kid, but as soon as I saw them get into the 200 level my world was changed.
I personally am glad you boarded up the 200 level! Every time you go near it, it feels like someone is walking over my grave, to the point of goosebumps! Sure glad you guys made it out ok! Cerro Gordo NEEDS YOU!!!
Edit: There are actually two different papers being shown. The first is the Arizona Daily Star from January 1934. The second is the Los Angeles Examiner which is also from early 1934. The Marion Davies picture seen at 8:06 is 'Going Hollywood', which came out in 1933 but was still running in early 1934. It actually says 'copyright 1934' at 8:16 if you look really really carefully under the headline 'Milked'. I bet different miners had different papers from Arizona, and L.A, depending on where they were from and what they wanted to know.
The newspaper is from January 30, 1934. You can find it if you search Google for the phrase "In Canada, many points recorded lows of 40 below", which appears in the newspaper text from the mine.
@@aussiehighways1130 Yes you are correct, that is one of them. The other is an L.A paper from the same time or perhaps a bit earlier, as it aligns with the release of 'Going Hollywood', a Marion Davies picture seen at 8:06. You can see the date '1934' if you look super carefully under the word 'Milked' at 8:16.
Interesting! Another one of the papers outlines the trade of Tris Speaker from the Boston Red Sox to the Cleveland Indians. That trade happened in 1916, so seems like they kept papers around a while...
It's crazy thinking about just how many complexes of these tunnels will never be touched again/haven't been touched since. Who knows how deep that mine goes, or what you could find, the deeper you go.
To find out you'd have to go down there and clean up any loose rock, and haul it all up to the surface. Eventually you'll have cleared out a whole level. It's possible you might even find lost exits.
You are making me nervous being in these mines. I have idea that has been festering in my head seeing you and off the ranch vids. Actually buying abandoned towns bringing them back to its heyday. So happy to come across your vid that you are doing this with Cerro Gardo. Keep up the good work and be safe.
My jaw dropped watching this. This whole level was full of history. When you found the Jeans i couldnt believe my eyes. Then the dynamite room and ore cart tracks everywhere. The newspaper articles were super cool too. Keep it up!
ME TOO! lolol. As he said the ceiling was coming down, I actually got super anxious and was like, ""Oh man get me out of here before we die" hahaha. It was so awesome, but it's amazing how I felt like I was there.
This video is a great test of the viewers anxiety. I would not have been ok watching this some years ok but I seem to be getting over my anxiety and I made it without pausing or skipping. Glad you made it out both of you.
I think that the tobacco tin you found around 4:10 contained the remnants of calcium carbide, for carbide lamps. Once exposed to air long enough, the moisture will cause it to react and leave the byproducts, which look exactly like that milky-gray white, clumpy powder in there.
The Prince Albert can was full of carbide. The miners would carry extra carbide for their lamps in tobacco cans. In just about every mine I've explored Ive found these. Usually Prince Albert, sometimes Velvet.
I’m looking at the comments and I’m just asking did he find the Chinese miners did he bury them where are they I watch ghost adventures and they said their bodies are still there
We need chickens in this town! I put it in the live chat. But hear me out! You can harvest the eggs to eat and they also work as alarms in a good way if there is too much commotion.. not sure about the alarm thing actually but forsure can eat the eggs lol
I actually mentioned that. You get pets that also give back & what Old Western town wouldn't have a few. It would add to the authenticity with very little work. I know there are predators & I've lost a few over the years & I've got many more predators than he will up there. Wolves, Bobcats, coyotes, birds of prey, bear, dogs, fetal cats, snakes, opposums & believe it or not Ravens... the smartest bird in United States goes after the chicks. I let them out and they free range during the day and go back to the coop at night and I just shut the door. They know where to return to. I imagine there are a lot of insects, seeds & even mice they can supplement their diet with. Also they don't need a lot of water expecially when they're not in chicken houses or triple digit temps. The USPS will bring them to your house or call you when they arrive at the nearest post. Good idea. Living things are great for loneliness. We ALL get a bit lonely at times.
If he responds back to this, I will look into buying and sending him some chickens. OR we can crowd fund so he can not only buy some but also have proper housing for the bock bocks and cok a doodle doos

I wonder if my dad ever went up to Cerro Gordo in 1966, when we lived in Lone Pine. I was 5 then. Dad worked at a bakery Lone Pine(he was a baker on air carrier ship in US Navy). Dad died in Sunshine Mine Fire (Kellogg ID) May 2, 1972. 91 miners died (carbon monoxide). I just googled some info and found he worked on the 4600 level and was found on 3700 level. :(

Yup. One of the first major things I noticed.
Doing dangerous things is cool, may aswell keep up appearances. 😎
I was looking at those lmao
this is something i’ll NEVER try. this scares the shit outta me and getting stuck and not being able to go back is the most scariest thing ever
That's literally what happened to the thirty guys that were still under the rubble that these folks were climbing all over and why that part of the mine was covered up.
Yup
I did a lot of caving when I was in my teens and 20s. There's absolutely no way I would climb into that level just to have a look around. Everything is unstable.
This video was amazing, I feel a bit sad that all the stuff on that level will never be recovered but maybe it's not that different from what you can find in the other tunnels. It sounds like it was a huge risk to go there in the first place so we're lucky just to be able to watch this!
Claustrophobic as can be I will gladly enjoy this from home and let you go down there for me.
Yea I explore places, but something like this would be a complete nope.
But the views tho..
Even just watching i feel suffocated.
I have never felt claustrophobic before in my life and always loved squeezing in places as a kid, but as soon as I saw them get into the 200 level my world was changed.
getting lockt up in a smal room i wil be oke but deep underground if something go wrong almost imposibel to escape no thank u wil never be there

How the hell do you even know that? are you 100?
The article with the blizzard says the blizzard was in Japan, island of Utsuyo(?), Jan 29, if that helps. With rescuers coming from Korea.
Roof collapses slightly, "oh shit", continues.

Found this video after some of your later content. Glad you were able to go back ore hunting and make it out once again
Also, "The 200 Level" is a great name for a Cerro Gordo nightclub
Or the future movie of this guy getting trapped and surviving for years off of moss and water
A great name for whiskey
I'd party there. Let's make it happen👍
Won't it be disrespectful to do deceased?
Level 200 sounds better IMO for a club name
You are making me nervous being in these mines. I have idea that has been festering in my head seeing you and off the ranch vids. Actually buying abandoned towns bringing them back to its heyday. So happy to come across your vid that you are doing this with Cerro Gardo. Keep up the good work and be safe.
This is genuinely the first underground explorer vid where someone actually found stuff lmao

HOHOHO!!!
I came to the comments to see if anyone knew what that was xD
All I could think of was that if you found Levi’s someone would be in them still. 👖👖👖👖👖👖👖😬
That was my thought too like oh look Levi's knowing the history of that level they are probably still occupied ha ha
Double money sell the jeans then sell the bones.
I had the same creepy feeling.
Good point
Me too! I was like great there's a body in it isn't there, fuck
The Prince Albert can was full of carbide. The miners would carry extra carbide for their lamps in tobacco cans. In just about every mine I've explored Ive found these. Usually Prince Albert, sometimes Velvet.
Those carbide lamps are so sweet

We need chickens in this town! I put it in the live chat. But hear me out! You can harvest the eggs to eat and they also work as alarms in a good way if there is too much commotion.. not sure about the alarm thing actually but forsure can eat the eggs lol
And he’s so sweet with the other animals I can’t wait to see what he’d name the chickens!!
@@DimmestOwl94 I mentioned that too. He actually has everything he really needs already there for a coop & run except good quality wire. I offered to donate $ specifically for that. I have an incubator I could send him but not sure if his electrical is dependable enough. I'm thinking it probably is. An incubator can go a few hours a day without power.
We need to have as many people as we can like a post so it gets his attention. OR multiple people mention it every video until he has no choice but to address it lol
The newspaper at 7:37 is from 1933. In the small print it mentions Marion Davies film "Going Hollywood" entering its second week :)
