A fascinating trip through a bassists mind learning new material. I like her concept of transcribing a bassists method of playing she doesn't fancy to know why she doesn't fancy it. Thanks!
I love this lesson, thank you! I have one big question. In the beginning, when explaining the sequence of C-D-E, how do you figure those notes out? If you have a song to learn, how do you start out with figuring out the notes and chords? Basically, how do you start the process l. Help? Thanks!
Hi Skip! Glad you enjoyed the lesson. To find the notes, play along with the track and listen carefully. Hum or sing the note you're trying to find, and then play notes on your bass until you match it. Keep doing this for different sections of the song, like the intro, verse, chorus, etc. It might take time, but you'll get better with practice. You can also use apps like 'Amazing Slow Downer' or 'Transcribe' to slow down the track for a closer listen. Ear-training is a skill that improves with practice, so keep at it! If you're interested, we have a course called 'Hear It, Play It!' coming soon that covers this in detail. Hope this helps, and I'd love to hear about your progress! Cheers, James.
One of the best demonstrations on how to learn a song, and memorize it as well. Thank you. The challenge I have is the 3rd level of Transcribing. I have a difficult time telling exactly what the bass is doing. I can guess if I already know the chords, but when it comes to the fills and faster notes, I have a hard time transcribing. Most of the time I am just happy with the bassline I have created to go along with the song and chord progression rather than trying to do it exactly like on the original recording. (by the way, I play tuba and not bass guitar.) Again, great demonstration on learning and memorizing and mapping out a new song. Thank you.
Great video. Always eager to learn how to learn. Being in a cover band I’m always learning new songs. A little distracted by the LPs on the wall. Some of my all time favorites. Dark Side, Sgt. Peppers, Extreme’s PornoGraffiti and Tears for Fears.
Haha, That is definitely a challenging one, but it's such a great song! Keep at it, and remember that every tough song you tackle makes you a better player. All the best!
I want her bass, it's gorgeous!
Yes it is! Loving it!

Thanks for the feedback! Transcribing can be tricky, but adapting the bassline to your style is perfectly fine. Enjoy the music and have fun playing!
