Why Fiat Is Struggling In The United States

- Fiat first left the United States in 1983 amid poor sales and a reputation for unreliability. The iconic Italian automaker returned in 2010 and nearly a decade later it's facing new issues as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles says it has no plans on giving up in the United States.
Internationally, Fiat is known for cars like the Fiat 500, Fiat Uno, Fiat Palio, Fiat Punto, and the Fiat Strada. The company's automobile business dates back to 1899. According to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' website, "Fiat is rooted in a more than century-long tradition of designing and making small cars, many of which have become icons for entire generations and accompanied Italy’s major economic and social transformations."
Founded in Turin in 1899, Fiat's small hatchbacks and roadsters are well known in its home country of Italy and other parts of Europe. Fiat's history in the United States dates back to the early 1900s. The company even built some of its earlier cars in a factory in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Why Fiat Is Struggling In The United States
The real reason they fail in America: the average American weighs more than a Fiat 500.

In a country where everyone drives a big car and you drive a small one, you are discriminated.
Also in a country that mainly uses cars you’ll get ridiculed for using public transportation cause you are “poor”. We are one weird country but I love it lol
@@Sub4CarClips plus your public transportation sucks ass man, kinda sad that “the greatest nation on earth” has a worse public transport than some african nations
@@spectrent yeah we do have really bad public transport, but I feel like it’s because we don’t really need it. Most primates lost the ability to produce vitamin c because one of our ancestors had a rare mutation causing his body to not produce vitamin c, but he/she survived since he/she ate fruit fulfilling their vitamin c necessities, thus spreading his genes onto his kids and then their kids etc. Same thing with us Americans. We had decent public transport but as it started to get worse we never noticed the difference cause we used our vehicles to travel. Only residents of a couple of cities actually need good public transport but the rest of us don’t.
@@spectrent I still kinda think we are a really good country. At least my state is I don’t know about as a whole. However I feel like everyone hates us without realizing that a lot of stuff they use was possible because of Americans. “If the u.s never existed the world would be a better place”. It would be the opposite in my opinion. Anyways it’s my right to believe that this is the greatest country. I feel like most people who hate this country have never visited cause I usually here positive notes from people who went on vacation here. Only bad places really are like L.A and Detroit.

Yes.
Fiat is very popular in Europe with quality on par with the best.
Fiats did earn a reputation for poor quality back in the 70s. From what I have researched, there were problems with substandard steel and more significantly with labour unrest and agitation in the Turin plants.
The Fiat of today is a totally different company. The only issues I had with mine were breaking of some interior plastics (supposedly an issue only through 2013 models) and two broken window regulator clips. I also had to replace an engine coolant thermostat. There were no issues with anything in the powertrain. It ran like a champ, day in and day out and it let me save a LOT of money on gasoline.
Ive had my 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth for over 3 years now. 50k later and still no issues. Extremely reliable. Just did the timing, tensioner and water pump. Now at 120k. Still a fun fast little car to drive.

The stick shift was fun and let me get every ounce of performance out of the otherwise weak 101 HP engine. It was too small for long family trips but a perfrct vehicle for commuting and errands.
The thing I really miss is being able to squeeze this thing into ANY available pa4king slot.
If you do buy one, avoid the earliest models (through 2013) as there were some quality bugs to iron out (I had to replace both window regulators within a few months of one another).
But like I say, this car was FUN. It met my first rule of driving. "A car should never be boring."
Hit by what car?
The classical FIAT 500 in the Sixties had a 2-cylinder and 25 HP engine. Perfect for commuters, youngsters and ladies throughout all Italian towns. A 101 HP engine for the current FIAT 500 should be largely sufficient: if Americans do not appreciate saving money and gasoline, it is a pity. The Planet is one and CO2 now is over 400 ppm. Indeed, I appreciate your point.

All car manufacturers have adopted toyota's quality philosophy. However it was really Ford who started it. Many safety features you find in cars today have its roots in Ford's safety programs. Toyota's quality is based on the 5S system which is now used by all. Unfortunately no matter how well the cars are made, the neglect, lack of proper maintenance and abuse will take its toll. Well, as they noted, gas prices were nearly at their peak price and there was an economic recession. I guess they thought Americans might be a bit wiser than we are. Lol they were discontinued because nobody bought them. Because they're impractical and horrendously unreliable.
Interesting video. In Europe these cars are still selling well, and are not considered unreliable.
Here in Europe are Fiat 500's with more then 300.000 km on it witch didn't needed a lot of maintance.
Us cars, most of them have also poor building quality. Especially electrics...
@@LuizSMatos-dr9tz There are many cars here which are the size of a Fiat 500 or smaller. These sell well because people, particularly women, like them!

People who own Fiats love them. I have owned 2 of them, they have charm and so far have been reliable.
I know a few that hated them so much they traded for something "better" in less than a year. FIAT's name doesn't resonate well with many US people.

I really don't want to buy a fiat because the car is really small and Japanese manufacturing is top notch.

This makes me sad. I bought my FIAT Abarth in 2015. I love it. No issues, tons of fun to drive. Can't get a better sports car for the price.
I know! and the Abarths are so hard to find too, was hoping they would begin to import the facelifted Abarths like the 595 or the 695 biposto, those are amazing! but now they might be stop importing all of them :/
my advice is hold onto your Abarth, they might go up in value :)

I have really been hoping for the 595 or 695, but realize that isnt going to happen unfortunately
@@adamjohnson7325 yeah I'd buy either in a heartbeat.
The 500 is a total gem, especially the abarth. Sadly I can't really say about the rest of the lineup. 500X is okay and 500L is a total no for me. It hurts me the most to say that the 124 is overshadowed by the miata even though it's a very good car ( might be biased by my preference towards N/A tho )
Fiat has a whole line up of car they sell in Europe but don't sell here. You have to give customers a selection.
They also have more color and style options in Europe. To be honest I don’t like most of the colors they’re offering Americans - they’re boring
It's failing because many of us owned Fiats back in the 70s/80s! I owned a 79 Fiat X19. It was super cute and super raggedy! My mechanic asked me to buy another car. He hated working on it!

Fly2kill1 a pickup truck will always been more fun
Paul Williams I just can’t agree with that. A fast, small car is great for every day use. It’s something you have to do to get it. Even more so if you have a lot of curves or mild traffic.
We have a lot of massive trucks and cars on US roads so a lot of people are afraid to drive around in a small european car.
no I heard is bad quality
Mathieu Levert GM sells alot of Pick up trucks in the middle East so your comment is wrong
Remove tariffs and watch how competitive the US becomes.
@@philipgates988 its not the tariffs, we just don't make cars that are good for many markets. My friend had a f-150 in Germany and the UK and couldn't take it anywhere because it didn't fit in parking garages and it costs too much to fuel it.
William Parker Yes, and having inexpensive fuel changes the domestic auto industry, and that doesn’t dovetail with auto producers elsewhere.
I owned two of these 500’s (std hatch and conv) and in 5 years had little to no trouble at all. Wife’s Honda had more issues! However, while they were fun to drive especially around town, they were sadly underpowered on the road and pretty noisy as well. They never felt even slightly premium although the asking price for the convertible with leather was $30K. Got 40mpg even on the highway but with gas at $2 per gallon in the US, it was pretty hard to justify one. Dealers were hopeless and a constant source of rip offs about everything - including a simple oil change! Still love the looks but will not buy again.
It would have been a great car for earlier this year when the gas prices were so high

It may help that in Europe there are other models than the 500. If Fiat cared they would sell the Tipo, Strada, Punto and Panda in the States or maybe advertise them.
They would rebadge them as Dodge
Punto and Panda are also small cars
They would not work in U.S. Only model that would work is Tipo. Punto is too cheap, Panda is nice but too old now and Strada is not even sold in Europe.

I rented a brand new Fiat 500X in Switzerland. The electronic parking brake wouldn’t work when I tried to park it up a mountain. I turned the wheel clockwise so it wouldn’t roll backward. When my fiancé tried to charge her phone it would not charge unless if I turned the Auto Start Stop feature off.
We have a Cinquecento and love it. It's not supposed to be a luxury car, but it's small, sporty, and fun. We live in a rural area where people drive a lot of pickup trucks, which makes it stand out, but that makes us like it all the more 😄
Let’s see the obesity rate in the us is higher than ever... so truth is most Americans can’t even fit in a fiat let alone be comfortable it 😂😬 oh yeah plus that price
I've always preferred to drive small cars, not the behemoths produced by the U.S. or imported from Japan. I'm on my third FIAT, the 500L model. Previously I owned 128 and X1/9 models. I've loved them all. It's sad to think that FIAT might give up the American market once more. I'll miss them if they leave.
They're not leaving......they own Chrysler.
I owned a 2015 fiat500 pop, automatic transmission, it had 68,000 miles when I bought it in 2018. It had a hitch which I never used as I didn't have to haul anything. I was in the military so every other month I'd drove at least 1,800 to see family members. After getting out, I drove it from El Paso, TX to Michigan. You can fit a booster and car seat in the back.
I never had an electric nor transmission nor engine issues with my vehicle. Had to replace the headlight buld 3 times during the 3 yrs I had it. I did engine oil changes and the basic maintenance.
My husband hit a deer a month ago and my insurance deemed it a total loss, the front of the car took all the damage, thankfully my husband did not get injured. I am looking for a new vehicle at the moment and have my eyes on a bigger fiat as this one was very reliable to me and I loved the look!
I hope my review helps someone else. Really sad to see the fiat500 leave our market, but understandable as folks love bigger vehicles with bigger space.
The biggest spanish motor company (SEAT) made FIAT rebrands for years. Could you do a video on them? Seat 600 for example was a symbol of spanish industrialization, and pretty much a slightly bigger Fiat 500.
I've had no problem selling the half dozen 500's I have bought in the last 3 years to flip. Sure they sold better 5 years ago with $4 gas, but I remember you couldn't give a truck or SUV away either around that time. And the people who say it's too small probably have never sat in one themselves.
Exactly
I love how this video is posted right when I start seeing more and more fiats each day in the U.S
Here in Brazil, fiat is one of the most popular brand, with small hatchbacks, premium sedans and small and medium trucks.
I still drive a 2004 1.2 FIAT Panda (bought brand new). Every 100k needs a new transmission (price around 300€) but its simpleness and its on roads efficiency I think it still makes sense to keep it on road even if it has just 59 hp (when more recent 0.8 3-cylinders FIAT engines generate 85hp WTF!!)
In India, Fiat engines are in entire Suzuki car range, they make good engines in 1.3 ltr category. Small and economical for Indian market.Suzuki is able to dominate the entire market because of fiat engines. Now these engines are in Tata, Jeep, MG and what not brands. I think they should focus on small and economical cars.
The 1.3 liter multijet, yeah, a dude here in italy has made that beast a 400 hp engine whit 4k euros of mods... from a diesel 1.3😂😂
I have owned several Fiats. As I do with all my cars, I drove them UNMERCIFULLY. They do require some maintenance BUT they are put together VERY WELL. The thing to know about Fiat and ALL Italian cars is; you buy an Italian car because you LIKE to drive and ALL Italian cars drive REALLY well. If it is a Fiat or a Ferrari, when you get out of the car you want to get back in and drive more. People who want a car as an appliance will NEVER understand this. Fiat is not for them.
Couldn't agree more, they are built to be driven. That's why I loved my Alfa Romeo boxer.
It is a shame that more people do not see this. Unfortunately, people in the US want large boxes on wheels that simply move down the road. We are also a disposable culture, so people that means people(not all) do not take care of their stuff and simply throw it away when it breaks. I do not understand the reliability argument, regarding Fiats cause US brands have had horribly constructed products with many problems and recalls. The fact that the entire US auto industry nearly imploded a few years ago, is proof of this....cause during the recession, the more reliable brands were still holding on, as whatever market was left, was still buying from them.
I have a 2018 fiat 500c with a turbo
It’s fast and I love it!
I'm happy that Fiat at least made it back to the US in my lifetime.
Love my 500e and getting a Spider eventually
Big one in my bathroom if you want it
They're simply not great cars and their pricing isnt aggressive enough for what they are. a 500 is worth around $7000 new to me.
I don't understand the Americans obsession with CrossOvers.
Its something of the older people. It's less back pain for them to get in and out of. (Most new cars in America are sold to people over 40).
Same as how I never understood old people buying Lincolns, Cadillacs, and Chrysler ‘luxury’ cars. Always saw those as a complete waste of money.
@Jody Owen I do think Sedans , and cars are just as comfortable. Besides they give better mileage , lesser material usage - that adds up to being more environment friendly in the long run. American as a consumer is setting a bad example. Their obsessions with bigger vehicles have changed the auto industry even influencing other nations - as everywhere people are tempted to buy larger vehicles. Seriously, I do dig the concept of SUVs with extrme off-road capabilities, stronger chassis, their 4 wheel drive , differential lock feature . But crossovers - I feel are the most pointless category of vehicle- chassis of a sedan with looks of an SUV.
Also why USA don't have railroads. Railroads are one of the most economic means of transportation and also the fastest. Americans burn more fuel in consumer transportation than any other countries.
@Fred Jansen That's false Macho. These Crossovers have the same weak chassis of a Sedan inside. It's just like the chicken from Chicken Farm obnoxiously obese but not as nutritious.
Serious question, because I don't know. Why do these small, "affordable" cars, cost as much as a Camry? Why aren't they 10k?
They mostly are but not fashionable small cars like Mini Cooper, Fiat 500 or VW Beetle.
Greed. Insatiable greed.
Because the Camry and Corolla are produced in massive numbers for a World market, so the overall cost to manufacture per car is lower. Fiat would also have to defray the cost of US compliance over many fewer cars. A common criticism the Toyota receives is they're bland and appliance like. If you want something that's more stylish and unique, then expect to pay more for it as it does cost more to make less.
The 500 is a luxury model in Fiat line. The Panda is the cheap one. But the Panda doesn't look as good as the 500 and tgey are afraid of japanese and korean competition.
The Fiat 500 is a too energy-saver car for americans and not polluting enough.
