What gear ratio should I run on my slot car? - How fast does the motor need to rev?

  • There is so much that I can say about gearing on a slot car, but this is a start to helping you make the correct decisions depending on the types of motor and track you might be racing on.
    Gear Ratios...
    6 : 40 = 1 : 6.67
    6 : 39 = 1 : 6.50
    6 : 38 = 1 : 6.33
    7 : 43 = 1 : 6.14
    7 : 41 = 1 : 5.86
    7 : 40 = 1 : 5.71
    7 : 39 = 1 : 5.57
    7 : 38 = 1 : 5.43

Thanks a bunch for this vid on gears and gear ratios. Kind of confusing at first. Your explanations were super helpful. Thanks again.

I'd like to understand how revving the motor higher aids the handling. Would the explanation be an idea for a future tech tip?

Thanks for asking. I will certainly add that to my list of tech tips 👍🏻

Please could you show how you swap gear ratios? How do you remove the axle if the gear is glued on? How do you not melt a spur gear if you solder a pinion and they are in contact? How do you move and align and fix the motor to get a mesh with good lash?

James, do you exclusively use 72p gears. I didn’t see mention of 64p.

great video, what brand is the 16 deg angled 72 pitch spur gear that comes lightened etc. keep up the great work.

I think you are asking about the ATTAN gears.

Silly question are any of these cars ever direct drive with no gearing ? Cheers tj 👍

Not a silly question and thanks for asking. People have tried a direct drive slot car but there are a couple of major issues associated with it. One problem is that if the motor armature is rotating in the same direction as the wheels, then the torque of the motor will cause the can of the motor to try and rotate in the opposite direction. This causes the front of the chassis to lift out of the slot. The other problem is that a conventional sidewinder or anglewinder slot car uses the gyroscopic effect of the motor to help the handling of the car. If the motor was directly driving the wheels the gyroscopic effect would be far less as the motor would need to be rotating at a slower speed.

Not silly, when I was a kid, slotcars we ran had direct friction drive from the motor amrature to one of the rear wheels. Rubber O ring on motor, set against the 'new' siliscone style rear tires, circa 1968-69 if I remember right......JC

@@jamescouden8730 , I know PARMA used to sell “whisper jet” cars that were driven by an o-ring type belt. 👍🏻

Well i picked up a Scalextric black corvette with a 18k Mubachi and thought why nit give a rewind a try used 0.25mm enamel copper wire 50 winds per pole @ 12volts it pulled 800 Mamps and rpm was off the charts what a great experiment very enjoyable process... will look to rewind but with more winds hopefully bring down amp demand and heat a little... have no idea how i will control this motor ontrack may need to build custom brass chassis with lexan body i think.. cheers tj 😊👍

      @@tjkirkpatrick9451 , sounds like a beast. 800 Mega amps is frightening ⚡️💥.
If it was drawing 800 milli amps then that is still quite a handful for a little Mabuchi motor in a Scalextric car. You might need to upgrade your track power supply and solder the track joints together. Good effort and keep trying new winds till you find something you are happy with 👏👍🏻
