- I know what some of you are thinking about this week’s “Remake of a Classic.” The Partridge Family? Really? Well, in my opinion a good song is a good song - no matter who does it - and I personally like this one. It’s got drive, it’s a little ballsy, and the playing and vocals are stellar. But, then again, with members of L.A.’s famous Wrecking Crew handling all the instruments, and Jackie (Robin) Ward, Tom and John Bähler, and Ron Hicklin on backing vocals, it’s a winner. That’s right…as hard as it is to believe (note sarcasm) none of The Partridge Family show’s cast played on the record (shocker!); just David Cassidy on lead vocals and Shirley Jones on the backup. Most big U.S. groups in the 60s and early 70s didn’t play on their hits (The Beach Boys, The Monkees, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Grass Roots, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap…the list goes on and on), so this was nothing new.
Written by Irwin Levine and L. Russell Brown (both of whom wrote a string of hits for Tony Orlando and Dawn), “I Woke Up in Love This Morning” first appeared on The Partridge Family’s 1971 album, “Sound Magazine”. It reached Number 13 on US Billboard’s Hot 100 and Number 9 on the US Cash Box 100. It reached Number 4 in Canada. Over the years it’s been covered several times, including a 2009 version by Weezer.
My version, for the most part, follows the original…except for on the chorus, where I decided to go heavy (it’s amazing what a Les Paul through a Marshall amp can do). Musically, this was a piece of cake (although the high harmony on the chorus had the vein in my neck bulging out). Overall, a fun tune to do.
His voice fits great with that. Good job. We need more happy music again, like this. Love the Partridge Family!
Thanks so much, Linda!
Another outstanding job Russ!! I watched the partridge family over and over and was crazy over Susan Dey!! Your vocals are outstanding!! And i swear i hear shirley in one of those tiles!!! Thanks so much for these wonderful trips down memory lane!!
Hi Chris! Many thanks, as always. Yeah, Susan Dey was a bit of a dish. I called her to see if she'd do a cameo...she hung up on me.
@@russwilloughby501 ha!!!!!
@@russwilloughby501 Aim lower Russ! That's what I do these days. Go for Shirley, I think she was an even bigger dish. Doesn't hurt that her family owned Jones Brewing Co. too. (originally from my area) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Jones
Excellent job as always. Can I ask what program you use, or to get these multiple panels? I'd be happy if I could figure out how to get three or four. Thanks for sharing all your hard work and talent
@@morganchatsworthiii9178 yes shirley jones was beautiful!!! And for someone almost 90. Still looks great!
@@morganchatsworthiii9178 Looking back at the episodes, yeah, SJ was pretty smokin'. As for what I use to put these together, the audio is recorded track by track in real time on a Yamaha AW1600 while I video each part on my phone. Then everything is imported into Movavi video software. Thanks so much for the kind comments!
Nothing wrong with the partridge family! That was some classic tv. You nailed it dude. No lie I was crushing on Susan Dey . Thank you Russ.
Nothing wrong at all! That said, it was Barbara Eden that did it for me. Thanks so much!
I nominate Russ Willoughby for the "Making Best Use of the Pandemic" award. Every single one of your videos blows my mind. You are an amazing talent sir, and thank you for brightening our days.
LOL! Thanks so much, Mark; I really appreciate it!
😂😂😂😂😂
a EXCELLENT take on a great song , would be wonderful done Flamenco style, your skill EXCEEDS the original, remarkable, I've shared this on FB, all fine things SHOULD BE SHARED.
Thanks so much....I really appreciate you sharing it on FB!
You are incredibly talented. Thank-you for sharing.
Thank you so much!
Bravo Russ. Amazing Vocals and a good driving Les Paul! As usual, the description is really informative. Keep on rockin'. Didn't know the song before. Brown Sugar is ready for release tomorrow. Preview link deleted.
Thanks so much Rolf; glad you liked it. I checked out your Stones cover.....very cool! I really like the tone of that Squire Tele.
Its a masterpiece of pop songwriting. F Anyone who doesn't have the ability to see that. From the best songwriters and studio musicians at the time, or ever. Great Job. The best Bridge ever
I still listen to them at least once a week. Davis Cassidy was/is my first vocal influence. So underrated
Thanks so much, Dirk; it's most appreciated! It really was a special time in music history...so much talent.
I swear I can hear David in there somewhere 💕
Excellent!
LOL...thank you!
@@russwilloughby501 you’re welcome! I’m on the lookout for your cover of “The Critters”, Mr. Diengly Sad. Hint. Hint.
Brings back memories from June 12, 1976.
I’m ready to go down to the corner and get my copy of tiger beat magazine! No doubt Your on the cover this month!
I'm hoping to find my face pressed onto a record on the back of a box of cereal.
Oh man the great memories of my youth😁this was one of my favorite songs when I was 13 years old👏👏👏this is great
Happy to bring back some great memories...thanks!
Fantastic! Id be lying if I didnt say I watched every Partridge ep ever as a kid.
Spot on cover... justice to late DC vocals!
Ill meet you halfway next?
I saw black sabbath, VH, led zepp, Nugent all live in heyday...not ashamed to say I like TPF tunes still.
I watched any show that showed drums, guitars, etc.,.....I thought it was just so cool (even the Banana Splits). For me it was Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, etc.,...but like you I have problem admitting to liking tunes like this. As always, many thanks!
The Partridge Family had some great songs. Vocals David Cassidy and of course the great Shirley Jones. You did an amazing job !
Yes, they did! Thanks so much!
This is a totally awesome rendition - nicely done!
That was great! The Partridge family was my favourite programme growing up. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This blows my mind! First of all, your perfect vocals and musicianship, then the craft put into these videos! Love this song choice, too! The Partridge Family had some great tunes!
Many thanks, my friend; I really appreciate it. You know you just can't go wrong with good material!
Hello Russ. Somewhere up in that rock 'n roll heaven I'm sure David Cassidy would be proud of your version. Spot on start to finish once again. Do you do any Grass Roots? One of my favorites. Continued success. You are an amazing musician.
Wow, thanks! If you search my channel you'll find "Sooner or Later" in there. Thanks again, Bob!
Omg! David Cassidy himself would be impressed! Beautiful memory of my youth ❤
That's a nice thought; thanks so much!
Wow, I absolutely have to show this and play this one for my wife, one of the biggest all time David Cassidy and Partridge family fans as have I been since the original TV series!! Once again, an absolutely spot-on perfect note for note cover done to perfection-AWESOME!! 🎼🎤🎸🥁🎸🎹🎸
As always, I appreciate it!
Yep🥰
Another great cover. You handled the high/soprano/Shirley Jones' parts nicely.
Thanks a ton....I appreciate it!
Great cover of a good song. You did a nice job Russ, thanks I really enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it...thanks!
I remember when that song was first out it was ridiculed by many because it was "The Partridge Family". Other music popular at that time was Jethro Tull and Yes. Ironic which music is covered today.... Great job as usual. Keep them coming!
A lot of tunes were slammed because of the name attached to them (The Monkees, The Carpenters, etc.), which was a shame because nine times out of ten the group had very little to do with the writing and recording. So glad you enjoyed it...thanks so much!
love when someone-a musician-hears the potential of a d.c./p.f remake of one of their songs. there is also a band called "scream idol" who did an amazing, hard rock/punk version of this, which i loooove. also heard a cool punk/glam band do "heartbeat", but can't remember who they were....hard rock/glam/punk..my favorite genre. thank you russ, for sharing your interpreted version of this classic! very cool!
So glad you liked it...thanks so much!
Wow!!!!! Awesome! I introduced my granddaughter to the Partridge Family and she listens to the songs every day…so I listen too! Love them still today….very nostalgic for me but I think I love them even more today! Please cover more…there are so many good ones to choose from!!! I appreciate David Cassidy’s voice, talents, and musicality!
Aside from the Partridge Family songs, he had his own albums…that I still listen to…check them out if you haven’t already! Love your appreciation for the magic that was created to make the Partridge Family sound!
Thanks...I really appreciate the nice comments!
Yep, blows my mind too. This song actually sounds better to me compared to when i heard it as a teenager on AM radio WCOL/Columbus Oh. Partridge Family! I’m impressed again Russ.
Many thanks, Joe! Hope you're having a great holiday!
Great version of an underrated song.
Many thanks...glad you liked it!
This is fantastic! Can't believe other people enjoy this song as much as i do! 🤓
Thanks so much for listening!
Fantastic!
Many thanks!
you deserve more than the 1600 views ,great talent
I really appreciate it...thx!
Hello Russ-Absolutely perfect!! Haven't heard that song in years, and you were spot on!! Good job Sir!!!!👏👍✔️✔️
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
WOW WOW WOWWWWWW!!! This is phenomenal!!!!!! You play all those instruments???? And that beautiful voice covering DCs own???? Oh my God! I’m speechless! I literally got goosebumps! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate the kind comments!
@@russwilloughby501 you’re so welcome 😊
David Cassidy was a huge talent and your singing and playing here does the song justice, very nice. Thank you for sharing your music and your phenomenal talent as well!
Thank you very much!
This is a tough one, because you have Shirley Jones singing backup, very hard to make sound as good as her...You inspired me, I think I will follow in your footsteps and make my own videos playing everything...thanks for the inspiration Russ...
You bet. The greatest compliment is when someone says they've been inspired...thanks for that, and good luck with your videos.
@@russwilloughby501 I really dig you channel. We both like older hits and such. My guitarist in my band, Ray really liked Make it With You by Bread.
Well done as usual sir Russ.
Cheers 🇧🇷
Thank you so much; I appreciate it!
Very well done!
Thank you very much!
Again the best version I've heard of this song, feels stronger as I hoped it would, thank you!!
And a tiny request, since it's from Partridge Family, would you consider putting "One night stand" or "I'll meet you halfway" to the waiting list?
Thanks, Jason....those are both great tunes. Many thanks...you never know!
Nice job! Am quite impressed. Kinda weird though. Not seeing Danny. Plucking the bass😀
He was there.....he's just so short you can't see him. Thanks so much!
@@russwilloughby501 being a bass player, I always laughed. The music would have a complicated bass run, and Danny’d be plucking one string!! 😄
Killer rendition Russ!!!
Many thanks, Christopher!
Great job! Writing and performing a good, memorable pop song is much harder than people realize. Even the TV show themes by Johnny Williams or Hoyt Curtin are much more complicated and challenging than people realize.
To achieve the true Partridge Family sound of David Cassidy you need to record the vocals at a slower speed. The recording sessions adjusted his pitch up from his natural range.
Your hitting it perfectly. "Went-To-Sleep_with_you on my_mind".... Great beat with those words and the drum pounding
Thanks so much, John!
@@russwilloughby501 Your welcome
Great job Russ! I never heard this Partridge Family track, but it does have a little drive to it, doesn't it? While I cringe to admit it, some of those songs were toe-tappers, and kept the inane plots of the show moving.
I had a love-hate relationship with them. Susan Dey was cute, even with the braces, but I loathed the rest of them, especially David Cassidy.
Wait. Are you trying to say Susan Dey and Danny Bonaduce didn't play on this (note sarcasm)?
I've been learning some of the iconic riffs of The Wrecking Crew's Louis Shelton lately. He mentioned how much he was making back then per session, and how busy he was cranking out stuff. He can't even remember most of the tracks he played on. And they didn't even get credits! Back in those days, producers had their arms all around the profits.
Thanks, Stan! I admit...I watched a lot of the episodes; mostly because I loved any show where people were "playing" instruments. As a kid of 5 or 6 it never dawned on me that they weren't playing. As for Louis Shelton, man, what a monster. His solo in Lionel Richie's "Hello" is absolutely beyond amazing.
The only song I heard Russ do that I don't recall from the goold ole days, but it's a good one.
Thank so much! Not everyone would recognize a Partridge Family tune, so I get it!
I’ve watched quite a few of your videos now and loved them all! These are songs I haven’t heard or thought about in about 40 years, but I’m really enjoying them. Subscribed.
thanks so much, and thanks for the sub!
Wow- you've covered two of my top 5 favorite '70s songs!
I never watched the Partridge Family or heard this song until now. As usual Russ you did a great job!
Thanks much, Jim; I appreciate it!
I'm an old rocker now but I've liked this song since I was a kid.
Yeah, it's a cool tune, for sure!
Fantastic, dare I say BETTER than the Partridge Family version? Icing on the cake would be to have one of your guitar personas wear a red Danny Partridge wig. Thanks once again for the great ear candy!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
amazing you have so much talent
Thank you so much 😀
So fun! Good work!
Thanks so much!
I love it. Thanks for doing this. Great job, great song
Thank you too!
Oh Keith Partridge! I remember!
Thanks for listening!
a lot of the partridge songs are so interesting in the chords they chose (well the artist who wrote them anyways.) nice job on the harmonies, how the heck did you hit those high notes??? jeezus.
Had my tight pants on....many thanks!
Great cover!
Thank you!
Not bad for a middle aged man. In fact relly not bad...in fact, pretty doggone good!! :-)
Thanks! Some of us can still lay it down!
❤ great Cover Russ! No Need for bands with you around 😂 I like your comments regarding the record industry at the time of this hit! And the reference to the Wrecking Crew, that included the late great Glenn Campbell and a host of other professionals that played most of the instruments on thousands of pop records in the USA in the 60s! Studio time was too important and expensive to let bands play their own stuff! Called the wrecking crew because the record industry thought it would Wreck the industry if the public ever found out!!
Thanks so much, Mike. Yeah, record companies wanted bands out on the road as much as possible. Sometimes they just stopped by the studio to record vocal tracks.
Great! The only thing missing was Susan Dey :-)
She was unavailable....but Danny Bonaduce was there (he's just too short see him). Thanks much!
@@russwilloughby501 You're just amazing, Russ. I doubt anyone could nail it any better than you have. Sights and sounds together.
Another excellent video Russ, you are amazing my friend!
Thanks much...so glad you enjoyed it! As always, it's appreciated.
That was GREAT! It's not every day that you hear the Partidge Family covered. Your cover sounds as good as the original. And I really like that seafoam green guitar.
As always, many thanks, Mark! I actually built the green guitar.....fun stuff!
Great job with a great song!
damn, Excellent work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now you gotta do Point me in the direction of Albuquerque.
That's a great tune, thanks!
The Partridge Family's musical material has always been very good penned by Tony Romeo, Wes Farrell, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Neil Sedaka, Terry Cashman and Tommy West, among other big names.
I agree! Thanks for listening in!
Let’s not forget David Cassidy himself!
excelente😀
Thanks!
wonderful cover!💖
Glad you like it! Thanks!
