As an audio engineer for over 15 years i have learned that mixing is far more important than mic. I can mix a vocal that was ran through a at2020 and make it sound radio ready. Other can have a c800 and the mix sound like crap. I chased mics when i didnt know how to mix properly. Just some knowledge for beginners. This mic is great btw lol
you can make and mix a song where the at2020 sounds great, but you cannot make an at2020 sound like a c800g. good gear does not need much mixing, it already sounds good and takes eq much better. cheap gear sounds really bad when you push the eq or comp.
I’ve always felt like having a good mic was for more than just the “quality”. Of course the mixing is most important but the better the microphone, the better the handling, the better the features, the better the performance overall. But you can still record a really good song from cheap equipment if you mix properly.
It all depends on how the artist is recording and projecting their voice. An artist who sings probably isn’t gonna need the most expensive mic on the market because their voice is going to already sound good. However an artist who does mumble rap or Travis Scott type vocals is not gonna get good results on a cheap mic.
I am loving that sound. I am looking for a replacement for my TZ Audio Stellar X2 Vintage. I'll mostly use it for Livestreams. I wonder if this is my go to
I've had the TLM 103 for about 2,5 years before getting the Sony C-80, and the Sony mic absolutely blew my TLM103 out of the water. Couldn't believe it was that much better at like...half the price? Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Thank you! I really appreciate it Daniel! I'm actually recording the comparison video this week. I can tell you right now tho, the Sony C-80 sounds fuller and rounder. Be on the lookout for the video next week sometime
Hey Archie! Could you do a video on what this microphone is capable of by showing some mixed vocals to a production in the mix? It sounds great on it’s own, but how does it translate in a full production? I just purchased it and it should be arriving this week, excited to try it out! Currently using the Stam Audio SA-87 as my daily which is a beautiful sounding microphone, but I’m looking to get something that I can whip out if I need those modern vocals! I’m hoping the C80 will do
I currently use the Stam Audio SA-87 which is an all around amazing microphone. I decided to pick up the C-80 to give it a try, and for my voice, it just didn't ''work'' as I've gotten so used to mixing my own projects and recordings from the 87. The C-80 is definitely a good microphone, but I decided to return it as I preferred my other microphones. It's a really forward and bright microphone although it still has some body to it, just not my cup of tea. I've tried the SA-800-G which REALLY comes close and gives you that Sony C-800G sound. I just found that using the C80 on my voice came with a very processed sound which can both be a good and a bad thing depending on what your workflow is and what type of sound you're going for. I like to have a lot of control over my recordings, where as in my experience, the C80 will already give you that processed, upfront in your face type of sound straight out of the box, and mixing some takes on this microphone just made me realise that the more you manipulate it in the mixing process, it will introduce artifacts. If you're the type of person who likes to add that sheen and shine, brightness and harmonic distortion in the box, this microphone might not be the right choice for you. If you wanna save a lot of time in the mixing-stage and really like the character of this microphone, it could definitely be a considerable option for the price! Personally I just prefer the sound that I get when processing my vocals and achieving the sound that I like through plugins etc. My 1 reason for returning it is not that it's not a great microphone, but I just felt like it didn't take much for it to become too ''digital'' to my ears. As you can hear in Archie's video, the microphone already has a very polished and bright sound, and it really limited me on what I could do with my recorded signal - but by all means, I could instantly tell why this microphone is a great choice for the price as soon as I started recording on it, I just preferred my current chain instead and I couldn't really justify having it laying around as I knew I was pretty much always gonna grab the 87 after 2 weeks of testing out the C80. @@hotboyroy
It's also important to take into consideration that I do have a slightly bright voice when singing and I do sing very loud compared to most people - the two microphones that I was comparing is very different price ranges as well (which in the end, doesn't really mean anything, the sound does!) I just checked out your video from your channel, and I really do think that this microphone would suit your voice - just make sure you hit this bad boy with a nice DeEsser, especially for rap vocals, as I said, it can very easily get super bright and ''digital'' @@hotboyroy
