- Let’s see how a local fisherman is net fishing under the ice! We were on Pärnu Bay that is the most important coastal fishing area in Estonia and I was lucky to see how a professional fisherman is doing it's magic on (or should I day under?) this frozen world.

I'd love to try it but I live in Queensland Australia and I'm probably never going to see snow.
But I do love watching your RUclips videos because I get to see the rest of the world.

I'm from Canada and we have lot's of ice fishing - mostly on the lakes from what I have seen, but maybe some in the ocean. Up north the polar bears ice fish - haha! They stand by the holes for seals and when a seal comes up for air - the polar bear has lunch.
In some places, they have little houses that they pull onto the ice and you have a bench, stove, heater. So you can have a nice cup of coffee or tea while you are fishing! :)
I grew up fishing on river's , canals and lake's going with dad , then later I used to go with friends sea fishing around the UK . Most of the time it was catch and release , or fishing contests . But as for ice fishing never .
I don't like fishing that much. They have ice fishing where I live and they use spears on a lake to catch sturgeon.
Your skill is being able to show the rest of the world how wonderful Estonia and its people are.

Being 1/2 Estonian myself, but sadly a 3'rd generation and non-speaking North American... I really enjoy watching your videos and learning more about the landscape over there. Hearing the language spoken brings back a warm reminder of my childhood. And your postings of your grandmother's garden and mushroom hunting very much coincides with the stories my own grandmother used to tell. This particular video also shows a today's world look at, again, fishing stories i heard as a child which i never quite understood how they stretched the net out over such long distances under ice, until seeing it now here. Very tricky and time-consuming task to prepare, and repair those nets! Keep up the good work, I enjoy your "ambassador of Estonia" nature hiking videos greatly. Cheers

I loved this video! I often go out along the coast with my dogs. We sometimes see the fisherman out there on the ice. It's beautiful to watch. The traditions, tools, and a lifetime of stories.

It's sad how so much is being lost in todays new "generation", I dont have a son and my daughter is not so interested but I have loads of skills and info to share but its all being lost when Im gone except what my videos shared with those who want them. cheers and thanks, this was a great video

Hiker..... I may be repeating myself by now, but I think your photography skills are outstanding. I avoided watching this video as I thought it would be boring. But once I watched It, I'd love to know more about your adventure and the skills involved in that type of ice fishing. Very nicely done. You tell an interesting story and take lovely videos. I live in an area where there are a lot of commercial fishermen. They bring us the crab, shrimp, and a lot of great sea food. I like fishing, but not a commercial fisherman, just like to enjoy fishing on my own. No skills here either. But that don't stop me. Don't look like it stops you either. But you are an artist, No skills.. lol. Another fun video.... Thank you. God Bless.
Maybe an artist can appreciate the beauty of fish. I love looking at fish, catching them, and yes, eating them.
This is so interesting! Here in upstate New York, USA we are inland and at the beginning of the Adirondack Mountains and Park. We have many rivers, lakes and ponds, many drain into larger rivers like the Hudson River. We have 2 spring fed fresh water ponds here on our farm and they are full of fish. Most of the folks up here who fish in summer also ice fish but only as a hobby. There are a few professional fishermen on the larger lakes like Lake George and they take in huge trout. Many of them also bring out little fishing shacks and stoves so they can stay warm while waiting for hits on their lines. Pretty soon the fish will start running on the Hudson to go upstream and the professional fishermen are there. It is amazing to see the shad runs, the fish are leaping out of the water and the surface of the water looks alive with so many fish. I taught all my 4 kids to fish on the Erie Canal and when the boys got older they liked to go to the canal early in the morning to spend time with the old fishermen who were there just as the sun came up. The old men caught dozens of small fish, crappies, at a time on each line and had full buckets in mid morning. My daughter and I did not care for ice fishing but we liked fresh water fishing in the early evening just before sunset and when we would walk home the woods were glowing with thousands of fireflies. It was magical. Now I like to sit and watch everyone else fish, especially the young kids and grandchildren. Everyone loves fishing our ponds, then having a bonfire at sundown where we sit and roast marshmallows.

nice video i have set nets on freshwater lakes in central Canada for 44 years we also catch walleye or pickerel as your dad does, We set nets 8 to 11 miles from shore when the ice gets 15 to 35 inches thick and most days we come home with 700 to 1200 pounds The fishing is a dying art here also but the fish are plentiful Don
Interesting piece of traditional craftsmanship!
And so much more sustainable than the industrial fishing that is done on the trailers out on the open sea.

Well done Maiu! Thank you for the insight into net ice fishing, I had no idea it was possible. Here in the States we only hear about "hole" fishing. I grew up in a fishing town, Lots of Italian immigrants with there small boats going day after day out after salmon, anchovies, rock cod in the 50's and 60's. Then commercial fishing got too big and the sea fished out. Now most of the commercial fishing is gone as are the canneries. Thanks again for the beautiful scenery and story!

I used to be a fisherman, so I understand the problems fisherman face with income, the laws and sustainability. 07:35, ha, we call them needles as well :-) if I'm not mistaken, they are Seahorses. 08:45, I still read nature when I'm going out and it never fails me. Hello my hiking friend on the ice, my family had a small vacation house close to a fishing village and I did spend a lot of time there when I was a kid, the commercial fishermen used that method with net and also traps as long as the season allowed it, we used to do ice fishing with an ice drill and a short jigging rod, in Sweden we call it pimpel fiske. Haven't done ice fishing since the early 2008 when I introduced it to a family from Thailand and that was a funny adventure. Walking on frozen water was more interesting than fishing, it ended up with me drilling holes and doing the fishing by myself.
wow..this is enlightening and educational for me . Never expect you to post this.First of all I am an avid Angler (Rods and Reels though).Fishing in the Tropics is totally different .This is so different of course. But knowing how small scale commercial ice fishing is done is eye opening. Also the controls on net sieve size and fish size.

The fishermen have to mark their nets with their permit numbers in the flags so everybody always knows who's nets are under the ice. Haven't heard that someone's fish or nets have been stolen... Maybe it happens but the community is quite small and everybody knows everybody.

Isn't Pärnu Bay sea water? I am surprised that it freezes at that latitude. Does the Pärnu River have such a heavy flow that the salinity is lowered? Or does the fresh water layer over the sea water and freeze?
Yes, Pärnu bay is part of the Baltic Sea but it is so closed off from the ocean that the salt levels are very low. All the coastal areas around the Baltic Sea are freezing over in winter.

that was interesting... I grew up on the shore of Lake Erie (one of the U.S. Great Lakes sort of an inland sea of fresh water). people then would buy and old car that was on its last legs, drive it out onto the frozen lake drill holes in the ice and drop in pop up lines. and fish. in the spring the ice would break up and if they were not careful they would be caught on an ice flow , so that the coast guard would have to pick them up , the car got a deep 6 and became fish habitat

That was so very interesting! I would have to go to Alaska to fish in that way. On the west coast of the "lower 48" US states, the bays don't freeze over in winter, but we have fresh water lakes that do, and many people enjoy "ice fishing" on those lakes. Instead of a chainsaw, they use an ice auger to bore a round hole in the ice, then lower their baited hooks and lines into the water through the hole. Often they will put up a shelter on the ice, something like a tent with no floor, and put folding chairs and a propane-fueled heater inside. The nearest lake that always freezes over and is quite popular with ice fishermen is 100 miles north of where I live. The road that goes there is treacherous in winter and spring due to snow and avalanches, and I do not have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, so I can only go fish in that lake from a boat in summer. How do your hiking shoes work for walking on ice? Stay safe out there. Cheers.

i have never taken an interest in fishing or netting, its a marmite thing you either like it or dont,however this was a great video i had seen eskimo catch fish but never long netting in this way,it must take incredible patience and endurance in bad weather. its sad that such tight laws are put on these types of fishermen its not like they catch the numbers a trawler does,its also sad its a dieing craft as with many of the old crafts..thankyou and your stepfather for this video ....
