  • Thrissur will soon get the State’s first skywalk bridge, connecting four main centres of the city.
The City Corporation has prepared plan for a circular walk bridge around Shakthan Nagar. The work will be implemented under the Union Government’s Amrutham project, with the support of the State and Corporation.
The Union government will bear 50% of the total cost, while the State will provide 30% of the expense and the Corporation, the remaining 20%.
The skywalk bridge will connect four centres around Sakthan Nagar - Ekkanda Warrier Road, M.O. Road, Sakthan Nagar and Kokkale . It will have a perimeter of 279 metres and four entries and four exits. The walkway will be constructed in steel structure.
The Corporation is getting ready to obtain technical permission before beginning tender procedures.
The Union government has allotted ₹270 cr for the Thrissur Corporation under the Amrutham Project. The bridge will be constructed using the funds allotted for urban road development under the project. The Centre will allot 20% of the funds in the initial stage.
In addition to the skywalk bridge, a foot overbridge will come at North Bus stand. Modernisation of existing footpaths, new footpath on the sides of State highways at Patturiakkal and a subway at M.O. Road connecting to Nayarangadi are the other projects under the Amrutham project.
A skyway, skybridge, or skywalk is an elevated type of pedway connecting two or more buildings in an urban area, or connecting elevated points within mountainous recreational zones. Urban skyways very often take the form of enclosed or covered footbridges that protect pedestrians from the weather. Open-top modern skyways in mountains now often have glass bottoms. Sometimes enclosed urban skywalks are made almost totally from glass, including ceilings, walls and floors. Also, some urban skyways function strictly as linear parks designed for walking.
