Justice Daniel Goundar - Role of judiciary to ensure court hears best evidence

From 4-6 March 2024 the PILON Sexual and Gender Based Violence Working Group held an Implementation Workshop in Nadi, Fiji, for the Regional Guidelines for Prosecutors and Witness Support Officers to support Vulnerable Witnesses through the Prosecution of Sexual and Gender Based Violence Offences.
Justice Daniel Goundar was appointed as a Judge in the High Court of Fiji in 2007, and has served as a Commissioner of the Independent Legal Services Commission from 2009 to date.
During his presentation, Justice Daniel Goundar reflects on the importance of implementing special measures for cases of SGBV.
Justice Daniel Goundar also shares his views on what needs to be done to address the paradigm shift in judicial attitudes toward SGBV cases, and the judiciary’s perspective of the ‘No-Drop’ policy.
