    Welcome back to another episode of 'Alley Cat Makes Stuff' on Random Alley Cat. Today, we're diving into the world of DIY and 3D printing, crafting a custom enclosure for the Lilygo T-Beam SUPREME - a powerful yet compact LoRa device running Meshtastic firmware.
    I've noticed that while there are a few cases out there, they come with a few complications - tricky printing, a myriad of parts, complex assembly, and limited practicality. So, I decided to take matters into my own paws and design a case that defies these norms.
    What sets our creation apart? Simplicity and utility. This custom case requires only two screws and nuts to secure it, ensuring a sturdy yet hassle-free assembly. Plus, it's designed with versatility in mind - featuring slots to easily strap onto backpacks or any gear of your choice. And for those who love a good stand, there's an option to incorporate a ¼-20 thread adapter, perfect for mounting.
    In true Random Alley Cat spirit, this isn't just about making a case; it's about tailoring solutions to fit our adventurous needs. While I'm quite pleased with this design, I'm all ears (and whiskers) for your ideas and suggestions. After all, the beauty of DIY is in the collaboration and continuous improvement.
    Join me in this step-by-step journey as we design, print, and assemble this unique case. From the initial sketches to the final assembly, this video showcases the key steps of bringing our design to life. Whether you're a 3D printing aficionado or just starting out in the realm of customized tech gear, this video offers a glimpse into the process, peppered with Alley Cat's distinct insights and tricks of the trade.
    Random Alley Cat is more than a channel for project sharing; it's a beacon of inspiration, urging you to awaken your creative genius and craft something that echoes with your inner explorer. So gather your gear, rev up those 3D printers, and let's embark on a thrilling journey of creation together!

I’m planning to make an update video soon with all the changes I made to the Lilygo cases, and then I have a series of Heltec cases I’m about to put out, as well as some RAK stuff. It’s awesome that so many people are enjoying them!

    Very impressed with the design, well done! Looks really solid, and for sure does not sacrifice the style either. 😎 I also spend a lot of time making some complex parts sometimes and even 3D modeling entire projects to find ideas and have a better vision of the final thing beforehands. Great printer too, I got a Prusa MK2.5 that has helped me with so many things for the past 7 years already!
    I was just looking into that whole Meshtastic thing, and I was thinking of getting a device to play around with a bit and satisfy the curiosity. I might very well go for this one to start with...

    • @randomalleycat
      @randomalleycat  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks a lot for the feedback! I started with a Mk2 and got the Mk3 when it came out. The magnetic bed was definitely a good upgrade! I definitely think the T-Beam Supreme is a good place to start. It's not necessarily the best Meshtastic device, but it's really easy to get setup and running. You might want to get two and give one to a nearby friend!

    • @Slay3rOne
      @Slay3rOne 3 месяца назад +1

      @@randomalleycat Oh I started with the MK2 as well! But I went for the 2.5 upgrade kit that adds the magnetic bed. Best upgrade ever for that printer, it made it so much better to use! Plus it auto calibrates when you change filament, that was also a huge plus. I didn't get the MK3, but now I see the newer models, maybe by the end of this year I'll finally get a MK4 or if I'm crazy enough the XL (the added volume can help for some stuff!).
      Yes I was thinking about getting two, but maybe not the same model, so I can compare a bit. In fact I'm not sure there is any/not much Meshtastic activity over here (I'm from Reunion Island). But then there is also the whole MQTT stuff, so I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun playing around with that. That said, not all models are easy to buy here either, so there is that 😅 I'm trying to decide what model to get now!

    • @randomalleycat
      @randomalleycat  3 месяца назад +1

    • @Slay3rOne
      @Slay3rOne 3 месяца назад +1

      @@randomalleycat Always a challenge, but there is always some solution. For sure! I definitely will try MQTT, otherwise it might be pretty limited here I suspect.

    • @Slay3rOne
      @Slay3rOne 3 месяца назад +1

      -I might get a regular T-Beam V1.2 instead of the Supreme for now, it's much easier to purchase for me at this time.- _(I changed my mind)_ Quick question if you don't mind. You have both right? The Supreme is the more recent design, a little more modular, USB-C instead of micro, the antenna mounted differently and a choice for a better GPS. But apart from that is one better than the other? It looks to me like both are pretty similar otherwise.

    Mines printing in black PETG now, will a 21700 fit in the back? If not, that might be a nice mod since you can swap out the holder for a 21700 holder pretty easily and gain a good chunk of power which these could use...

    • @randomalleycat
      @randomalleycat  7 дней назад

      I thought about it and I probably will later, but I wanted this case to be good for beginners, and not a lot of them are going to be disordering the 18650 holder. I do have a RAK case coming soon that has the same design but a little shorter, and it uses a 21700. That’s a better choice also because the RAK uses a lot less power.

      @@mavikiraz2676 I had always wanted to learn CAD, but every time I tried, I just felt overwhelmed and had no idea where to start or what to do. Then one day I thought of something I really wanted, but it didn't exist.
      In a way it felt like what people say about sculptors, that they just remove everything that isn't what they want. Like they have the thing in their mind and then they can actually make it.
      When that happened, I just needed to figure out what steps I needed to take in CAD for the thing I thought if to appear, but it was so much easier when I knew my destination before I started.
      Sorry I'm rambling, not sure if this is helpful at all, but if you let me know where you're stuck maybe I could help.

    • @mavikiraz2676

      @randomalleycat Yes, I understand what you mean.
      Imagination is an essential part of design. A designer needs to make an object not only functional but also aesthetically appealing.
      Let's take the example of a pencil case. A box is a functional way to hold pencils, but it's also not very interesting. A designer can use their imagination to make a pencil case more interesting and appealing. For example, the pencil case could be a different shape or material, or it could have an interesting pattern or motif.
      I really like the case you designed for the electronic device. It's really stylish. The design of this case is a product of imagination and creativity. It has both a highly functional and a highly professional aesthetic. I haven't yet reached this aesthetic and design skill. I think I need to work harder.
